Text from Pages 1 - 166 of the 1950 volume:

1 I Our school forever changes; ohl buildings are lorn down; new ones are built. Each year familiar faces leave our campus, but in their places new ones soon appear. The idea of the old soon vanish as new thoughts and new methods spring forth in never ending suc- cession. And yet, underneath, a feeling of harmony prevails, which overcomes all obstacles in achieving continual advancement. It is this spirit of harmony, these new ideas that we have tried to capture within these pages, which forever record the remembrances of your high school years. As the years pass on and these memories be- come dimmer, may this hook help you to vividly recall them, and transport you hack in mind so that you can relive these moments and again become a part of Inglewood High School. r'Kir- ■ o-nev s i. Few people on campus realize the variety of tasks which fall upon the Stage Crew Direc- tor. During the day he teaches two classes — stage- crew and audio-visual machines; in night school he teaches woodshop. This, however, is but a small part of his service to the school. He and his stage crews, many of whom are now Inglewood business men, have ftude sets, and worked lights and scenery shifts for musicals, variety shows, Christmas programs, ■fcrstivals, concerts, rallies and assemblies. There is a lot of hard work connected with producing an annual, but there is fun to it also. In planning such an im- portant project as a group, many happy relationships are built. This spirit was present at the staffs Christmas party, and in the many happy hours spent working over coke bottles and ‘'Korn Kurls” late into the afternoon. Visiting song and yell leaders from Santa Monica High were present to add to the morning’s enthusiasm. With the judging of the room for decorations the day ended a complete success. In the shadows of old Inglewood, there is growing a bright new sprout, which will someday grow and spread until there is nothing left but a memory of the old buildings with their towering countenances, ornate, yet prim. With these old buildings go the railings the boys love so, the slippery steps of building six, the archways we walk beneath, the quaint fireplaces in the history class-rooms, the stairs of building three worn by thousands of footsteps, and that locker always to be remembered as the favorite meeting place, with its jumble of books, shoes, coats, and the homework paper, that you never could find. A new school brings a new dignity, something to be proud of and protect from harm. The shining new buildings will gleam between shrubs and trees as a call to knowledge. Even though the new school will afford many memories to its students, none will be more cherished than the memories that we, who have trod her corridors, have for the old Inglewood. Page Sixteen -__________ T M Jr fhaf your Memo, A sujyesfs +hai H s s ior J uJe. han ihis. u means s another school year comes to a close it is our earnest hope that your high school has been able to make a contribution to each of you which will help prepare you for life in the modern world. Your theme, harmony, as expressed by the musical notes in this book, is appropriate and important. At Inglewood High School our successes and accomplishments, to a large extent, have been possible because of our harmonious relationships with each other, as individuals and as groups. The fine response which has been given to the many things you as a student body have been asked to do, is a constant source of great satisfaction. It is our earnest hope that those lessons in human relations which you have learned here, may be with you always and contribute to a happy and satisfying life for each of you. Our loss will he Morningside High School’s gain, for he is to he principal of the new school. Since 1945. when Mr. Waldmann headed up our guidance program, both teachers and students have found him to he congenial, sympathetic — a good friend. His competence is evident by the job he has done. Mr. Waldmann came to Inglewood High School in 1936 as a shop and physical education teacher. His fourth year, he was made head of the Mechanic Arts department and hoys’ coun- selor. The following year his work was teaching freshmen problems, mechanical drawing and serving as head of the Remedial department. In May, 1943 the Army Air Force added A. John Waldmann to their ranks. For two years he worked all over the Western and Southern United States and served, the 2nd year, as an administrator of advanced pilot training. Inglewood High School welcomed Mr. Waldmann home in September 1946 when he returned as Director of Guidance of Curriculum. He continued to fill this position, until the middle of this year, at which time he was succeeded by Mr. Merlin Wagner, former senior counsellor, and took up his duties as principal of Morningside High School. Congratulations. Mr. Waldmann we are confident that success will follow success. Presidents Offi icerd JOYCE SADER V. Its 50 