M.. - -- Tay in .if-Al Q 'iriff' D ,W ff-sf'-'3,. aff.. . -X .. , .-QI ' 1' 'A Y- -fa5rs ':a- an 4,52-.J-3-M , fl' . ,. . ,, . . , 5, A l5.. b lllkggu Jys, -K .s e.. , - , nun- iglifl sg, Jf.4, 6 Jfn' - .1 Wil :,2.-H' USS INGERSOLL IDD 9901 is the twenty eighth of the 30 ship SPRUANCE class destroyer program developed to maintain Americas naval strength for the foreseeable future The entire SPRAUNCE class has been designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Dlvlslon of Lltton Industries in Pascagoula Mississippi Homeported In San Die o INGERSOLL will be assigend to Destroyer Squadron Nlne and ruiser Destroyer Group Five INGERSOLL is a versatile multi mission ship fully able to operate with equal effectiveness alone or with large carrier task forces She is also an outstanding platform for shore bombardment along with being capable of acting in support of diverse tasks from amphibious assaults to blockades as well as all other traditional destroyer roles INGERSOLL was designed primarily for antisubmar ine warfare and has the most advanced underwater detection and flre control systems yet developed She was built for quiet operation to ensure accomplishment of this primary mission with maximum effectiveness She is a large ship tmore than twice as large as a World War ll destroyerl and as such can carry a formidable array of weapons and electronic equipment long distances at high speeds. Built with future growth in mind INGERSOLL's design is modular in nature allowing for easy installation of entire subsystems within the ship. Space and power reservations have been made to accommodate future weapons and electronics systems as they are developed. This design feature will allow INGERSOLL to adapt as new military technology evolves. Crew comton and habitability were also of prime consideration in lNGERSOLL's design. Berthing areas are very spacious compared to earlier destroyers and the ship is equipped with features uncommon to most of its predecessors. A ships library crews lounge a well-equipped gymnasium hobby shop and other items have been added to enhance crew comfort. Commanding Officer CDR E. R. Fickenscher lll Commander Fickenscher was commissioned from the United States Naval Academy in 1965. He has served at sea as Damage Control Assistant in USS MORTON QDD-948l, Operations Officer and Weapons Officer in USS FORREST SHERMAN QDD-9311 and as Executive Officer in USS COURTNEY QDE-1021i and USS RAMSEY QFFG-2l. He has served ashore in the Command and Policy Branch COP-6023 of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Plans and Policy COP-06l, and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal during this tour. His most recent tour was as Head, Surface Lieutenant Commander Assignment Section, Naval Military Personnel Command. Commander Fickenscher holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administra- tion.
