He attended the University of Michi- gan and holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree from Yale University. In addition, he has attended U.S . Naval General Line School, Guided Missile School, Fort Bliss, Texas, and the U.S. Postgraduate School, Monterey. Upon graduation from college in 1945, he was commissioned an Ensign in the naval reserve and he augmented in the Navy in 1947. He served in the engineering departments of USS QUEENS CAPA 1035, USS TACONIC CAGC 175, USS IARVIS QDD 7995 and as Engineer Officer of USS DAMATO CDDE 8715. In july 1950, a tour in USS GHERADY CDMS 305 as Mine Warfare Officer was cut short by the Korean War. He placed USS PIRATE QAM 2755 back in com- mission as Executive Officer. This tour ended in 58 days when PIRATE was lost in mine sweeping opera- tions in Wonson Harbor, Korea. CDR DAVIES received the Silver Star Medal for his actions in assisting his crew and that of PLEDGE which was mined shortly after PIRATE . The ship received the Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Korean War. After attending Guided Missile School, he served in turn as Training Officer, Executive Officer, and Commanding Officer of the Navy's then new Guided Missile School in Pomona, California. His next tour of duty was Assistant for Surface to Air Missiles on the Staff of Commander Operational Development Force Know COMOPTEV- FOR5. Here he was project officer during the evaluation of the first operations missile ships, USS BOSTON QCAG 15, USS CANBERRA CCAG 25, USS GYATT QDDG 15 and USS GALVESTON QCAG 35. This was followed by tours in GALVESTON and in USS TOPEKA QCAG 85 as Missile Officer. Upon completing a one year course at Monterey, CDR DAVIES spent 2 years at the U.S . Naval Academy as an administrator and an instruc- tor in the Weapons Department. From there he reported as Weapons Officer in USS OKLAHOMA CITY CCLG 55, 7th Fleet Flagship. Commander DAVIES spent many days at sea while INGERSOLL participated in many exercises, a midshipman cruise, and in combat off the coast of North Vietnam. He was relieved by Commander james J. STROHM, USN, on 21 December 1966 while INGERSOLL was underway on special operations in WESTPAC. That same day he was promoted to the rank of Captain. - W . . -,..-... FIRST TWO OF THREE Commander Stuart M. BROWNELL Commander BROWNELL is a veteran of over 20 years naval service, dating to 1944 when he was a member of the wartime V-12 program. An NROTC graduate of Penn State University in 1948, CDR BROWNELL spent his first seagoing years aboard the USS NANTAHALA CAO 601, as Damage Control As- sistant, and the USS ALBANY CCAC 101 in the Elec- tronics Section. In 1952 CDR BROWNELL assumed command of the USS HARKNESS CMHC 125 where he remained tm- til being relieved, reporting for instruction at the Navy Post Graduate School, Monterey, California, in 1955. At Monterey, CDR BROWNELL received a Master's degree in physics while studying Mine War- fare. His next six years were spent in Pearl Harbor, first as Executive Officer of the USS TAYLOR CDD 4685 and then as a member of Commander In Chief, Pacific Staff. While attached to CINCPAC's Staff, he was an Operations Programming Analyst and was instrumental in developing Command and Control procedures in com- puter programming. CDR BROWNELL received the joint Commendation Medal for his work in this field. Immediately prior to coming to INGERSOLL, CDR BROWNELL was a student at the Naval War College. CDR BROWNELL took INGERSOLL to WESTPAC as a unit of the Seventh Fleet from june 1965 to November 1965. Having completed a successful tour as CO, INGER- SOLL, he was relieved by Commander Henry E. DAVIES, jr., on 28 February 1966 and proceeded to Washington, D.C. for his next duty assignment. 4

STROI-IM Commander, USN Commanding Officer Commander STROHM graduated from the Naval Academy in june 1951, and was subsequently ordered to USS NOBLE QAPA 2181 for duty. Serving in NOBLE for three years, Commander STROHM successively held billets as Gunnery Officer, Communi- cations Officer, and First Lieutenant. While attached to NOBLE he participated in several large scale amphibious operations during the Korean War, and he spent a total of 14 months in and about Korea from june 1951 until july 1953. Commander STROHM's next assignment was also at sea, this time as Weapons Of- ficer of USS FLETCHER QDD 4455. While attached to FLETCHER, he participated in the TACHIN islands evacuation and numerous fleet and inter-type exercises . Following his first sea tours, Commander STROHM was ordered to the Service Schools Command at Creat Lakes, Illinois, where he served as Curriculum Depart- ment Head, Gunnery O1'ficer's School from july 1956 until june 1958. Subsequent to this assignment, Commander STROHM returned to sea as Executive Officer of USS EDMONDS CDE 4065 and, as such, he participated in the Quemoy Crisis operations of 1958. His next assignment took him ashore again, where in july 1960, he reported to the Superintendent of the U.S . Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California for duty under instruction in the Weapons Engineering curriculum and he graduated in june 1962 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His postgraduate education completed, Commander STROHM was ordered to USS CONQUEST CMSO -1881 for duty as Commanding Officer and he so served until Decem- ber 196-1. Following this assignment, he was ordered to the staff of the Commander of the U.S. Naval Air Forces, Pacific, in San Diego, where he served from january 1965 until November 1966, as a staff member in the Ship's Material Section. He assumed command of INCERSOLL on 21 December 1966. Commander STROHM is married to the former Betty R.
