At the beginning of the campus looms our new auditorium—modern in design—facile in operation—overwhelming in innovation. It remains needless to recite here what our acquisition of this auditorium—this assembly hall—this meeting place has done to make each student an even more component part of his school. Therefore we have attempted in a book re- flecting a full year of events to make our audi- torium the leading character in a story upon which it has had—and upon which it will con- tinue to have - so much bearing. 4 ■ • ■ ' . '■‘Tr- ■ ■ •' ■ ' rK’. i- Mrs. Lockett— to divers people this name signifies a variety of things. To the school at large, she is one of our finest educators. So much is she. this meritorious teacher, one would not expect her to participate and advise to the degree she does in the activities going on about her, some of which are far removed from her specialized field. It is here, too. she is well-known and well-loved. She respects and puts great faith in all people who have faith in. and respect for themselves and are willing to profit by her advice. In a group she’s known not only as an honored member, a savant and friend but is also notorious for her droll sense of humor. She truly loves life and enjoys living. To those seniors who have her for Senior English, she is an understanding friend, a gracious counselor, as well as an expressive clarifier. From pioneer stock. Mrs. Lockett has fron- tier spirit. She loves English literature above all other types. One of her pet theories is that a literary work is best understood and appreciated by a sympathetic understanding of its author. This perspective she applies to everyday human relations. It is in recognition of the myriad services beyond her normal duties, in appreciation of her easily comprehended methods of instruc- tions. and her inexhaustible supply of fresh ideas as a teacher that we dedicate the 1951 Creen-and-White to her. It is, indeed, with a deep sense of dedica- tion to her and to the cause for which she has devoted so much that we here pay just tribute. 7 •' MTJUUv One of the first activities to start out the year, the G.A.A. During the past school year this organization has guided at assemblies, served at banquets, acted as traffic guards, and ren- dered many other innumerable services to the school. With Mrs. Madland as their ad- visor. the Honor Board has contributed more than their share of time to school service. me 1ST SEMESTER House of Representatives 2ND SEMESTER INGLEWOOD'S FOOTLIGHT GUILD class presented in June of this year the dramatic mystery ‘“Kind Lady”. June was a little late for the usual appearance of the annual production, but the Edward Chodorov thriller required a considerable amount of extra work. The story revolves around a wealthy dowager who out of kind- ness takes in a destitute stranger off the streets for a cup of tea. It seems that he has a sick wife and some friends who turn out to be gangsters. All in all what happens in the three exciting acts makes for an entertaining evening in the new auditorium. Not only do we go to school for an education but to learn how to participate in the social life of the campus. This experience is vital in the life we lead after graduation. Inglewood has always had a great deal to offer in activities. We have tried to have clubs to fit the needs of every individual, among them being service clubs, honor clubs and clubs of general hobbies. With Inglewood's serious problem of being over- crowded, arranging club meetings has been very diffi- cult, but there has been enough cooperation and enthusiasm to conquer it. Our new auditorium is certainly a great asset to our clubs and organizations. In it have been held meet- ings, movies and interesting talks by guest speakers. Having a new auditorium has made it possible to have many more activities than we have had these past few years. Page Thirty-five Senior Orchestra Director Student Director Mr. Wheatherly Richard Jamison We are very proud to have the largest High School Orchestra in the State of Cali- fornia. Our orchestra is not only the largest but one of the finest, as we have won first place at the festivals for the past few years. Besides playing at many programs and as- semblies, they have their annual concert and they have played at the intermissions of our school plays. We hope that our orchestra will continue their fine work. Page Thirty-six Senior Band. Much credit and appreciation goes to our fine Senior Band, and their fine, hard-working director, Mr. Metcalf. This Band has been the backbone of our school spirit at our athletic games. They have played at rallies and other student activities. They have worked many hours to perfect their marching during half-time at the foot- ball games. We are sure that everyone was very pleased and surprised by the originality they had in their stunts this year. Their annual Band Concert was, this year, better than ever. And every one who attend- ed, will never quite forget it. Student Director Director Bill Lamm Mr. Metcalf Page Thirty-seven A Cappella Choir Director Miss Spurgin Accompanist Mrs. Daniels Our A Cappella Choir is one of the finest in the Bay League area. They have presented us with some of the best programs that we have had in our new auditorium. Their work does not end by presenting only our school with their beautiful programs, they have sung for various programs for the city, different types of special meetings, the P.T.A., luncheons and banquets. We must indeed pay tribute to the Choir's very wonderful director, Miss Vivian Spurgin, for without her it is doubtful that the Choir could be what it is. ■-'Kjy8 ’ Page Thirty-eight DANCE BAND has sent many rhythmic strains of our favorite melodies through the auditorium. Their director is Mr. Weatherly, whom we are very proud of. MODERN MUSIC has had many activities this year including playing at several assemblies in our new auditorium and appearing on a talent television program. Director is Mr. Murry. Thus was the Freshmen Skating Party held at Westchester Skateland, Wednesday, December 13, 1950, at 3:00 p.m. It was very unusual to see Miss McMonies, Miss Cholcher and Mr. Aguirre skating and playing a different role other than the regular school teaching. Approximately 165 to 175 students attended this party. There were no other mishaps other than when Don Baird fell and broke his arm. 