So it is with our senior advisors, but they hove done more than just their work. They are the close friend of everyone in the class. Even to those whom they do not know very well, their help, advice and counsel is available. Miss Marion Mooney, born in Illinois, went to high school and to college in California. She received her degree and teaching credential at U.C.L.A. She has been in Inglewood for two years and enjoys it very much. Among her subjects are typing and business math. She said that she has enjoyed working with all the students of the senior class and considers them quite exceptional. Page 8 C 2 i 0 7 Mr. Herman Siegel, who was born and raised in Connecti- cut, has been at Inglewood for five years. He received his B.A. degree at Santa Barbara and his Master's at Southern California. His main ambition is teaching here at Inglewood. The subjects he teaches are: general shop, crafts, and metal shop. When asked if he would make a statement on the senior class, he said very proudly that the Seniors are the finest group of individuals that one can hope to work with. It is indeed with great appreciation to Miss Mooney and Mr. Siegel, who are the loving friends and advisors of the class of 1952, that we dedicate The Green and White of 1952. So longas we are renenbercdL,welive Solon as oar [n fi itenee lfves we serve If is with our greatest sympathy and kindest thoughts that we look upon “Daddy Green, who passed away this year. Daddy Green, a Stanford graduate, did much for Inglewood High School; he was principal of our high school for many years and he was also superintendent of the district. He directed the first play ever presented at our high school. He did much in the interest of sports; he was one of the men who founded the C.I.F. and for many years was secretary. He was truly loved by all who knew him for he took a very personal interest in all his students; he even had records of two or three generations. The year before his death had been his most glorious one for he had his golden weddipg anniversary, celebrated his fiftieth year in the Masonic Lodge, and had the George M. Green auditorium dedicated to him. We can only hope that in the future we shall know other such persons as this great educator, great man, and great friend. This group is composed of the top twenty-five boys and twenty-five girls earning the most service points during the four years of high school. These students with their presidents, first semester, Don Taylor and Murt Munson, second semester, performed many duties for our school. They advised Homecoming Day, served as ushers for football games and P.T.A. When they were Juniors they served at the Senior Banquet for the class of '51. The Senior Honor Board is not aways working. They take time out for a little fun and excite- ment. On March 12, 1952, the Senior Honor Board held a dinner at The Chicken House at Knott's Berry Farm. This was just one of the many activities that was held during the year. Page 44 JrgxooXvOo Here we are at the end of four wonderful years; years filled with numerous memories. The fall of 1948 saw a new class of Freshmen enter Inglewood High School. For our first class president we elected Don Greco. Second semester president was Bill Roulette. Mr. Herman Siegel and Miss Lois Stegen were our advisors. Among the activities planned for that year were a skating party and a picnic in the spring at Centinela Park. As Sophomores we chose Mel Taylor as first semester president and Wayne Johnson as second semester. During the spring of that year we held a square dance in the study hall after school. We came back in the fall of 1950 to become Juniors. We had elected first semester Jack Peck to the office of president. When the second sem- ester rolled around we had elected Don Taylor. Together, with their cabinets they had planned various activities for our class. In the fall we held a skating party at the Westchester Skateland. On March 16, 1951, we held our Junior Prom, Candy Lane in the study hall. That was the most dreamed of affair for several weeks. At last! We came back as Seniors. Dave Dawes was elected to preside over our class for the first semester. Buster Neville was the second semester president. In early December we held our lost prom, “Snowflake Fantasy, at the Westport Beach Club. In January we presented our Senior Play, Slice It Thin. Then came our last dance of the year, the hop, which carried the theme of Senti- mental Memories. This dance was held at the Deauville Club in Santa Monica, the 23rd of May. On May 29, we held our Senior Holiday at Orange County Park. The last get-together of the year, before graduation, was the Banquet in June. With the completion of Graduation, this ended the high school days of the class of 52. In our hearts and in our minds there will always be the wonder- ful memories of the years which have just passed. FAREWELL Commence, graduates, commence To run, like leaves, from the hands Of the earth that has molded you To the arms of the world that awaits you! And find there need for your toil, Your task and contribution . . . And find there patience with Your rash, impatient pace. Though for your toil, at times. There may seem to be small reward, Remember that truly the reward Is Life and the Wisdom that comes Of toil itself. Sing forth the precept forever; From the throne of sublime men Comes Sublimated Man. Vow in one voice for all time Your marriage to Virtue, For it is only in her temple Can be found the treasures Of truth, of love, of beauty. Let joy be taken in such action For sorrow s banished Where wisdom reigns. Commence, graduates, commence! And do not stop if you should stumble For from the tip of the green. Green stock rises a radiance That bursts forth a blazing bloom. -FRANK HANSEN First Semester Closs Officers President-Bill Brooks Vice-Prcsidcnt-Roger Tulmcr Secretory-Trcosurcr-Jess Honk Second Semester Closs Officers Presidenf-Sam Corbroy Vicc-Prcsidcnt-Marilyn Blonklcy Secretary-Treosorcr-Joyce Mason Page 50 Acton, D. The activities featured were baseball games, be- tween both the boys and girls; tennis gomes; and best of all, everyone just loafed and ate. d ?6 Page 80 c iu£s To get along with others in play as well as in work is the most important factor that we gain from our clubs. There is the experience of leadership for the officers as well as friendship for the members. Inglewood has a variety of clubs for the interest of everyone. d a aces School dances have always been the most popular of all th school activities. There are sport dances after games and annual class dances. Certainly the summit of any Junior or Senior is their prom. This year Inglewood has had a most interesting variety in assemblies. Some of the most unusual