cf la) £ iie Published by the Student Body 1956 INGLEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Inglewood, California We dedicate the Green and White, The forty-eight it is. To a woman who is so well-liked For her terrific faith in kids. Miss Joan Schutz, we are speaking of, And we know you will agree. Deserves this honor above all else For her athletic ability. Her professional services in our school Are limited to a degree: For G.A.A. and other groups Are her specialty. Her humor and agility. Her trust and friendship true. Are other factors in her life Which we remember, too. With all these points combined together We close this resume; And hope for her, unending success Through every hour of every day. She has helped the students throughout these years In everything they do; But gym and problems are her firsts. For she knows just what to do. 2 Golden days of '56 leave memories so bright They'll linger on for years to come. With an everlasting light They'll silhouette the happy days That now seem so few Of football games and school events Of queens and dances, too. They'll silhouette the many friends We've made and fondly cherish For in the pages of this book Their names will never perish. f English and World Culture CLASSES IN ACTION CLASSES IN ACTION A C T V T FEATURES S MARLO RYAN MARLEA MINTON Rifle Queen SANDY MYREN Swimming Queen MARILYN FREEMAN Tennis Queen II WAYNE ATKINS Runner-Up Friendliest Most Popular JUDY DEMING Most Popular Most Courteous Friendliest MARIO RYAN Runner-Up Most Popular PAUL PEDIGO Most Popular Friendliest Runner-Up Most Courteous 12 SHARON ZURCHER Runner-Up Friendliest LUIGI CEDOLIN Most Courteous MARILYN FREEMAN Runner-Up Most Courteous JIM SCHILLING Wittiest CAROLYN DILKS Runner-Up Wittiest NOT PICTURED MARY VICKERS, Wittiest Girl JOHN CARBRAY, Runner-Up Wittiest Boy 13 JACKIE DUREE GRID PRINCESSES JUDY DEMING Senior Princess ACADEMIC LEADERS Frances Huneke, Lois Wendland, Sharon Zurcher Judith Borling 16 SERVICE POINT LEADERS Seated: Rosalie Bean, Fran Huneke. Students that are enrolled in this group receive a report card grade for their efforts as this is a regular class. Judy Poe, Jack Shaffer and Bob Degen- felder are the student leaders of this activity. Under the direction of Mr. Holace Metcalf, the band plays at our football games, home league basketball games, Inglewood Relays, various as- semblies, rallies, Baccalaureate Services, Graduation and at the Music Festival. Representing us at the Music Festival, Senior Band marched away with First Division as they have two-thirds of the times that they have played in it. Playing a drum solo at the Festival and taking First Division was Judy Poe. Also taking First was Judy Skillman playing a flute solo, Patricia Ander- son, Priscilla Anderson, and Jack Shaffer performing a trumpet trio. During the twenty-five years that Mr. Metcalf has directed the band he has watched it grow from around twenty students to a mighty sixty-five. Cm Front row: AA. Morse, C. Hawkins, J. Skillman, J. ORCHESTRA Our Senior Orchestra plays some twenty engagements a year. They perform at school events, for civic groups, and at the Califor- nia State Fair. The main objective of Orchestra is to play a great deal of fine music and to per- form several compositions to the best of its ability. During the six years that Mr. Weatherly has directed Senior Orchestra, the organi- zation has taken the State Fair Award for the last five years in succession for the best performing orchestra. Nadine Critchfield performs her duties as manager of this music-minded group which six years ago numbered seventeen students and has grown to its present sixty-five. Senior Orchestra boasts of its own exten- sive library and of an Honor System. The Honor System gives the students a chance to win a gold or silver medal for perform- ance. Members that have one hundred per cent attendance in addition to this are a- warded a certificate of merit. The Spring Concerto Program is the fea- ture performance of each year. In Concerto advanced members appear as soloists. This year will be their sixth annual program. A CAPPELLA Numbering approximately seventy-five students Inglewood High's A Cappella Choir is under the direction of Mr. Crist Mikkelsen. This group of singers perform at our school assemblies, in junior high schools such as Crozier and Larch, elementary schools, in our Christmas program. Piano Concert and other various con- certs. Everyone is eligible to become a member of this special activity if he has a good singing voice. Students with experience in church choir or in a beginning choir are preferred over students who have had no training. A Cappella is a regular class and students are graded as in their other subjects. 