Literary ON IMAGINATION iMadeline Gouchh I pity those who do not know That a relief for grief and woe Lies in the power of every one To illumine darkness with the sun Painting our troubles and our strife With the lovely pastel shades of life. Do yfu ev-er use your imagination? How dull and stupid life would be without the delicate coloring of imagination. To be able to use your imagination is an art truly as great as painting or music. - The skillful touches of an imagination activelyx used are truly as beautiful as a great painting. Everyone possesses the ability to paint a picture in his mind, to make a heaven out of havoc. Napoleon once said, Imagination rules the world. It rules the world because it regulates our ambitions and dreams and goals of life. We cannot portray oun soul or express our thoughts without imagination of one kind or another. The soul without imagination is what an observatory would be without a telescope. Through imagination we dull and dispel the sorbid objects of life and live in a world of beautiful dreams. Imagination makes life take on a more beautiful aspect. As Pascal once said, Imagination creates beauty, justice, and happiness, which are everything, in this world. The life of Woodrow Wilson was one of constantly striving to reach his goal of imagination, eternal peace for the world. In fact, all the lives of our great citizens have been in some way affected by this faculty. Many scoff at the idle play of the imagination. Many people do not believe in the magic fairy tales for children. They contend that these tea-ch children to tell untruths. The only trouble wi-th these unbelievers is that they have forgotten how to use their imagination. Just try it and see how light it makes your daily tasks. Whether your task be washing dishes or digging ditches, your imagination can make your surround- ings beautiful and your work lighter. AUTUMN LEAVES CMa.ry Carr! The whirling and swirling of frisky leaves, Intrigued me one Fall day, Where they were going was not to my knowing As they danced on their way, so gay. Here was another throng-not the same, Dejected. and sad were they, What they were thinking, I could not help linking, With the colors of black and gray. To people these leaves may be compared, Saddened or gay are they. Some go on a spree, and laugh in much glee, While others, in spirits, decay. ' 15

TRIBUTE TO THE WOODS iEdythe Eno! Tramping, tramping, All d-ay long, Listening to the sweet birds' song. Woods of Green, ' You hold a spell Impossible now to write or tell. Breathing, inhaling, Every breeze, The air being purified by your trees. Mother Nature placed you here To remind us God is always near. FACES 4Mery Needlesy Disguise it as you may, your face reveals your ,personality and charalcter. Perhaps it is the expression of your eyes or the lines of your mouth that are most revealing. As I walk down the street a myriad of interesting faces meet my eyes. What a splendid game it is to read people's faces. Therei a lonely face with a down- cast expression and a drooping mouth. Here and there happy faces with laughing, twinkling eyes and curved mouith. Next I meet an important looking man. An air of business is stamped upon his face. Intelligent eyes take in all that goes around him. Next a dapper youth sporting his first mustache. Truly a lady's man with his two women companions at his side. A' slightly patronizing and extremely im- portant air is presented by this youth. My, what a. weak looking face. -Small shifting eyes, misplaced hair, and sn face not very recently shaved. I feel as though I am gazing at a shadow character who is not much better thani his appearance. What a contrast we now see. A young boy apparently in poor circumstances, yet with a cheery, hopeful expression. Paper, Mister, are -his eager words. Though he is only a poor newsboy wandering the streets, he isras -cheerful as though he had much money. A frigid stare meets my eyes. A very young, well groomed lady walks into view. As though she owned the whole world. Her cold mouth and haughty glance dispel every trace of beauty' she might possess. And so down the street I pass, a thousand dramas unfolding before my eyes. If only I had the power to glance intol people'S hearts and minds, how extremely fascinating it would be. Yet I would like to give one little warning. Watch your character, for your face will surely .betray you in some way-although it is only a line or some tiny expression, it will- characterize you. CElsie Bonsalll 'Tis evening, and the glowing sun Is sinking to its rest. A quiet breeze bestirs itself 5 Winged -creatures seek their rest. A dusky veil steals o'er the sky, Wherein are twinkling drops of dew That shine and glimmer there till dawn And gently lift her veil of blue. A silver moonboat ventures far Out on a peaceful quiet sea, But in the smiling morning light It vanishes from me. 16
