June, 19335 THE FACULTY Dedication A To Miss Elizabeth Lowden and Miss Adelaide Phelps, who are retiring from teaching this term, we affectionately dedicate this issue of the Echo. Thousands of Indianola boys and girls have been enriched by the influence of these two char- acters, and they will always remain in the hearts of lndianolans. May they carry with them a belief in the good-will, tenderness, and deep appreciation extended by the school whose inter- ests they have shared for many years. Our sin- cerest wish is that Miss Lowden andl Miss Phelps, who are rich in scholarship, vigorous of person- ality, deepened by varied experiences of life, will enjoy the opportunities and pleasures of leisure hours. We know that in these hours they will continue to be of service to others for that quality is embedded in their personalities. May they look back over their years at Indianola with happy thoughts and satisfaction in their achieve- ments, and may they look forward to years of contentment, real joy, and the fulfillment of their most cherished desires. Miss Lowden and Miss Phelps, Indianolans say to you, Good-bye, good luck, and God bless you.', W-. 'I The lmdielmele Creed By H. F. VALLANCE I believe -in Indiarnolai school as a school of high ideals, of noble purpose, and of joyous, wholesome lifeg a school -where the importance of teaching and learning 'is recognized, but where the 'i-nterests of child- hood and youth are pa-ramou'n,tg a school that stands for thoughtful, earnest work and strenuous, eager play, a school that promotes industry, honesty, kindliness, courtesy-every manly and womanly 'virtueg a school which 'insists that true worth rests upon. excellence of character rather than upon breadth of knowledge or depth of purse, and that school is not only preparation for life, but that school is, life. I therefore believe it 'ls my duty to 'rnyl school to love it, to honor it, to respect its authority, to protect and defend its fair name, to act so as never to bring dfiscredit or reproach upon it, and to show 'myself at all times worthy of the advantages and opportunities which my school afords. fAck'n.owledg'ments to the Americavfs Creed.j The llmdiemele Meitilze Courteous Man-ner, Proper Speech, Honest Endeavor. A WORD OF APPRECIATION In the time we have been at India-nola we hare seen 'it change grcatlyg perhaps not in reality bat in our miiwl's eye. During our first days here we were overawed by its dignity, imposing look, and size. But as the days and months have passed, it has been transjfoff'rn.ed into, as home, where many delightful friendships have been formed, a place where we learn and advance, a scene of many good times. Tak-ing all these things, and many others, into consideration, we now wish to show our appreciation and to express our thanks to, first, ani' parents. They are the ones who hdiie'...b'deked all of our chances and opportuvlitfies offered us through the school. Thegfldre the ones who have made possible our schools, and .oar chances to attend them. They have helped as in our difficul- tielt, cheered us when. we were discouraged, and enjoyed with ns our triumphs. So to them, we wish to express our heartfelt grat- itude. Next, we wish to thank the faculty and the other members of Indianola. as well as the school itself, for the fine help, advice and constructive criticism which has been given ns. Without the aid of these agencies we could not have become what we are. The faculty especially has helped -us. They have tried to understand our problems, such as they were, and have helped ns w-ith them greatly. We hope that, later in life, we shall be able to reflect some, if not a great deal, of the care and training which the faculty has given ns. For all of Indianola and its ideals, we wish to express our grat- itnde. At Indianola, we believe, we have enjoyed three of the most pleasant years in our lives. It has become a home to as, and needless to sail, we can scarcely leave it witho-at some feeling of regret. However, we look forward to the future with antici- pation and hope to enjoy it as we have the immecliate past. We now mast leave, and although words fall far short of expressing our thanks, we hope that each and every one concerned will realize how deeply rooted and how genuine our appreciation is. We will always re- member you, Indianola, as one of the bright- est spots on. our calendar of life. -Bill Livingston, President of 9A Class. 4 CLASS OFFICERS It has been with great pride, pleasure. and wisdom, that the 9A Class has elected William Livingston, Anna Jane Bierstedt, William Clifford, and Harold Davis aS its officers. William Livingston. the president, is prominent for his ability in dramatics. and for his diligence and justice while serv- ing as the judge of the Traflic Court. Anna Jane Bierstedt, elected to the vice-presi- dency, is also an enthusiastic member of organizations in music and dramatics, be- sides being the spirited leader of our Stu- dent Council. William Clifford and Harold Davis, chosen secretary and treasurer re- spectively, are both famous for .their accom- plishments in athletics. Bill has been a mr-mber of the basketball, baseball, and swimming teams, and Harold. a member of the tumbling team. Harold is a new mem- ber of the orchestra. These officers during their brief term have shown willingness and dependability in the execution of their duties, and we wish to express our deep gratitude and sin- cere appreciation for their efforts. FAREWELLS AND THEIR MEANINGS The baby's farewell is usually the words bye, bye, which are uttered with a nod of a wobbly head and the waving of a pudgey fist. The baby may utter these words to show