36 Front row: Mr. Mikkelsen, C. Corey, J. Fullbright, C. Chapman, B. Christie, I. Erens, S. Harman, K. Heyer, G. Commissioner of Student Council, the executive branch of our Student Government, deals with Student Activities most of the problems that concern our school and student body. Council is com- posed of the student body, league, and class officers, as well as the presidents of the various service organizations around school. The main problems concerning the school are taken care of by the entire Council itself, but the subsidiary problems, such as campus beautification, cafeteria, assemblies, school spirit, service points, and publicity are mostly handled by sub- committees within the Council. These committees are appointed by the Student Body President, the chairman of the Student Council. The problems concerning the student body as a whole, are taken care of by the Council in their daily meetings, for which they get regular school credits. Policies are also established and passed here and go into effect with the approval of the House of Representa- tives. This year's Councils have done much to keep up the pride and spirit of Inglewood High School by publicizing a weekly event, our Code of Ethics, along with the past and present traditions of our school. With the help of House, Council has also done much in making this year's Pep Week a success, along with obtaining another foreign student for next year. Coach FOOTBALL SUMMARY By STEVE TEN EYCK Inglewood's football dreams came true during the 1955 season, when the Sentinels emerged as co-champions of the Bay League. Inglewood started the season by playing their first game at Paramount, but they proved to be poor hosts and dropped the Green and White, 14-0. The Sentinels did somewhat better when they met Loyola. This time the game was played at the home field and Inglewood left the field with a 13-13 tie. In the third practice tilt Inglewood once more played host and fell prey to the Santa Monica Vikings. For the ninth consecutive year Samo High downed Inglewood, this time by a score of 40-0. It was the worst beating Inglewood was to take during the '55 season. John Burroughs hosted the Sentinels for their last practice tilt. It was in this game that the Sents dropped their unsuccessful double wing offense and switched to the T formation. Inglewood scored first against Burroughs and with four minutes left in the game the Sents were ahead 14-13. Inglewood fumbled on their own seven and Burroughs taking possession went over to win the game 20-14. With the first League tilt Inglewood changed its mind about football and decided to play the game for keeps. They defeated Torrance on the home field by a score of 13-7. The first half was scoreless but Inglewood scored early in the third quarter and again in the fourth quarter. Torrance's tally came in the closing minutes of the game. The home team's only league tie came when they met last year's CIF champs, the Centennial Apaches. Although Centennial was picked to win by more than 30 points, Inglewood was the first to score and pulled out ahead 6-0. Centennial caught up but failed to pass the Sentinels and the game ended in a 6-6 tie. In the third league game Inglewood traveled to the Redondo field and scalped the Redondo Seahawks 27-13. The following week Inglewood once more traveled to the Redondo fielc but this time to meet Mira Costa. The Sentinels downed Micohi 27-13. By a coincidence, Inglewood played both teams at the Redondo field and beal both teams by the same score, 27-13. Inglewood played its last league game against their old rivals, Leuzinger, and it was a fitting end to a near-perfect season. Leuzinger was the first to score and went ahead by six points early in the first quarter; but the Sentinels had just begun. Inglewood also scored in the first quarter, again in the second and fourth quarters to win by 20-6. Under Head Coach Paul Manahan, the Sentinels- moulded into a cham- pionship team that probably was the strongest in the Bay League. Unfortun- ately Inglewood did not get to participate in the CIF playoffs as Centennial, the 1954 CIF champions, was chosen to compete. Bruce Carmichael was the top scorer for the season, coming out on top with 34 points, Wayne Atkins was next with 23, Paul Pedigo came in a close third with 20 points. Other points scored were Keith Jacobs, 13, Bob Messer 13, Bill Miller 6, and Dick Burton 6. Tremendous line play by Metcalf, Clark, Fillis, Slaven, Newman, with good spirit and teamwork by the entire squad made it a season to long remember. VARSITY BASKETBALL SUMMARY After winning the Bay League Championship last year the Sentinels had to be content with sixth place in the League during this season. They were topped by