'I’he party ended at 6:00 p.m., and everyone went home feeling very tired but happy. Page Fifty-two SOPHOMORE CABINET sophomores ADVISORS Mrs. McCausland Mr. Barnett Page Fifty-three Acton, 0. To the fun that we’ve bad at old Inglewood High. We want you to know that it's been really grand. For Inglewood High is the best in the land. CHORUS So long it's been good to know ya. So long it's been good to know ya. So long it's been good to know ya. Our jour years are now at end So we've got to be driftin' along. We’ll always remember the teachers we've had, Who’ve put up with pupils both good and both bad. They’d ask for a truant, we'd tell them no more. But picked up our books and tiptoed out the door, singing—Chorus Old Inglewood Varsity just can t be beat. We’ve swept the other schools right off their feet. When they saw our guys and the game had begun, They turned on their heels and they started to run, singing—Chorus Now our years are through and we re saying farewell, Our Principal Kenny has really been swell. Our hearts will be with you though we’re far away, And now as the year ends it comes time to say—Chorus Wi'h the lost four years still fresh in our minds, we wou d like to offer our congratulations to the following seniors who have contributed so much to the betterment of the class and the Student body os a whole. To all the members of Senior Honor Board for the hard work which they do, which too often goes unappreciated or even unnoticed. To all the seniors who over went out for competitive sports. To all the seniors who sorvod on the class cabinets throughout the four years and to the students who backed the class activities. FAREWELL Farewell, you children of the sun With one beam shown for every one With one step gained and one flag flown With arms full of promise and few seeds sown With unchartered progress before you vowed In wild fields of time never plowed With Happiness, Pleasure, and shrouded Sorrow With Heartbreak, Pain . . . and unveiling morrow, With wakening dawn stretched above Kissing the memorials of Nature’s love Along the highways of listening Man Who quietly heard, then homeward ran And toiled till Purpose from his hand fell: For this, children of the sun, Farewell! c j Z fa is for y SOPHOMORE SOCK DANCES Now we hove come to the end of four years, years filled with fun and memories which wc shall never forget. The fall of 1947 saw a new class of freshmen enter Ingle- wood. They were a good class, full of ideas and looking forward to four years of fun and excitement. As our first class presidents we elected Jack Hannan and Jim Stewart. Under the supervision of our most wonderful advisor, Mrs. Sara Scoville, we enjoyed a marvelous picnic at Ladcra Park that April. The fall of 1948 saw this same class come back as seasoned sophomores. As our class presidents wc chose Vince Benstcad and George Mcchleis. We held sock dances in the Boys' Gym during the noon periods, and on the whole we had a wonderful year. In 1949 we came back as upperclassmen at long last! As our president we elected first Cal Potter and then Dick Anderson. On March 17th, the Study Hall was converted into a Hawaiian Paradise for the Junior Prom, our first big dance. In June we picked our colors — blue and grey. The new Senior Honor Board proudly displayed these colors as they ushered at the Graduation Exercises. On December 8th, at the beautiful Bel Aire Bay Club we held our prom. The theme was Christmas Dream and the decorations were built around Christmas trees and bright ornaments. In January, the senior play class presented the hilarious comedy, One Mad Night , in the brand new George M. Green Auditorium. Soon after, plans were started for our Senior Holiday to Catalina, under the guidance of our newly elected class president, Neal Taylor. At the end of May, we held our last dance — the hop — Memory Lane , at the California Riviera Country Club. The Banquet, held the night before Graduation, was the last social activity which all the members of the Senior Class attended with the exception of Graduation itself. With Graduation came the completion of our high school years and the beginning of a whole new life; but in our minds, and in our hearts there will always remain the memories of those wonderful years that have just passed. •8)6 MOMENT SIGN OF DISTINCTION SENIOR PLAY Page One Hundred Two ISsIHBBbKSB 3 2§ M$m % H .til E r-aiSP i •• ‘ • • ' • .’♦ ’ '■-. fj ' Vi -',' v • Jf'.'- « '. : '-V. CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas party is one of the most popular of G.A.A. events. The gift this year was a check (made up of con- tributions from all G.A.A. members) to the Baptist Children’s Home, to be used in the purchases of • a slide for their play- ground. . Seated on Santa’s (Shirley Dilts) lap is Helen Wragg. G. A. A. If any building on our campus could be called the heart of the school it is my belief that that building is the auditorium. Without it our entire program was greatly handicapped. I am very grateful that it was completed in time for this year’s senior class to be able to benefit from its use, and I am sure that many future classes will be better prepared as graduates of this school because of its existence. The new auditorium is deserving of the attention you are giving it in this book. My sincere congratulations to all Sentinels on the completion of another very successful year. Kenneth M.