members were chosen in the last quarter of their junior year according to the number of points they had earned, their participation in activities, and a satisfactory grade average. Under the guiding hand of Mrs. Madland, they met conscientiously every two weeks, meanwhile working as hall guards and guides, taking tickets at games, and helping with our campus clean-up program. The very first service they performed was to serve the senior banquet for the class of '49. Since then, among other things, they served at the Chamber of Commerce dinner and the Service Club Banquet. Bill Tackett has been the president and his committees chose a curved emblem with English lettering. Senior Honor Board enjoyed two social gatherings — a party- given at a member's home and a banquet. All Inglewood High School appreciated the service given by these students who have contributed their time and energy so unselfishly. Senior Honor Board, your fellow sentinels salute you. It was held in our grand ballroom (study hall), which was so gaily decorated that it seemed a part of the Mardi Gras. Colorful refreshments were served also in keeping with the Mardi Gras theme. As you can see by the picture in the upper left hand corner, every- one was enjoying themselves tremendously. THE FASHION SHOW The Girls League sponsored the Annual Fashion Show, adding a little life to our school days. The beautiful clothes were modeled by “experienced ’ models from our own school. Except for a bit of nail biting on the part of the nervous models everything went off smoothly. The girls really enjoyed the clothes and the entertainment that followed. THE LEVI LEAP 'fhe annual gingham-levi dance sponsored by the Boys’ League was really some dance! With the cute way of advertising — which was the brain storm of the cabinet — and the informal way of dress, the League had a dance to catch everyone’s fancy. Not only have they donated their services in these ways, but they have also sung for special luncheons, P.T.A. meetings, and banquets. SENIOR ORCHESTRA We are very proud of our music department. Our orchestra is one of the largest in California. Through the fine leadership of Mr. Wheatherly, it has become an or- ganization to which anyone would be honored to belong. One of the highlights of the year was the beautiful Christmas program presented by the Inglewood High School Orchestra at Crozier auditorium. Under the direction of Mrs. Na- dine Tiner and Mrs. Melba Wend- land. the recital became one of the most beautiful ever to have been presented at Inglewood High. The program was built around the colorful theme, “Rainbow of Music”, which was carried out in setting, songs, and piano numbers. MODERN MUSIC This group, under the direction of Mr. Murray, have gained much in experience while playing for banquets, luncheons and programs of all sorts, and they have given much in pleasure and entertain- ment. during the past year. These are the three principles upon which the group is based: 1. Lots of rhythm. 2. Lots of fun. 3. Lots of experience. Prologue: The End of the Hoad. One dark night a Negro servant on a great Southern plan- tation discovers two ragged wanderlusts resting by the gate at the dusty roadside. He mistakes the younger adventurer for his supposedly deceased master. W hen the destitute nomads agree to take advantage of this fortunate misidentification, there promises to he an enjoyable evening of comedy, sus- pense, and romance, through hilariously contrived situations, humorous lines and unpredictable characters. j- ahi Jirdt by Wilson Lee Dodd Cast of Characters Danny......................Fred J. It seems that the younger sis- ter has been writing morale-boosting letters to a young serviceman overseas. Along with these letters, the soldier received the older sister’s portrait and striking signature beneath each “sincerely yours”. All is innocence, ignor- ance and bliss until the enamoured G.I. “comes home to roost with a tell-tale gleam in his eye for the girl in the photograph. This was awarded on the basis of the number of students in at- tendance at the college from each High School, and by the size of the school from which they came. The presentation was received for our school by the Scholarship Society. FRESHMAN CLOTHING COLLECTION ASSEMBLY One of the most enjoy- able assemblies of the year was presented to us by the jazz band of El Camino Col- lege. Page Fifty-five MARTY ERNAGA Marty started coaching football at Inglewood in 1942. That year the B's won the Bay League Championship under his expert coaching. Returning to Inglewood in 1946 after four years in the aimed service, he again coached the B’s ending up second in the Bay League. In 1947 the B’s again won the championship. He has been coaching Varsity since 1948 and is very highly respected in the Bay League Coaching Fraternity as a thorough fundamentalist and an inspiring leader. NORMAN VERRY This is Norm’s first year co-coaching Varsity Football with Marty Krnaga. Being of very small