Redondo, Santa Monica, Mira Costa, Centennial, and Torrance. Coach Smith had three returning lettermen, Don Ray, Tom Hoff, and Ron Alexander. Last year's J.V. team furnished four players, Jim McFerson, Jack Ames, Bill Dowle, Jim McBee, the B team supplied Jim Schilling, Marvin Trujillo, and the C's contributed Gary Cunningham, and a transfer from Sherman, Texas, Keith Jacobs, made up the squad. Eligibility problems made it hard for this year's team because five players were ineligible for almost all the practice games and four of the league games. Thus it caused Coach Smith to juggle his line-up for many games which probably handicapped the team. In their first practice game the Sentinels edged out a close win 43-42 over the alumni but in the nine practice tilts Inglewood topped only Santa Paula and Santa Barbara losing to Oxnard, Fillmore, Mt. Whitney, Lynwood, Loyola, Compton and Excelsior. A winning combination wasn't found by the beginning of the season, and the Sents were dumped 40-33 by Leuzinger and 53-34 by Mira Costa. In their third League encounter, the Sentinels trekked down to Torrance where they gave one of their best performances of the year, winning 54-50 in an exciting overtime period. In their first home league game the powerful Centennial Apaches downed the Sentinels 61-41. More of the same was in order as the Santa Monica Vikings beat Inglewood 79-69 and the Redondo Seahawks won by a score of 62-32. The second round of play saw the Sentinels get even with Leuzinger by defeating the Olympians 43-30. Their winning ways were very short lived, however, as they dropped their five remaining games. The Sentinels contin- ued to get stronger as the season progressed but they still couldn't match the scoring punch of their opponents and dropped games to Mira Costa 58-64, Tor- rance 57-65, Centennial 47-62, Santa Monica 50-59, and Redondo 28-53. In the second annual Inglewood Invitational Basketball Tournament, Inglewood placed fourth with Montebello taking first place. The Sentinels defeated the last year's champs, Huntington Beach. Russel Spencer, returnee from last year's C.I.F. relay tearr can be expected to win the Bay League in his events this year. Bob Forbes holds the school record for the B Individual Medley and is an outstanding backstroker. VARSITY TRACK Under the training of Coaches Thomas Gerhart and William Pearson and with Jack Metcalf, Bob Woods and Al Herzog as returning lettermen, Inglewood High School is looking forward to a successful season. Because of the deadline for the Green and White it is impossible to report in the annual the complete track season, and it is with this in mind that a short resume is written on the previous season. During last season Sentinel Trackmen broke three records. Jerry Horn pole vaulted to set a Southern California CIF record of 13'8 15 16 . Setting a new record in the shot put Jack Metcalf threw a mighty 55'4! 2 . In the Inglewood Relay Carnival the four-man team consisting of Veneman, Hayward, Solaas and Herzog set a new time of 8 minutes and 16 seconds. This year Metcalf has already broken his record of last year by throwing the shot put a tremendous 56'8! 2 . Inglewood Tracksters have wins over Mira Costa and Morningside High with a loss to Glendale. This year the B team set a new record at the Mira Costa Relay Carnival in the four-man mile of 46 seconds. Inglewood High School has the honor of being host to the CIF Southern Section Finals here this year. VARSITY TRACK B TRACK Front row; T. Daggett, J. Mendonsa, A. Benson, R. Yost, E. Olsen, J. This year is no exception, with the Varsity boasting 7 returning lettermen, a handful of J.V.'s up this year, and few promising freshmen. At the head of the hitting parade will be last year's most valuable player, Jim Macha; speedy centerfielder, Larry Olexiewicz; big first baseman, John Horn; freshman. Bob Thompson, and top-flight catcher John Carbray. The Sents' infield will be one of the best with John Horn and Roger DesRosiers, senior letterman and strongest defensively at the hot corner. Up the middle it will be a pair of sophs, Larry Courtney and Art Adams, who together make the best double play combination in this area. When the clutch hit is needed, off the bench will come Dave Dennee to face any southpaw and Dale Wolf to face the right-hander. The pitching staff will boast three lettermen, a sophomore from J.V.'s and a freshman. One and two will be Jerry Montgomery, two-year letterman who moves that ball, Don Patera, who throws them left-handed, Marty Fortson and Dick Patera. A. ADAMS, shortstop 4 Junior Varsity Squad. GOLF Front row: G. Selzer, R. John, N. Dery, D. Paisley, K. Bagge. Second row: Mr. Worthington, G. Reynolds, J. Wedemeyer, J. Hoogerhyde. J. Wedemeyer, Coach