Visitors were greeted by high school students who spoke only foreign language. Breads of the countrieseStollen, fruit bread, Roman and French breads, and pastries, were on sale in the language rooms. In the cafeteria each group sponsored a booth at which foods were sold typical of the culture studied. Songs of the various countries were sung by groups of French, German, Spanish, and Latin students strolling about the food fair as visitors ate their French beignets, fish morsels, Worst, tortillas, and other tasty foods. Puppet shows, music, an art exhibit of modern European prints from the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. BLAZEK Finishing the season with a 26-14 Victory over the arch-rival Winterset Huskies, the t' Indians became only the second team in Indianola history to finish with an unblemished 4 9-0-0 record and the first to rise to 10th in the state ranking. The eleven seniors left behind a 25-1-1 three year recorquuite a goal for future Indian gridders to equal. The IndiansT hard-hitting offense. ranked 4th in the state and 3rd in total plays. ac- counted for 49 touchdowns and 3,079 total yards. The Indians hustled and scrambled their way to a 16-5 season,s record, and pulled one of the upsets 0f the year by defeating 6th ranked Ankeny 56-44. As the Des Moines Tribune headline stated, LLAnkeny Scalped by an Indian War Party? For the second straight year, Gordon Netley and Phil Butler were named to all- conference honors, while Dennis Allsup was named to the second team, and Dave Peterson received honorable mention. The team had the finest defensive average in the conference, and possibly in school history, averaging 40 points a game. The sophomore basketball team won the conference title for the third straight year. Coach StarrLs Little Indians compiled a 16-0 record and led their conference in both offense and defense. Led by Steve Carter, medalist in the conference and district meets, they boasted a 6-2 dual meet record, losing only twice to Valley, while beating Winterset, Knoxville, and Tech of Des Moines twice each. We beat Ankeny in an upset, 40-12. With such a boom- ing beginning to the season, we hope the boys keep rolling. 17-Today was the first day we typed with type- writers, but at least we saved the floors from being pitted. 21eWe all went over to Pella to see the Indians skunk the Dutchmen, 26-9. 28-We scared the Panthers back home to their jungle at Knoxville with a Victory for us, 28-7. Tonight was also our first soc hop, sponsored by the Youth Projects Committee. Tonyls jeep came to the rescue of the football boys when the fire truck was called to duty during the parade. During the half-time of the game Jan Heilman was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1962. There might have been some doubt about our winning but not after the kick-off that sent Allsup all the way for a touchdown. We tromped lem 41-13! 3:Today many of the boys took the Airmenls Qualifying Exams. 5eTonight was the dress rehearal for the Junior Class Play. Mr. Wisdom broke his record- he never walked out on the cast once. BeEverybody loved ttThe Cannibal Queen? A catastrophe almost hit the second night when one of the leading characters got the flu. Mike McKee prepared to take over for Mike Sorden by memorizing 87 lines in one day, but Mike was able to appear for his performance. QeAn expected crowd of over 6,000 fans was cramped into the bleachers for the game be- tween Winterset and the Indians to decide who would be the South Central Conference Champs. Oh, you guys, I gained five pounds! 23-The Indians played their first basketball game tonight against the Oskaloosa Indians. The boys were a little rusty; it was a heartbreaking game that ended in defeat with a score of 42-39. 27-The Indians played their first conference game against Winterset Huskies. It was a thriller that ended in victory for the Indians after two over- times! The score was 37-34. 30;The Indians celebrated their second victory when they ran over the Valley Tigers, 42-27. tOur congratulations go to Bill Howard for his excellent display of skill in basketball during the last two minutes of playh DECEMBER 34Mrs. Schallls literature classes are putting on Macbeth and today was the opening of the mag- nificent production, directed by Salome herself. The final score was 54-46 and the only thing that the Indians took home was a drumstick that was affectionately given to them by the nicest drummer boy! 18-The Y-Teen girls bundled up in warmest clothes to go out caroling tonight. 19-Many parents and students enjoyed seeing the annual Christmas program tonight. Some tired and weary people staggered into classes today. 54We played Knoxville on our home court and the boys added another victory to their ex- cellent record in the conference, 55-44. 