Dramatics Q DECLAMATION In the final declama.tion contest, which was held Friday, February 16, Virginia Hall in the oratorical division won first with Eyes That See Not. In dramatic, Helen Roberts, with The Least of These, won first. In the humorous division, Dorothy Litton won first with Bottled Sunshine. Anne White directed the contestants. On Februa.ry 18 in the preliminary contest Virginia Hall placed second in oratorical, Helen Roberts placed first in dramatic, and Dorothy Litton placed second in the humorous division. Helen Roberts represented us in the pne- district contest. DEBATE Resolved, That America s-hould adopt the essential features of the British Broadcasting System was the question for discussion all over the state this year. Our I. H. S. debaters, Dale Weeks, Madeline Couch, Myrtle Spence, Ruth Schooler and Virginia Hall, debated with Osceola, Winterset, Lincoln, Pella and other schools defending both sides of the question. PLAYS I. H. S. has a great many talented players besides those in the junior and senior class plays. The Morosoph Players put on in assembly recently The Little Gentleman, Amanda and Love, and How Tom Sawyer Whitewashed the Fence, dramatizations made in their short story course, and exceptional talent was revealed in many of our sophomores. Two other plays, 'iThe Christmas Party and The Best Gift, sponsored by the Hi-Y a.nd G. R., were given before Christmas and were a great success. Another group of girls featured a successful Puppet Show as the climax of their Hobby Group work. 12

Clark, Randolph, McCarthy Newsome, Barrett, Dawson, VanEe, Bowles A BASKETBALL Although the team did not win as many games as last year, the season was very successful. After a slow start in which they lost to North of Des Moines and Pella, the team speeded up and won eleven consecutive games. The County Championship was won by defeating Spring Hill in the final and the .South Central Conference was won for the second consecutive year. Summary of Year's News Reception: September I 5 This was the night when the sophomores got acquainted with the frivolous juniors and the dignified seniors. All the fun was started by John Horsley and ended in a Walkathon. Indian Treasure Hunt: October 9 This evening all the Girl Reserves and Hi-Y fellows in'individual tribes turned into Indians and stalked away on a real treasure hunt. Late in the evening the citizens of lndianola were aroused by a loud clamor and on investigation found all the Indians whooping around their spoils at a. huge campfire. Representatives lo News Convention: Noivember 17 Today Myrtle took Nina Ruth, Dick and Catherine and represented our school in Des Moines at a Newspaper Convention. Of course the Pur-Go went along and we heard they all enjoyed themselves. ' Junior Class Play: December 8 This was when Arlene and Dick got their big thrill in Daddy Long Legs. There was a great crowd out to see the orphan children Qespecially Anna Mae in pig-tailsj. Hi-Y and G. R. Cabinet Party: January 6 G. R.-Hi-Y Cabinet Party was held at Popeye's Restaurant on Howard streetf Olive Oil and her friends prepared delicious boxes of spinach for Popeye and his boy friends, which were sold in terms of pezozes. Popeye must have won a fight recently for he entertained all the couples at a show afterward. High School Carnival: February 23 At the I. H. S. Carnival all the home rooms put on stunts. Mr. Grange re- ceived his first and only finger-wave. Romance played an important part in the Pirates Cavern where delightful treats were served. In the assembly a stage show featuring Football Heroes was put on Qthanks to Ellen Bellej with a real jazz orchestra-and how? . Character Emphasis Program: March 13 Today the school was much pepped up by talks given by Mrs. Morgan of Iowa City. She talked to both the girls and fellows on Girl and Fellow Relation- ships and other personal problems. Shel was honored at a G. R.. tea afterward. Girls' Gym Exhibition: March 21 This year, on March 21, the girls' gym class gave a demonstration before the pupils of Junior High, Hawthorne, and Irving in the afternoon. In the evening the Senior High and the public were invited to attend. They presented folk danc- ing, games, exercises and stunts. At the close of th program, the girls formed the letters I. H. S. and the high school song was sung. This was a demonstration of the different things the girls had been doing in their classes all year. 13
