N 'Ala W' VARSITY BASEBALL Under the leadership of new head baseball coach, Gil Mar- rujo, and the new assistant coach Rick Holman, the 1977 Indio High School Varsity Baseball team had an outstanding season. With six returning lettermen, Richard Bruner, Doug Holliday, lim Wolff, Vin Rover, Randy Mesa, Bobby Thomas, and Gary Willis, the team showed remarkable tal- ent. Behind the fine pitching of Bruner and Mesa, V the team expected to take the DVL Crown with ease. The 3-3 early season record was improved with the late arrival basketball players, Robert Hernandez, Gary Willis, and Mike Morris. The ball club was mostly a senior club this year, but the coaches are expecting to have a good season again next year with the talented players moving up from JV and Frosh-Soph teams. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Girls' Basketball Teams faced a tough season this year. Most teams were very tall which proved to be a difficult task for Indio to handle since the average height was only 5'5 on our teams. This was a building season for the basketball team as half the team was new, young and inexperi- enced in game play. In two or three years, the team should be strong, experienced, and have good height. The highlight of the season was the accomplishments at the Impe- rial Varsity Tournament. After a loss to Palo Verde and a win over Calipatria, the Varsity defeated CV for the Consolation Champi- onship. The JV team had a successful season, proving to be among the stronger teams in the league. The JV team had good height and a lot of hustle. Under the fine coaching of Liz Chapman, the basketball program for girls should be very successful in the coming years. Aihlefics 167