that he or she can do it and really not mean a thing. The small boy's or girl's farewell is one which is filled with enthusiasm, earnest- ness, and sincerity. In saying good bye it is often repeated while both hands are being waved wildly in the air. Long after the visitor is out of sight the child lingers in his farewell. The high school pupil's good bye is often brief, such as So Long! See you soon. Their farewell is expressed with no form- ality, but with earnestness and sincerity. The middle-aged person expresses his farewell with much formality and some- times not much sincerity. Mrs. So and So might say to another woman, Good bye. Come and see me soon. while she really hopes it will not be too soon. The farewell at life s end is filled with a deep affection which is speechless, for no words can express the last farewell. Ours to you 9A's is- Good bye and Good Luck. This farewell contains no formality, but is filled with sincerity and affection. May you carry on at high school as you have at Indianola. When you leave, take with you Indianola's motto, Courteous Manners. Proper Speech. and Honest En- deavor. -Virginia Jaycox. VESPER. CLASS POEM When. I go back through the years, Fond memorikas of things I'll recall: I suddenly find my eyes full of tears, To think that I'm leaving it all. Leaving the school I ve held so dear, Taking my last goodbye: Th-is school to my heart has been very near And now I shed a tear and a sigh. In my mind each class of the day I'll go through over and over again: They'll ente-r, la-ugh, and then pass away Through my heart they'll send a pain. But on into the world I 'must go -To seek more happiness, Find tasks in store for me, and so Try to make my life a. success. We received our diplomas, we're away from school, i But friends we've left behind We were the fire and they were the fuel, Truer friends you could not find. Au revoir, the French say it so, Adios, the Spanulrds hail thus, The English, Pip, pip, and cheerio, But Goodbye is good enough for us. -Martha Cohagen. NAME Howard Achey ......... ...... Song Composer STYLES On fhe first of May of ihis year, There was a. style parade, At Ind mzola Jasnior High, Of dresses the girls had made. Slyfes quaint and styles new, Of all designs and sizes, Some were red, greevz, or blue, And there were some that sur- prised us. Some had a pocket here and there, A-nd some had a pretty bow, But the thing that is surprising is, They were 'made by girls learn-ing to sew. -Betty Major, 8A I i 2 4 , 1 H. M. S. PINAFORE H. M. S. Pinafore-Ah. 'Twas a grand musical comedy that only the genius of Gilbert and Sullivan could create by their excellent team- work, Now read on! Due to the fact that Gilbert and Sullivan decided never to publish the orchestrations because they had no copyright protection, they put them in a vault in a London bank ftheir present locationl. Thus, many times the orchestrations used in the operas were very shoddy and shabby. They were not the real thing. Recently, the D'Oyle Carte Company came to New York City and gave several of Gilbert and Sullivan's operas. This company had hand-written copies of the scores, taken from the vault manuscripts. They presented The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yoeman of the Guard, Pi-nafore, The Govwloliers, and others exactly as they were originally produced. In this way the Gilbert and Sullivan operas have been re-born and an increased interest in them is rapidly sweeping the country. No longer will the public put up with the shoddy orchestra- tions. They want the Gilbert and Sullivan musical comedies presented as in the Savoy Theatre days where the operas were produced in Gilbert and Sullivan's own time. Now to continue with my story. Indianola Junior High is not content to present any show unless it is one of the very best. Con- sequently-Hi M. S. Pinafore, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most suc- cessful creations, was chosen by Miss Ross and her music department. This operetta was presented with a true Gilbert and Sullivan air- a light, breezy, and delicate musical comedy that was not only refresh- ing, but very amusing. X This operetta' sometimes called The Lass Who Loved a Sailor, is a typical Shiver-my-timbers yarn of the sea and tars of the British Navy. It also pokes fun at the British method of appointing a civilian as ruler of the Queen's Navie, who has worked up to this position by washing windows, cleaning floors, and polishing up the handle on the big front door. Now, last but not least, we must give our most excellent cast a big hand. On the opposite page are pictures of the participants in their costumes. In the portholes are snaps of the girls who were in the Sister's, Cousin's, and Aunt's Chorus-oh! They were saucy maidens -those girls who chimed in with We are his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts, to Beecher Thornton's queries. By the way, Beecher Thornton was cast as the high and mighty admiral, Sir Joseph Porter. K. C. B.g Janice Merrill. the Indianola Catbird QI read recently that the catbircl was way ahead of the Nightingale as far as song was concernedj received the part of Josephine, the Captain's daughter. and one side of the love interest in the operetta. while Byron Corbin filled the role of Captain Corcoran. Doris Toothaker made a tremendous hit as Butter- cup and Willis Wardlow, the sailor, was the other side .of the love affair. He is seen on the upper deck with the most charming villain, Dick Deadeye, better known as Bob Starbuck, and on the main deck Captain Corcoran and Littlel Buttercup are having a tete-a-tete. In the lower picture a snap of the whole group is seen. It was snapped by Miss Kyle, the Indianola photographer. after the performance. -Judith Zemer. 