The pledge that Young America makes to the flag goes beyond the fluttering banner to that which it symbolizes — the vast nation which is today more than ever the best place in the world to live. And on the high school campuses of the United States there is a growing realization of the re- sponsibilities that go with the privilege of being Americans. For the theme of our 1941 yearbook, which is a pageant of the school year, we have chosen the actors themselves — oung America — the girls and boys who made the year what it was on Inglewood ' s campus. We hope that as you turn the pages of your Green and White you will remem- ber the accomplishments and the satisfactions, the friend- ships and the fun. of this chapter of your high school life. l jidjuoazion Because we feel that she has rendered invaluable services to Inglewood High School as faculty adviser of the annual and has proven an inspiration and guide to us and staffs in past years We, the Staff, dedicate the 1941 Green and White to Miss Beverly Smith I m 1 0tk r. t II .ft 1 m ...... li ' oi Iki per ( Twenty-five years ago. when Inglewood High School had two hundred fifty students and six- teen teachers and when everybody knew every- body else. Miss Stella Chappell, now Mrs. Sco- field. became a member of the faculty, as head of the English department. In addition to teach- ing English she went to all the football games, attended the school parties (most of which were held in the one gymnasium), and became the friend and adviser of a long line of students. During her first year she was faculty sponsor of the Green and hite. continuing this service through the publication of eleven regu- lar annuals and two literary editions. She helped to start El Centinela in 1922; and since there were no journalism classes and no time for such activities in school, she and the staff did most of their work in her home on Saturdays. Today Mrs. Scofield says. After my twenty- five years in Inglewood. I still think high school students are just about the finest people in the world — fully capable of making their genera- tion a better one than ours. And Inglewood students and alumni think that Mrs. Scofield is a fine teacher and a grand person. Miss Hazel Rose Lawrence Mrs. Stella Chappell Scofield Miss Hazel Rose Lawrence also joined the faculty of Inglewood High School in 1916. as the teacher of speech, dramatics, and girls ' physical education. Since that time the great majority of Inglewood ' s dramatic productions have been given under Miss Lawrence ' s expert supervision. Scores of amateur Thespians who have trod the boards of our stage have known her as a talented director, the best of good sports, and a valued friend. It would take volumes to tell all about the splendid work she has done at Inglewood. volumes that would be filled with little incidents of interest and humor that Miss Lawrence and her students remember. There was the night of the first play produced in our present auditorium. The last seat had finally been put into the newly built hall at five- thirty that afternoon. A short time before the opening curtain the new back-stage lights went out. and the make-up had to be applied by flashlight! But the volumes would also contain the stor- ies of lasting friendships and the sincere appre- ciation of many boys and girls who have known her, worked with her, and carried her influence with them as they left Inglewood High School. To them and to us she is a vital part of the school. Tfowno JJmmca MEHTORS Mr. Spaulding Mr. Fraser Mr. Anderson Mrs. Eades Dr. Forbes Ohubmuy TRUSTEES Frank E. Enrollment in the Adult Education Program for the year was over 8,000. of whom over 2.000 were enrolled in National Defense classes. There was a total of 168 classes, of which 45 were regular evening classes, 53 special day classes and 70 National Defense classes. Of the 76 teachers in Na- tional Defense 68 were either supervisors, foremen, or lead men from North American, Douglas, Northrop, Vultee, or Olmstead Stiles aircraft plants. National Defense classes are of two kinds: pre-employment, for persons eighteen years of age or older who are not employed or who wish to learn a trade necessary in the natiotial defense; and supplementary, classes open only to men and women who are already employed in aircraft or subsidiary factories. Over three hundred persons have received employment as a result of training in the pre-employment classes alone. An entire building at 548-570 Acacia Street in Hawthorne has been rented by the District and is used wholly for defense training. Classes are now operated from 9:00 A. M., through the day and all night until 7:00 A. M. All of the expense of national defense classes is paid from either Federal or State funds. I EVENING AND SPECIAL DAY CLASSES IN INGLE ' OOD. Placing Lawrence Trindl, George Sutton. Newell Oestreich, Earl Rydlek. and Bob Cadoo on the All-Bay League first team, the Sentinels rated more men on this selected squad than any other high school in the league. After winning over the strong Burbank and Alhambra teams the Sentinels went on to a loss to Long Beach Poly in a thrill-packed game. After the bitter taste of defeat the squad settled down and swamped its opponents in many surprising upsets. With neither team defeated in Bay League competition, Inglewood bumped up against a heavy and powerful Beverly Hills team, who took a hard and well fought game by the score of 18-6. This was the Sentinels ' only loss during the League season. Traveling to the border town of San Diego to play a post-season game, the Sentinels again prov ed to the border boys that Inglewood still had a team capable of winning out when the odds were against them. Li another post-season game the squad took Leuzinger into camp for the second time, to close a brilliant season. A great deal of credit should he given to Coaches Morrow. Badenoch, and Burley for the splendid way in which they handled the squad. Co-Captains Jewell Bunch and Andy Hyduke deserve a lot of the credit for the championship squad, as their spirit and teamwork made a success of a very good season. _s_Zi- VARSITY LETTERMEN Jewell Bunch and Andy Hyduke, Co-Captains; Ray Azar. By winning nine out of a possible eleven events, the squad added another victory to its long list when it copped the Inglewood Invitational Relays. The Sentinels failed by one point to win the Green-Badenoch trophy, as the B ' s and C ' s did not do so well in this meet. The locals also won the second division meet at Carpinteria by piling up fifty-two points, to their nearest opponent ' s ZS o. The Sentinels entered several men in the Southern California finals, and also Mar- vel, Peck, Southstone. and Perkins in the state meet, where Southstone and Peck placed. Marvel ' s leap of 6 feet 2 inches in an early season meet set a new school record in the high jump, while Peck set a new standard of 22 feet 2% inches in the broad jump. eleven etor ' to ?le« ' ooil s (ailed Jinocl 1 not do llsO HOB iteria h ■nearest aiDtle so Mar- s in tlie id es iji an d record 1 a new in tiie VARSITY LETTERMEN Bob Bastian.
