Clark, Randolph, McCarthy Newsome, Barrett, Dawson, VanEe, Bowles A BASKETBALL Although the team did not win as many games as last year, the season was very successful. After a slow start in which they lost to North of Des Moines and Pella, the team speeded up and won eleven consecutive games. The County Championship was won by defeating Spring Hill in the final and the .South Central Conference was won for the second consecutive year. On the schedule there were some unusually good teams, such as Chariton and Boone. The local high gave both of these teams a good game. S. .....,. ........ . 7 TRACK The track season was above average this year. Although there were no outstanding individuals on the team, more points were scored in the meets than in former years. At the Stuart Relays, Farley won first ini the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 9 inches. At Valley Junction, Harold Newsome won the javelin throw with a toss of 14.4 feet 1 inch. Dramatics Q DECLAMATION In the final declama.tion contest, which was held Friday, February 16, Virginia Hall in the oratorical division won first with Eyes That See Not. In dramatic, Helen Roberts, with The Least of These, won first. In the humorous division, Dorothy Litton won first with Bottled Sunshine. Anne White directed the contestants. On Februa.ry 18 in the preliminary contest Virginia Hall placed second in oratorical, Helen Roberts placed first in dramatic, and Dorothy Litton placed second in the humorous division. Helen Roberts represented us in the pne- district contest. DEBATE Resolved, That America s-hould adopt the essential features of the British Broadcasting System was the question for discussion all over the state this year. Our I. H. S. debaters, Dale Weeks, Madeline Couch, Myrtle Spence, Ruth Schooler and Virginia Hall, debated with Osceola, Winterset, Lincoln, Pella and other schools defending both sides of the question. PLAYS I. H. S. has a great many talented players besides those in the junior and senior class plays. The Morosoph Players put on in assembly recently The Little Gentleman, Amanda and Love, and How Tom Sawyer Whitewashed the Fence, dramatizations made in their short story course, and exceptional talent was revealed in many of our sophomores. Two other plays, 'iThe Christmas Party and The Best Gift, sponsored by the Hi-Y a.nd G. R., were given before Christmas and were a great success. Another group of girls featured a successful Puppet Show as the climax of their Hobby Group work. 12