1 4 F ' Hi? ll Were King May twenty-fourth and all is still, The minds of our audience with beauty we fill, As gracious Katherine, The Rose of the play, CJanice Merrill has her part to sayb Comes on the stage all hearts to hold Leading Francois that Jack Yankee bold. I Himdliaimolla Day One of the most beautiful and impressive occasions of the school year is Indianola Day which occurs every spring. The crowning of Indianola's May Queen and the pageant for her pleasure take place in the beautiful hollow at the east end of the school grounds. A pro- cessional including' the queen and her court, and the dances begin the ceremony. The queen is crowned by either a Hower girl or one of her attendants. This act signifies that this girl has been chosen by the student body of Indianola as the most representative 9-A girl. This year the queen and her court consisted of Anna Jane Bier- stedt, Jane Ann DeLong, Janice Rosalind Merrill, Eleanor Jeanne Tracy, and Mary Virginia White. After the crowning of the queen, came the dances. One of the most lovely was a solo scarf dance given by Arwilla Crawford. As you remember, this dance was used as a special feature in the class play. But-did you know that the dance was not only supervised but created by Miss Schmidt? Among the other dances which were supervised by Miss Schmidt, were the Balloon Dance, Dixie Dance, Maypole Dance, and the Highland Fling. When the outdoor procedures were over, the spectators returned to the building to view the exhibits. patronize the sales and movies, and to dance in the cafeteria. Thus ended the most significant and the most anticipated event of the whole year. It was, I believe, a bit sad for the 9-A's because it marked their exit from Indianola-an exit by no means happy. Al- though we have great aspirations and ambitions for the future, we shall always look back on Indianola as the treasure-house of our hap- piest memories. -Helen Louise Jenkins, 9-A. a 1 I 1 I J INDIANS DBFIEATED 5-2 A KFranklin administered the first defeat of the season to Indianola by the score of 6 to 2. In the first inning Reedy of Franklin with two men on, hit the first ball pitched over the left field fence, but fate intervened and the ball curved foul. In the last of the seventh Indianola had the bases loaded with but o'ne out. It ended with two more strikeouts credited to the Franklin pitcher, thus ending the ball game. I...- Paul Elleman who plays shortstop for In- dianola was out of the last two games due to an infected thumb. Indianola placed third in the city-wide gym meet with Pilgrim and Crestview fin- ishing ahead. ' 1, Indianola was victorious over Champion in the first game of the season, handing them a 14 to 2 setback. Brown, pitcher for Indianola, was in rare form allowing three scattered hits and strik- ing out 7 batters, Williams, rival pitcher, sent 9 men back to the bench via the strike out route but walked 8 batters to Brown's four. Another feature of the game was the hitting of Paul Elleman, stellar short stop who hit the pellet for a triple, double and two singles in five times at bat. This .was a free walking game as each pitcher issued 11, free trips to first which figured greatly in the scoring. Jim- my -Wilson, catcher for Indianola, led both teams in hitting by getting 3 singles out oflfour trips to the plate. Editor's Note: Although baseball is played, today. by practically every red blooded boy in Amer- ica, very few of its participants know any- thing of its origin. It is for the purpose of acquainting our .readers with the interesting history of our national sport that this ar- ticle is printed. Q The origin, of. baseball is generally cred- ited to one ofhtwo sources. Number one is a game of : rounders , played by our col- onial forefathers. -Source number two is a certain Abner Doubleday who in 1839 formedvthe .first rules. The-first' town ball club to be organized was the Olympic Town Ball Club of Phila- delphia organized ini 1833. However -this team played a game which little resembled our scientific game of today.. Clubs of New York and Brooklyn, who played in 1843, are considered to have met in the first matches between organized teams. These teams played with a ball much larger than the modern one and the pitchers pitched with an underhand move- ment. In spite of the fact that baseball or at least versions of it, had been played for many years, it was not until after the Civil War that the game really became popular. During this war the game was taught to thous-ands of boy soldiers, who played dur- ing their leisurei time. In this way' baseball was introduced to many communities all over the country. The old Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first team to have a complete profes- sional roster. The team was organized in 1868. Eight years later the National League came into existence with a club membership of eight teams. In 1882 the American Association was formed and these leagues were rivals for many years. It was not until 1900, however, that the present big leagues, the American, and Na- tional, were placed on their present basis. Since the existence of baseball it has spread considerably. It is played in Can- ada, Cuba andwas introduced in the Phil- ippines by William H. Taft. Several South American cities have teams and since the world tour of baseball stars the game is very popular in Japan. It has been predicted, that barring swim- ming. it will probably become the world's most extensively played game. T0 OUR PHOTOGRAPHER We wish to express our appreciation to Miss Kyle, who has given up much of her