stature it is surprising that he is a lineman coach. According to Coach Krnaga. and I quote, “He is a very popular addition to the Inglewood Coaching Staff. IVAN CAREY Mr. Carey has been teaching at Inglewood for twenty-four years — this year becoming head coach after the departure of Arthur Badenoch. He coaches Inglewood’s Swimming and Water Polo teams. He says that for the material we’ve had this year we’ve done very well. The last three years have been weak ones — but the kids are trying — if we keep up the good work we ll have a good team. CHUCK ZIMMERMAN This was Chuck’s first year at Inglewood. For a beginner he has done a terrific job coaching our fine B and C Swimming and Water Polo teams. He says that we have an exceptional C team which should win Bay League this year —the prospects are good for our B team next year. HANK GERHART Hank has been teaching at Inglewood since 1925. He has been coaching a fine basketball team for the past fifteen years. Last year under his expert coaching we won tin- Bay League for the first time since 1932. This year was a close one — we came in second but won the Consolation Tournament at San Diego. DAVID HENGSTELER Dave started coaching at Inglewood in 1948. He coaches our wrestling and B football teams. Last year under his fine coach ing we won the Bay League Championship. This year we came in third in C.I.F. after scoring more points (31 than have ever been scored in this High School area. He says that we ought to have a good team next year and that we’ll be better in football, too. DICK ARNETT Dick is an old veteran at Inglewood. Trying his best at keeping Inglewood's A1 track team on top of the Bay League, he has succeeded in having them come out first or second in 26 out of the 28 years of his expert coaching. This year Inglewood came in second to Redondo by a margin of only 1 ty® points. (Redondo 46: Inglewood 44 £.) LEUZINGER vs. INGLEWOOD 33 — 20 Leuzinger’s scoring machine started grinding in the second quarter, when Don Poulson went 28 yards on a quarterback sneak, making the score 6-0. Inglewood was quick to come hack. On the first play after Leuzinger’s kickoff, Joe Bellante took off and out-running the whole Leu- zinger team, went 61 yards for 6 points. Later in the same stanza, Poulson again scored for the Olympians. The conversion was good. Inglewood came back again, this time on a 37-yard pass from Joe Clark to Dick Anderson. The score stood 13-13 at the half. In the second half, Kd Schmidt scored twice for Leuzinger, once on a 21- yard run and again when he caught a 28- yard pass from Poulson. The Olympians' final tally came in the last quarter on a pass from Poulson to George Johnson. In the last minute and a half, Inglewood made a last determined comeback when they scored Oil a pass from Joe Clark to Bruce Cayley. JORDAN vs. INGLEWOOD 2 — 19 Joe Clark's keen passing led Inglewood to a 19-2 upset over a heavier Long Beach squad. The Sentinels’ passing attack started clicking in the second quarter when Clark connected with Bruce Cayley for 19 yards and the first touchdown. Cay- ley scored again the same quarter on a pass from Marion Prohert. In the third quarter the Sentinels came hack more pow- erful than ever. Joe Clark's 23-yard pass to Roger llydukc paved the way for our third T.D. Jordan’s only tally of the eve- ning came late in the final quarter. The Panthers’ hard-hitting ends nailed Joe Bel- lante behind the goal line after Joe inter- cepted a long pass. This gave the Jordan team their only score of the game. REDONDO vs. INGLEWOOD 6 — 19 The scoring didn't start until the sec- ond quarter when Redondo took a 6-0 lead. But in the same stanza, with about two minutes left to play, Inglewood took to tin; air. Joe Clark fired a pass 37 yards to Roger Hydukc, who made a spectacular «living catch in the end zone. The conver- sion failed and the half ended 6-6. In the third quarter Inglewood's scoring combin- ation. Clark to Ilyduke, was good for 23 yards, and the Indians' second tally. Ingle- wood fullback Walt Robertson pranced over for the extra point. Joe Clark topped off a furious last quarter when he gallope«l around left end on a quarterback sneak for the final score. YELL LEADERS SHERMAN THOMPSON TOM JETTER BOB KRAMER BILL CUMMINGS MR. In the sec- ond half, Clark's passing accounted for the final tally of the evening. Roger Hyduke. Inglewood's speedy right end, snatched a 23 yard toss for the score. Jim Stewart tore through guard for the extra point. F.l Segundo got its 2 points in the second stanza when the Eagle's punt was grounded in the end zone by John Mitchell, giving F.l Segundo a safety. Inglewood’s passing attack was made more spectacular by the fact that the field was muddy and full of water. September of 1946 saw 600 very new freshmen adjust themselves to a very new program. We elected Lynn Klienman to be our first class president and he served for the entire year. Under the guidance of Miss Rivas and Mr. Kliason, we enjoyed a talent