Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1948 volume:

Published by the Student Body of Inglewood High School Vivian Joy Wyss, Editor-hi-Chief George Salmon, Art Editor As the old order changeth yielding place to new our changing academic world and ever- changing campus keep pace with progress through education. Although our destiny lies solely in the hands of acquired knowledge and its proper appli- cation, our thoughts throughout life shall often- times revert to the pleasant recollections of dances, friends, class associations, and good times together at our Alma Mater. Today, Sentinels of Inglewood are prepared for a clearer comprehension of the future world through opportunities gained in CAMPUS LIFE. LEADERSHIP Our administrators and instructors, loyal and inspir- ing men and women, encourage student government. SCHOLARSHIP Seniors -commence life unafraid. Juniors — prepare for things ahead. Sophomores eager to learn. Freshmen ambitious youth. FELLOWSHIP Large and small clubs merge linguists, scholars, act- ors, musicians, scientists, and sportsmen into a unity — Inglewood High. SPORTSMANSHIP Win or lose — our Sentinels fight with dignity of bearing. FRIENDSHIP Sentinels spend many never-to-be-forgotten hours to- gether at work and play through activities. Mr. George C. Barnum will long be remembered by the Seniors of '•18 as their sincere friend and adviser through four years of high school life. No class activity or committee was complete without his kindly advice and enthusiastic help. Proms, assemblies and the class play were successfully planned and executed with his eager assistance and interest. The crowing social event of the Senior calendar was the never-to-be- forgotten Christmas prom. The theme ' Sleigh Bells” was a gay motif for decorations which transformed the study hall into a fairyland. Great fun was had by the committee in charge of decorations, as they worked with Mr. Barnum in the Woodshop designing, building, and painting the Christmas village, and Santa with his package-filled sleigh drawn by reindeer. Expert craftsmanship created these lovely decorations, for Mr. Barnum spent many hours in their construction. No task has been too difficult or tedious for him as he worked for his Seniors. Because the members of the class cannot adequately express their affection and esteem for him, they have chosen to honor Mr. Barnum in the yearbook. It is with great pleasure that the annual staff dedicates the 19-18 edition of the Green and White to Mr. George C. Barnum. Miss Hazel Rosi- Lawrence Mrs. Stella Chappell Scofield In the fall of 1916 two young teachers were added to the faculty of Inglewood High School, itself a young school, boasting in the eleventh year of its existence a student body of only a few hundred and a faculty of seventeen. Hazel Rose Lawrence was beginning her teaching career as Head of the Department of Oral English. Stella Chappell had left Willamette University in Oregon to teach English at Inglewood. The two became fast friends, and it is fitting that they should share the place of honor as they retire from our faculty together. In those early days the school was so small that everybody knew everybody, and students and faculty alike participated in school parties and activities. During her first year in Inglewood Miss Chappell (now Mrs. Scofield) started a school paper, which was named El Centinela.” She and the first editors spent long hours on Saturdays laying out the dummy and correcting proof. She was also for many years the faculty adviser of the Green and White,” and published besides a Literary Edition of the Green and White, comprising stories, essays, and poems written by students in the English classes. In her second year she became Head of the English Department and held this position for many years. Outside as well as inside the classroom she has been the friend and confidant of countless boys and girls whose lives have been influenced by her kindliness, friendly interest, and encouragement. Miss Lawrence has been the power behind the footlights at almost every play that has been presented from the Inglewood High School stage. Seniors plays, operettas, Eootlight Guild productions, and assembly programs have owed their success to her talents, her efficiency, and her patience. Sharing with her the long hours of rehearsals, the fun, the sudden emergencies, the breathless pre-curtain excitement, hundreds of students have grown to know her and love her as a personal and permanent friend. Words of farewell are only words, but Inglewood High School, students and faculty, will miss these two. Our administrators and instructors, merged into an edifying unity, encour- age us in virtuous living, educational skills, and democratic ideals through student government. in id tra tion Dr. H. Fred Heisner Superintendent Centinela Valley Union High School District One of