valuable time to accommodate the Echo in taking pictures of various activities of the school. The different snaps she has taken for numerous Echoesphave served to make them more attractive and enjoyable. We thank you, Miss Kyle, for your splendid work. Miss Abernethy mounted the pages of snaps and the Echo Staff appreciates her kindness and artistic work. Mr. Parkinson saw to the mounting of the 9A pictures and the 9A's thank him for his help in forwarding their little memory book. SPEAKERS FOR G. A. R. Bill Livingston and Janice Merrill, In- our dianola graduates, will represent school at a G. A. R. convention on the afternoon of June 15. Bill will speak o.n The Public Schools and Patriotism, the meeting being of a patriotic nature. Citizenship and the Schools will be Janice's topic. For the services of these pupils the school will receive a beautiful silk Amer- ican flag. QContinued from page 225 NAME ACTIVITIES AMBITION Loma Yeamans ........ ........ Student Leadership Activities have greatly improved in efficiency and organization. Below is a summary of what the different groups have initiated and accomplished. . This semester Indianola Student Council has enjoyed one of its most active years since its organization in 1926 at the old building. The paper sale, which poured about S71 into the coffers of the school, was originated and sponsored by the Council. Generous awards were given to spur the pupils to bring large amounts of paper. Earlier in the year a committee, appointed by the president, sold candy and popcorn- balls at the basketball games and the va- rious evening performances. Lately the Council has been contemplat- ing, accepting and approving a constitution which is a revision of the original. V The Council has been exceedingly fortu- nate in having such capable oiiicers as Anna Jane Bierstedt, Richard Ridgely and Helen Jenkins, who hold the positions of president, vice-president and secretary, respe:tively. A plan of stamping all articles handed in has been adopted by the Lost and Found Department. When the stamp appears twice in the same book the owner is ques- tioned and sometimes punished for careless- ness. Thus this system greatly reduces the number of lost articles. The School Beautiful Club. an activity comparatively new at Indianola, has greatly improved its organization over that of its first year. By means of charts, posted by the members of this club for their respective homeroom. the pupils are constantly re- minded to be more careful in the depositing of waste paper. The Hall Monitors, this year, have done a fine service to the school in aiding in the suppression of noise. This group has as its student leader Stephen Bailey. They meet every second Monday. Our all 9A governing group , the Traffic Commission, has been doing its duty this semester during the lunch periods and in the halls between classes. This is one of the smallest groups of pupils ever holding this position. Lewis Rankin is the director of the Traffic Commission, assisted by Bill Livingston and Janice Merrill. Meetings held every Tuesday. The Student Court. Bill Livingston and his assistants, have been most faithful. This is one of the finest courts that Indianola has ever had. This group has done much for the maintenance of order, trying and punishing those not abiding withirrhe law All those who have appeared before the court have been dealt with fairly. Evelyn Fay Keller, who won the S. A. R. Essay Contest for the 8A girls, won a name for herself and brought honor to Indian- ola by winning the city-wide championship. The award is a bronze medal presented by the Sons of the American Revolution. Alwen Wallace was the 8A boy winner at Indian- ola. Evelyn's essay follows: TO SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY Congress shall make no law establishing religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof 3 or abridging the freedom of speech or of the pressg or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances. The colonies, under the rule of England, were denied all of the above privileges. This new government by the people pro- posed to make sure that all these rights should belong to people then living and to their posterity. Therefore, they incorpo- rated them into the Constitution of the United States in the so-called Bill of Rights which guarantees to each and every one of us the right to freedom of worship and permits us to. discuss in open meeting the affairs of the government, criticising those public officials whom we feel are in error. The freedom of the press also comes un- der this clause of the Constitution. It al lows newspaper and magazine editors and other citizens to publish discussions of all subjects bearing upon our government. The influence of the press in molding public opinion was illustrated during the admin- istration of President Wilson. He greatly favored the United States' entry into the League of Nations but the press through- out the country so strongly opposed this, that Congress was infiuenced to decide against our entry. At the present time, certain phases of the New Deal are finding great disfavor with the press and with the general public. These phases are being dis- cussed- over the radio and in the press, and in the near future no doubt, the Recovery Program will undergo certain changes. With many European countries under dic- tators who do not hesitate to destroy any citizen who raises his voice against their rule,-we are indeed grateful to the Fath- ers of our Constitution for including in the Preamble, the clause, To secure the Bles- sings of Liberty, which makes it possible for us to have a truly democratic form of government.