assembly in the fall and a picnic at I-adera Park in May — something that had never been done before. In June we decorated for Baccalaureate for the class of ’47. The fall of 1947 the “intelligent” sophomores were telling the freshmen to get their tickets for the elevator in building six. Harriet l-efkowitz and Don Genet were our presidents; class advisors were Miss Nieto and Mr. Wilcox. Two talent assemblies, starring sophomores, were claimed to he the best ever seen at old I.H.S. October was highlighted by the “Pig Skin Capers.” with the lilting music of Stanley Carle. Our second class picnic, in May, was one to be remembered • the faculty bubble gum contest and everyone playing catch with raw eggs. W'e decorated for graduation for the class of 48. As juniors, we had quite a controversy over the English “I on the class emblem in place of the traditional Indian head, and the fact that the majority of the boys ordered jackets instead of sweaters. Our Junior prom changed the Study Hall into a lovely plantation with white pillars and a rose covered arbor, for the theme was “Southern Plantation.” We danced to the melodies of the Rhylhmaires. In our new senior sweaters, we ushered for Baccalaureate and graduation; the girls carried flower covered arches for the graduating seniors. Beginning in September of 1949, Miss Nieto and Mr. Lewin helped the president. Bob Kerr, and the cabinet plan an unequalled prom that was given at the Chase Hotel in Santa Monica. It was called “Winter Fantasy” — with Christmas trees, the nearby ocean and Ike Carpenter’s music the evening was complete. In May we began a whirl of activities that ended with graduation. First was the senior holiday. May 18th. The class was divided, so we were given a choice of either a picnic at Pasadena’s Brookside Park or a day’s excursion to Catalina. A good time was had by all. At the end of the month we had our last dance—the hop — at the Westport Beach Club in Playa Del Key. The theme was “Bon Voyage”; the decorations were in the motif of a ship. The height of the evening was the crowning of King Neptune. The last social gathering was the banquet, “Down Memory Lane.” On the tables were dolls dressed in caps and gowns, and small scenes depicting all our activities in the past four years. The reading of the will and prophecy brought us closer together and gave us many laughs. Sunday before graduation was Baccalaureate, an inspirational service; we wore our gowns. Then came graduation — the grand finale to four years. The die has been cast, the mold made, and Inglewood’s future citizens go forth to make their bid for success. D,'L The end: The close of a book; The finish of an hour, a day, a One book read is another one begun. Hour follows hour; Day. day; And year, year. For wherever, whenever is there An end unfollowed by a beginning? A half century ended is a half century commenced; With new tools of destruction, New pathways of death, yet new roads to immortality. The ending of peace is war; The ending of war, peace. Then war and peace and peace and war. The end is a pause, never finality. The end is an imperative sigh, Taking breath enough to begin again. The end of school is the beginning of a new existence; With a rest between ending in another beginning. Graduation is commencement to new and better things, According to how well all the years and their Privileges were treated. And so it is the remainder of our lives: And death is the sigh, the rest, the pause so necessary At the end, tolling our achievements Before a commencement To our newer and better lives. Page One Hundred Thirty- Today we are assembled Beneath the Green and White, Whose honor and whose glory To all the beacons light. We know that she will guide us As life's ways we plod, And now we offer from our shrine A prayer to God. It has been a wonderful experience working as Art Editor and I shall never forget it. I hope you will all like our Modern Music Theme that we have chosen for the annual this year. Pat Kaiser Whenever I think of my Senior year, the thing that I will remember first is Annual Staff and being Editor. There is nothing quite so wonderful as working together with a group of people to produce something that will be enjoyed by others. The entire staff has done a fine job and I want to thank them all for their hard work and cooperation. Marlene Zander We all wish to give recognition and special thanks to: Elizabeth Scott for being such a wonderful friend besides a helpful advisor; Frank Hansen for contributing poetry and play write-ups; Mrs. Grayce Micek, of Lyall Studios, our photographer; Vincent Newcomer, who supervised our art work and did much of the special lettering; Mr. A1 Rogers for his interest and cooperation in planning the book; Metropolitan Engraving Company for engravings; Mr. John Bugel and Pio Venturelli for their expert advice on copy matter and printing; Murray and Gee, Inc., for printing our book; Mr. Bill Retchin, who assisted us in choosing our cover.
