H igh School Orchestra The graduating exercises for the class of 1934 will be held on May 25 at the High School Auditorium at eight o'clock. This, the last important event of the year for the seniors, will end the school year which has been filled with many activities the last two or three weeks. The class, consisting of seventy-seven, will be led in by the president and vice president of the junior class, James Ritchie and Arlene Shoemaker, while the processional is being played by the high school orchestra. The platform will be decorated with the school colors, purple and gold. After all the seniors have marched in, the Rev. I. J. Brame of the Baptist church will give the invocation. Stoddard Lane, minister of the Plymouth Con- gregational church of Des Moines, will give the address. The Senior Mixed Chorus will sing two numbers during the program, after which G. A. Grant, president of the school board, will present each senior will a diploma signifying that: the four year high school course in finished. The Rev. J. S. Pollock of the United Presbyterian church will give the benediction, after which the postlude will be played by the orchestra which number will end the exercises. 6

The whole ,play takes place in the Winslow home in New York state. Mrs. Winslow has been left a considerable fortune by her deceased husband, to- gether with her two older sons, Mark and Oliver, her married daughter, Augusta, and her husband, Alan, her daughter, Muff, and The Youngest, Richard. Richard, who aspires to be a novelist, is constantly ridiculed and downed by the rest of the family, especially Oliver whom Mother Winslow con- siders to be the immediate head of the family. Nancy Blake, wealthy New York society girl and friend of the family, comes for a visit at the Winslow home. Sensing Richard's need for help, she makes a wager with Muff that he will be on top of the family in a week. She seeks the aid of the boys and Alan, who acts as the family lawyer. Each one has his own method, but Alan, through a technicality of law, finds that in reality Richard is the possessor of the Winslow home and fortune. As a last resort Richard accepts this fact to gain his goal, and the family find themselves at his mercy. Nancy, who is most responsible for the change, finally agrees to share Richard's fortunes in the years to come. 5

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The, I. H. S. Chapter of the National Honor Society, which was instituted in 1928, elected eleven seniors to the society this year. Those selected are chosen by the faculty, basing their choice on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Seniors elected were: Ruth Blake, Winifred Durr, Bruce Farley, Nina Gilbert, Ellen Belle McClelland, Ruth Overton, Bertine Ruble, Charlotte Schrier, Pauline Spangler, Myrtle Spence, and Dale Weeks. STUDENT COUNCIL The I. H. S. Student Council is an important element in the management of the school. It is composed of representatives from each Home Room. The various committee have charge cf the selection of librarians and ushers, plan as- sembly programs, care for the lunch room, and conduct the sale of activity tickets. THE PUR-GO I. H. S. tried something new this year when it undertook the publication of a school paper of which this issue is the last for the year. The name The Pur- Go is coined from the high school colors, purple and gold. It has been published semi-weekly this year as an English project, each English class choosing a staff and issuing at least one number. LECTURE COURSE The talent that came on the I. H. S. Lecture Course this year has been unusually good. The series opened on October 3 with Mr. Zellner, who portrayed historical and book characters such as Abraham Lincoln, St. Paul, and Tom Sawyer. With the musician, O'Hara, a month later, the Music Society of I. H. S. sponsored a program of music, entertainment and skits which was a benefit program for band uniforms. On December 15, George Elias, theman wit-hout a country, gave a lecture concerning the far east. Mr. Cleaves came with motion pictures and inter- esting bits from the South Sea Islands on December 7. All of us had a good time in following him there. Perhaps the outstanding entertainment feature of the year was Mardoni with his clever tricks. Tordt, of Texas University, scared a lot of us with his sna.kes on the fifth of April. T-he Misner Players for the second time were thoroughly appreciated in Ships Afloat on the ninth. The last lecture was given by Caveny on the nineteenth. Caveny is an artist and drew cartoons, and pictures and sculptured. ACTIVITY TICKETS This year an experiment has been tried in the sale of activity tickets for the year at bargain prices to be paid weekly. The experiment has proved success- ful and the plan will probably be continued. 7
