It is with a feeling of deep loss that we l i l fare- well to a leather who has given many years of de- voted service to Inglewood High. Miss Luella M. Hughes, who retires this June, has been a real in- spiration to those who. have come under her influ- ence. Dozens of her foroier pupils still regard her as a personal and permanent friend. Miss Hughes graduated in music and art from tin Michigan State Normal College. She did grad- uate work at University of Michigan, University of California at Berkeley, and University of South- alifornin. Before coming to liiglewopd, Miss Hughes taught at Brawley Union High School and at Crossjudiit Union High. She came to Inglewood as Head of tlu Music Department, and served in this capacity for a number of years. During this time, many community programs, assembly pro- grams, and operettas owed their success to her talents, her efficiency, and her patience. Out- standing among the productions which she direct cd were the operettas. ”11. M. S. Pin afore, and ‘•Chimes of Normandy Miss Hughes later joined the rl Department of I. II. S., and has taught Art I for the past few years. During her years here -In- lias been active in student body and faculty affairs. She was I‘ac- uity Vice-President for two years, and served on the f aculty Belicement Committee for two years. Thirty-five years ago Coach Art Budenoch came to Inglewood High School to assume the leadej ship of physical education and athletics. At that time the school, with an enrollm less than two hundred, boasted but four sports: football, baseball, basketball, and track. Mr. Bad- enoeh, who at the University of Chieago hail been an outstanding player on one of Amos Alonzo J? Stagg’s most famous football squads and a team- mate of the great Walter Eckersoll, coached In- glewood's smmd year of football with only forty boys in the physical education department. (His first squad consisted of fifteen men, and on memorable occasion lu- finished a game with only ten players on the field!) Mr. Badenoeh not only built athletics at Ingle- wood High School but also was instrumental in founding the California Interscholastic Federa- tion. He aided in the first leaguing of the schools of Southern California and the establishing of the precedents of the Bay League. He achieved a tional reputation as a just and impartial official in major college games. Few inen during their -- -------- Coach Badenoch has been more than a coach. He has been a friend and an example to thousand$j H of hoys who have known his friendly smile, his readiness to give sound advice and lend a helping hand—above all, his essential sprightness of char- acter which instills in his associates high princi- ples. courage, and faith. He has established for Inglewood High School a reputation for the best in sportsmanship.