and interesting ones have been those in which our own students have participated. The weekly assembly is a delight to everyone on campus. Page 81 orc estr Violins—D. Our high school education can prepare us either for our vocation, our marriage, or for a college or university; these are the courses that one can take, but the most important thing a high school teaches one is character and responsibility. Here we have the leaders of Inglewood High School, both faculty and students. To the faculty we are proud of the knowledge that they have given us and to the students we are proud of the self-government that they have so successfully executed. Page 111 A significant achievement in American life is the art of association. We might, therefore, expect our schools to emphasize this. Inglewood High School is to be congratulated on its fine program of student activities which helps us learn that important American art— the art of association. District Superintenden Undoubtedly the most valuable single item which we Americans have received as a heritage is our democratic way of life. Your high school hopes to make an important contribution toward helping you understand and practice democratic methods and processes; because it is only through your under- standing and your practice of these processes that our valuable heritage will be preserved. Much thanks goes to the coaches and teachers responsible for making much of the work of presenting this review easier. My deepest regret is that a number of swell people were either left out by accident, or were absent when pictures were taken. Here now are the guys who made the greatness of their sport, school, and city even greater. The guys you lockered with; the guys you ran with, swam with. The Sentinels grabbed their first win in the 52 Boy leogue cage seoson with o 53-31 win over the Torronce Tarters. Then come the week end that was supposed to decide whether or not the Sents could successfully defend their ‘57 Basketball championship. The Gerhart men were to foee Sonto Monica Friday and then return home to host the Redondo Seohowks Saturdoy. Coach Honk Gerhart and his hordwooders finished thot week end in sensotionol form. Much to the surprise of oil, they dropped Somo on the Vikes own floor, 35-30. They returned to the IHS hordwood the next night to give the Inglewood roofers one of the best exhibitions of deadly accuracy shooting that any cage rooters hove seen in quite a spell. They knocked off the Seohowks, 58-44. In the second quarter of that gome the Sents hit for 18 stroight points without missing a shot. The Sents traveled to Redondo to face the Seohowks for the second time in the season. Boom, the “Howks smocked the Gerhort men, 64-49. limping home from thot cotosfrophe, the Sents ployed host to the Somohi Vikings the next night. Boom, the Sentinels were smacked again, 53-43. Now, all the Sentinel cagers could hope for wos a three way tie for the loop chompionship, and this wos oil up to the Samohi-Redondo lilt. The Sentinel casabo tossers went on, however, and dropped the Beverly Hills Normons twice by scores of 43-38 and 61-48. Then they finished the 52 hoop season by lambasting the Olympions 57-35. Meonwhile, Redondo squeezed by Samo, 36-35. The seoson ended with Redondo first, Inglewood second, and Somohi third. Gabe Arrillago and Allen Herring were IHS‘ choice on all Boy leogue first team with Johnny Nethercott placing on the second team ond Dan Bora, honoroble mention. 8y garnering a second ploce in the league the Sentinels then went on to the CIF ployoffs. Lo and behold, who furnishes the first competition for the Green Wave, none other thon the Fobulous Five” themselves, the Compton Torbobes. The Torbobes were looking for their 29th straight win on o 28-0 win-loss record sported by the Compton five this year. The defending CIF champions lived up to their reputation by smiting the Sentinels out of CIF competition, 69-38. Page 150 By JACK PECK, El Centinela All season long the Varsity swimming team wos hondicoppcd by a severe lack of manpower. Accounting for almost all of the indi- vidually corned points were Dick Cole, Jack Peck, Ted Chambers, Bob Wccbc, and John Calderwood. Dick Cole finished his fourth seoson of swimming with a perfect score in the TOO yard breast stroke, os he went undcfcotcd in dual meet competition. He moved back to the B division, where he took the chompionship. He missed by o foot the year before. After o season of ups and downs, Jock Peck came through with o first place in Bay Leogue in the 200 yard freestyle. He split top honors with Phil Gay of Beverly Hills, in the 50 yard free at 25.6 seconds. Ted Chombers proved himself to be one of the finest divers in ClF. Some of his best dives were o front 1' } pike position, a running half- twist, o cutaway 1 Vj and near the end of the season a tunning 2’ } tude position. John Calderwood's backstroke ability netted him o second place berth in Boy League, and os he is a junior, he will be one of the team's stolwarts next year. Versatile 8ob Wccbc played in a piano concert, rushed to 8cverly Hills in time to win the individual medley, and got bock to school in time to be in a picture of the concert. Clark Rees, John Gough, John Cochrane and Bruce MacKcnzie were standouts on the B team, which placed second in Boy League. Breast strokcr Don Pettcr and Gordon Forbes in the backstroke were instrumental in getting the third place spot for the C team. c’S Back Row, left to right: C. Habersfich, J. Anders, W. Truth, D. By BOB LINDSEY, El Centinela Boasting of an abundance of stars in the field events and many standouts in the running events, the 1952 edition of the Inglewood High School track team once more brought glory to the Green and White by copping the Bay League flag for the second successive year. For the second time in as many years, the varsity squad overpowered the rest of the Bay League track contingents by an impressive score, and after this year's 71-37 drubbing, the rest of the league s teams are beginning to say, It never rains but it pours. For it was a very rainy day in April that Coach Dick Arnett poured the defending champs on the El Camino JC oval to again take the league cinder championship. After the rain and fog had cleared away it was seen that the Sentinels had six new league champs. Richie Braumbeck, Darrel Hailey, Bob Porter, Don King, Mickey Raftery, and Bob McKay all went home in possession of first place medals. Although the varsity cindermen finished the season unbeaten, their B's took a bottom berth and the C's wound up in fourth place. All in all, this year's track season can be called quite a success and the students and alumni of IHS are all looking forward to more bonner years in the future.
