This past year has brought many changes into your lives, and you have accepted them as loyal Sentinels and true Americans. So we present to you the story of your life at Inglewood High: that thrilling football game, the glorious prom, and the memorable experiences you have had during that eventful year, 1943. _ Content You were guided by Our Teachers You were active in Our Student Government You were thrilled by Our Productions You had fun with Your Classmates You were a follower of Our Sentinel Sports You were united by Our Campus Activities We hefcb In the years to come we hope you will look at this annual often. We have tried to fill it with memories of glorious proms, thrilling football games, days filled with war work and studies, and the hundred little things that make up our high school life. This life would not exist if it were not for the students whose activities are the center of each day ' s happenings. So, for this reason, we, the staff, dedicate the 1943 Green and White to YOU. True Haneline! He wasn ' t with us long. Nine weeks after he assumed office, he was stricken with an illness which forced him to leave school. However, True Haneline had already established a record of service and comradeship seldom equalled at this institution. The principles for which he stood while president of the student body have been an inspiration for every Sentinel. Undefeated in Bay League, winning twelve in a row and losing but three games all year, the ' 43 edition of the Inglewood Sentinel baseball team showed true championship form despite the handicap of a small squad. Dick Bishop, three-year letterman, two-year All-Bay League pitcher, and most valuable man this season, capped an amazing high school record by winning eleven games, losing but two, and in the deciding game with Compton hurling a perfect no-hitter, the goal of all pitchers. Supporting Bishop were such men as Johnnie Gates, four-year letterman, last year ' s most valuable man, and an All-Bay Leaguer; co-captain Jack Green, the former water polo star, who in two seasons of baseball developed into an All-Bay League third baseman; and co-captain Jack Kirkland, powerhouse outfielder and All- Bay Leaguer. Behind this foursome was Eddie Hyduke, three-year letterman, who led the team in batting, runs batted in, and bases stolen; Lew Hastings, last year ' s batting champ and a three-year letterman; Darwin Horn, catcher par excellence; Roger Duitsman, outfielder de luxe; and Jerry Bell of football and basketball fame. Even with such a team as this, there should be someone to back them up, and Lefty Walker, pitcher, and Joe Butler, utility man, did the job. Coach Winslow is to be congratulated on the fine job he did in his first year here at Inglewood High — in fact the whole team is. NICE WORK, CHAMPS! Although he cannot be here until the war is over and peace is once more restored, he will always be an inspiration to the fellows who knew him. The fellows confided in him just as they did with fellow players. He wasn ' t just a man who gave them plays to execute, he was a fellow player. The team wanted to win for him. They knew that to win for him meant as much as Notre Dame ' s winning for Knute Rockne. As he sat there on the bench, he felt himself part of the game, and the players who were on the gridiron felt his presence — they could almost hear his comments and encouragements. He didn ' t just make friends with the members of the football squad, but with all the fellows. All over this great country, schools are losing coaches but few schools have made such a sacrifice to the war effort as giving up a man like Mr. Ernaga. So, Mr. Ernaga, friend of many, We, the Student Body of I. H. S., hope that while you ' re winning that bigger game with the Air Force sometime you ' ll think of us, because we ' ll be thinking of you. Play Day The twenty-fourth annual Play Day was held at Santa Monica High School on May 15 with Inglewood and Leuzinger as guests. Inglewood girls, for the first time in a num- ber of years, came marching home with the gold cup for first place in the Posture Parade, one of the main events of Play Day judged on appearance, posture, and marching ability. The gay and colorful theme, La Vida del Rancho, was carried out with everyone arriv- ing in jeans and plaid shirts, and with Saluta- ciones Amigas, Sports Rodeo, and La Fiesta time as the day ' s program.