11h0ur boys were determined to scalp the Huskies as we all set out for Winterset. They didnlt disappoint us when the score ended 41-35 tin our favor, of courseh. Mrs. Schall couldnlt recollect how many corners there were to Indianola on the way home. 174The seniors all found themselves at the lake to- night for the senior class sliding party. There was more than one catastrophe when Gordon lost his shirt on the taboggan and Jan tried to help in the kitchen. Anyway, we are sure that everybody had a good time-frozen fingers and all. 18-The Valley Tigers came down to Indianola only to get tromped, 41-31. Ql'Semester tests all week-something most of us would rather not recall! 254We beat Osceola, 65-39. 30-Report cards again-and a lot of disappointed faces. Oh, well, well do better next semester. FEBRUARY 1-Our boys were charged up for a game with Pella tonight. They wanted to wipe out the humiliat- ing defeat of their first game with the Dutch- men. The Indians outplayed them to the disap- pointment of their enthusiastic crowd and some- what excitable coach; the final score showed 46-33. 8-Sn0w cancelled the girls pep bus trip to Albia for one of the final basketball games of the season. The same thing happened last yearabut we got snow vacation then! They sure werenlt beating their tom-toms when they came home with a 56- 46 loss, especially since this put us in second in the conference. Naturally, because the girls werenlt there, the boys couldnlt play their best. 5;Twenty-five chosen seniors went to Des Moines for a government enrichment prograrn With Harry. It seems that some of the girls got panicky about lunch and made record-breakmg time from KRNT Theater to Babels. 11-This starts the week of district wrestling. Keep up the good work, boys. 12-Chariton came here but their success was unseen because our determined Indians scattered their scalps on the court with a Victory of 39-29. 13-Evervone dressed up for the Heart Sis Banquet tonight. Pam Yatels humorous reading and Paula Pegramls violin solo were emoyed by all. The high spot of the evening came when everyone received her gift and found out who her Heart Sis wast Lynn Williams got something black, but we never did get to see what it was. 14-Happy Valentines Day. One of the teachers is 77 .V 9PM '- -' Isrwqua; --...-..q...7,x , y i - w. y-m- 4;. still offering her knife to cut a heart-sis cake- she prefers chocolate. 154We played Knoxville and their itfairi7 team7 re- cently pulling itself over the hump, had the Indians scared. Things were looking pretty jumpy with only a few seconds left and the score tied, but the Indians took the lead to a final Victory and had the assurance of being confer- ence champs. The final score was 49-45. 16-Even though the Valentineis Dance wasnit over- populated, the decorations and music were en- joyed by those present. The evening ended with the crowning of Queen J oyce and King Gordy. 174Bill Howard accidentally CU knocked over Coach Parkinsi mailbox but it didnit prove to be too embarassing; he got a little experience in building a new one. 18-This week began the boys sectional basketball tournaments at Ankeny. We beat the Saydel team again, 51-26, but we face Ankeny, sixth team in the state, Thursday night. Weive all got our fingers crossed. Sue got all tired out from yelling, iiYea, 52W 18-194G. R. A. tournaments were held the last two nights. The seniors proved their skill by running over the juniors and sophomores and winning the gold cup and the right to go out and eat on the G. R. A. budget. 197-Competition was keen between the foreign lan- guage classes this week as they made their final preparations for Foreign Language Night. 214Much of the town traveled to Ankeny to back the team tonight for the biggest game of all. Both teams were up for the game and both schools had enthusiastic crowds; the noise was unbelievable. Where Ankeny had the physical strength and ability to overpower our team, the Indians had the spirit and heart to make a victory for Indianola possible. It was a sad night for Ankeny when the final score showed a vic- tory for us with a score of 56-44. I guess luck was with useJoe had on his lucky pants. 22-VVe had our victory assembly today. Mr. Deaton was guest speaker and Dennis and Gordy pre- sented Mr. Smith with a beautiful trophy nam- ing us conference champs for the year. Steve Deaton presented him with the sophomore teamis trophy for winning the conference. It should have been a joyous assembly, but at the same time some seniors had to be a little sentimental. The wrestlers were also rewarded with medals for their good placings in the district meet. Foreign Language Night! It was not anticipated that some of the biology guppies would perish in the mountain pond of the Germans, nor that Mary Petersonis 10 by 20, life-size wall hang- ing would stay intact all night. In spite of orders from the boss, there was still a lot of scotch tape used. 2348peech contestants went to Newton and came home with seven firsts out of eight. 264We defeated Pleasantville in the last game of the sectionals, 62-52. 274A few Y-Teen girls set off early this morning for the capital and Legislature Days.