Worthington, K. Mestinek. Out to better its 1955 record, a tie for third place in Bay League standings, the Sentinel golf team will field almost an entire team of freshmen and sophomores. Only Gene Selzer, junior, and Owen Sandusky, senior, are upper division lettermen back from last year's squad. Newcomers include John Wedemeyer, sophomore winner of the Kiwanis medal for underclassmen, Ken Mastinek, freshman, and Don Paisley, Garth Reynolds, all sophomores, with Jim Hoogerhyde and Jerry Howe, juniors. Inglewood will again host the C.I.F. member schools on April 9 in the 20th running of the Inglewood High School Invitational Golf Tournament, the oldest junior golf tournament in Southern California. 105 JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN 106 Front row: Mr. Schottland. SLATTERY, Scene Design and Lighting SENIOR CLASS HISTORY I can hardly wait until I'm a Senior, was a remark often heard by the graduating class of '56 when they were Freshmen. Chapter 1. As Freshmen The Beginning Now as they think back on their Freshman year they realize it wasn't so bad after all. Remember our first election in which Wayne Atkins was elected presi- dent; vice president was Rosalie Wallace and Pat O'Donnell, secretary-treasurer. Second semester presi- dent was Paul Pedigo, Sue Quan, vice president and Marilyn Freeman, secretary-treasurer. Our main activity for the year was a picnic at Centinela Park. What a baseball game . . . Chapter 2. Now We Are Sophomores Looking forward to Graduation. In our Sophomore year we elected as president, Fred Huffman; vice president, Betty Ricker; and Carol Garver, secretary-treasurer, who served first semester. Officers for second semester were: Harry Jackman, president; Judy Deming, vice president and Fran Chatfen, secretary-treasurer. Our first dance at IHS was a Ball and Chain dance held in the study hall. Everyone was invited to attend. Chapter 3. Upperclassmen—Juniors I'm at Inglewood Penthouse Paradise was the theme of the Junior prom held April 29. Donna Hammersmith Ryan was chosen queen and her court was: Sue Howard, Judy Deming, Rosalie Wallace Saxton, Phyllis Collins and Jackie DuRee. Special guests of honor were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Owens. John Carbray served as first semester president, Marilyn Freeman, vice president, and Donna Podvo- lecky, secretary. Second semester was LeRoy Miller, president, Margie Mills, vice president and Betty Ricker, secretary-treasurer. Chapter 4. As Seniors The End As the Senior Class of '56 we elected Jim Schilling, president; Sharon Zurcher, vice president and Lois Wendland, secretary-treasurer. Second semester, Dick Selander served as president, Janet Beam as vice presi- dent, and Sharon Stefflre as secretary-treasurer. The Seniors will have many Moments to Remem- ber from the Senior Prom held December ninth at the Ambassador Hotel, Gold Room. Music was pro- vided by the Elliot Brothers. To the tune of Moments to Remember The Junior Prom, a Penthouse Scene, The day we chose our campus queen We will have these moments to remember; Our Golden Anniversary, the GAA, the Varsity We will have these moments to remember. The day we ditched our classes we were heroes for a day The Clover Crawl, the Mardi Gras, Hernando's Hideaway; Our Golden Room of memories, the Brothers E their melodies. We will have these moments to remember. by BONNIE DANFORD The Curious Savage was the name of the Senior Play held in the George M. Green Auditorium, Jan- uary 21 and 22. Stars of the play were Ardy Graham and Dick Selander. Another of the many activities was Senior Ditch Day on April 18. Fun was had by all. June 10 marked the date of Baccalaureate. Then the last day, June 14, when the Seniors walked down Sentinel Field in their caps and gowns to receive their diplomas and that night the Graduation dance was held at the Palladium. Everyone danced all night and breakfast was served in the early hours of the morning. The 1956 Senior Class of Inglewood High School now leaves to go their separate ways but they will have moments to remember. 137 AUTOGRAPHS Front row. Second Semester: Kathy Cochrane. In our democratic way of life each citizen is urged to contribute his best efforts for the good of so- ciety, and in return all of us can live in a peaceful world of plenty. The program of studies at Inglewood High School provides oppor- tunities to develop skills essential to successful living, and our program of activities gives every student an opportunity to share rich experiences with the other students of Inglewood. With this background we can look forward to many years of success and happiness for each student who has shared in the life of Inglewood High School. 174 MRS.
