Miss Hazel Rosi- Lawrence Mrs. Stella Chappell Scofield In the fall of 1916 two young teachers were added to the faculty of Inglewood High School, itself a young school, boasting in the eleventh year of its existence a student body of only a few hundred and a faculty of seventeen. Hazel Rose Lawrence was beginning her teaching career as Head of the Department of Oral English. Stella Chappell had left Willamette University in Oregon to teach English at Inglewood. The two became fast friends, and it is fitting that they should share the place of honor as they retire from our faculty together. In those early days the school was so small that everybody knew everybody, and students and faculty alike participated in school parties and activities. During her first year in Inglewood Miss Chappell (now Mrs. Scofield) started a school paper, which was named El Centinela.” She and the first editors spent long hours on Saturdays laying out the dummy and correcting proof. She was also for many years the faculty adviser of the Green and White,” and published besides a Literary Edition of the Green and White, comprising stories, essays, and poems written by students in the English classes. In her second year she became Head of the English Department and held this position for many years. Outside as well as inside the classroom she has been the friend and confidant of countless boys and girls whose lives have been influenced by her kindliness, friendly interest, and encouragement. Miss Lawrence has been the power behind the footlights at almost every play that has been presented from the Inglewood High School stage. Seniors plays, operettas, Eootlight Guild productions, and assembly programs have owed their success to her talents, her efficiency, and her patience. Sharing with her the long hours of rehearsals, the fun, the sudden emergencies, the breathless pre-curtain excitement, hundreds of students have grown to know her and love her as a personal and permanent friend. Words of farewell are only words, but Inglewood High School, students and faculty, will miss these two.
