The keel of USS INGERSOLL was laid on February 18, 1943 at the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, and she was formally launched on june 28, 1943. She was named in honor of one of the great American Naval families and specifically as a tribute to two valiant Naval Dfficers, Rear Admiral Royal Rodney Ingersoll who served in the Civil War, the Spanish American War and World War I and his grandson, Lieutenant Royal Rodney Ingersoll II, who was killed in action aboard USS HORNET during the Battle of Midway. Following commissioning on August 31, 1943, 1NGERSOLL's first duty was to serve as flagship for Admiral Ingersoll on his inspection trip of the Atlantic Fleet. joining the Pacific Fleet in january 1944, INGERSOLL was present at nearly all major Pacific Campaigns and was part of the great United States Armada in Tokyo Bay for the japanese surrender. During the war she earned nine engagement stars and was credited with three sure kills and four assists against enemy aircraft, an enemy destroyer sunk, and numerous rescue missions saving more than 100 lives. Following the conclusion of World War II, INGERSOLL was decommissioned in 1947. Five years later in 1952, INGERSOLL was re-commissioned and earned five engagement stars while participating in the closing phases of the Korean War. In December 1954, INGERSOLL in company with Destroyer Division 18 was trans- ferred from the U.S . Atlantic Fleet to the U.S . Pacific Fleet. Arriving in San Diego she became a member of the reactivated Destroyer Squadron TWENTY ONE to which she is still attached. Since 1954, INGERSOLL has made 10 deployments to the West- ern Pacific as a unit of the powerful U.S . Seventh Fleet. Her performance in peace- time was recognized in fiscal years 1959 and 1960 when she was awarded the Battle Efficiency E for Destroyer Squadron TWENTY CNE. She was awarded a Gold E with two hash marks in 1964 for seven consecutive years of excellence in surface gun- nery. Special awards received during 1966 included the Armed Service Expeditionary Medal for service in the Quemoy-Matsu area of operations during 1958, and a second award on the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. INGERSOLL's last two deployments have found her involved in special operations off the coast of Viemam conducting surveillance, shore bombardment, anti-shipping, interdiction and fast 'carrier strike operations as a unit of-the Seventh Fleet.