the greatest satisfactions of life is friendship. It is the friends we make who give life its meaning. Young people in high school feel this need stronger than at any other school level. These friendships are possible because of the opportunities campus life affords. The theme Campus Life” is therefore well chosen. May we dedicate this annual to a richer and fuller campus life. H. Fred Heisner. The selection of Campus Life” as a theme is most appropriate because included in it are all of the activities which make our school, and it is the impression made on each of you by the total of these activities that is so extremely important as a basis for your future. Leadership — Scholarship — Fellowship — Sportsmanship — Friendship, are goals worthy of Sentinel tradi- tion of the past and the Sentinel hope for the future. Congratulations on your achievements and best wishes for your continuing success. Kenneth M. Hurlbert. G. W. BRADFORD VERNON P. SPENCER B. M. GALLOWAY JOHN D. FLANAGAN J. ELLSWORTH PUTNAM DICK HENSLEY 1st Semester President 2nd Semester President wJJouAe of l epredentatiueA Senior J4onor (J3oarJ Inaugurated in '45, the Senior Honor Board, composed of twenty-five Senior boys and twenty-five Senior girls — selected as Juniors through their outstanding leadership records — is one of the leading service organizations at Inglewood High. Serving the school in various capacities, the Honor Board's chief duty is the maintenance of campus traffic control between periods and at noon. Of course, all you Sentinels have heard the familiar saying, ' Other stairway down, please.” Which way do you go — or need we say more??? Asked to serve at a Teachers' Institute Luncheon held in the Study Hall on the afternoon of the Beverly Hills game, an opportunity was provided for the sponsors to discover either the loyal and energetic members or the football haters of the group. But—on the P.T.A. Back-to-School Night, everyone turned out in full force to guide rhe bewildered parents to their classes and to laugh at their feeble and exhausted efforts to climb (or crawl up) the stairs. Participating in the Hi Jinks, the girls of the Honor Board thought it appropriate to put on a refined, uplifting skit to show the outstanding characteristics and morals of the group. The result a tavern scene — but all in fun! An annual banquet — the Senior Honor Board's one social event of the year — was held at the Switzerland, one of the most picturesque restaurants in Los Angeles. The Student Body wishes to thank the Senior Honor Board for serving graciously whenever needed, and executing their duties to the utmost. Our courageous tribesmen broke ground for future conflicts by massacring the El Segundo Eagles 12 to 7. Less than a moon passed until the Beverly Hills Nor- mans felt the blows of our war clubs being scalped 26 to 6. Conquering and triumphant our warriors, now- on the warpath, felt sure of victory over the Torrance Tartars but were ambushed 7 to 6 by an unexpected spear-thrust in the last seconds of the game. Stunned by this rebuff, the Sentinel Warfarers fell prey to the revengeful Redondo Seahawks with the score 2 to 12. After many traditional poww-ow-s and w-ar councils, we passed the peace pipe and went into battle with our arch-enemies, the Leuzinger Olympians, triumphing over them 9 to 0. A week later, the tribe was con- quered in a hard-fought struggle with the Jordan Pan- thers— final score 12 to 7. At the end of the trail, the fighting and courageous Sentinel Braves were sent to the Happy Hunting Grounds by the Bay League Champs, the Santa Monica Vikings, with the score 33 to 6. Come join the G.A.A. and have a lot of fun. shouted the fifth-period executive officers and coaches last September when they invited any I.H.S. girl to become a member of the after-school organization sponsored by Miss Julia Rodgers. Playdays provided an opportunity for girls to compete against one another in games of volley ball, basketball, hockey, and base- ball. They were held at Inglewood and other Bay League schools to emphasize friendship and sportsmanship the major objectives of every G.A.A. Among the other popular activities executed by this organization are swimming and tennis, the latter being the only activity which provides a chance for girls to earn Bay League letters. Various dances and figure stretchers accompanied by the misleading lilt of piano music were also a popular part of this physical education program. The G.A.A., besides being an athletic organization, has had many fine social affairs. Perhaps the most outstanding of these have been: the Christmas Party, the Mothers’ Tea, the annual banquet, and the initiation ceremonies topped off with a spaghetti feed in the study hall. We are proud to congratulate our Girls' Athletic Association for the fine work they have done in promoting their objectives — friendship and sportsmanship.
