Although cheerleaders are known for their dedication and practice, this year’s varsity squad has seemed capable of turning hard work into loads of fun. While attending summer camp in Florida, the girls had a four-day side trip to Pensacola Beach. Although they had fun in the sun, they sacri- ficed early morning sleep hours as well. Hours such as 6.00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. were not unusual during their “2-a-day” practice sessions before camp. Our varsity squad left the University of West Florida with several honors. In addition to being awarded the Overall Spirit Award and bringing home the only megaphone, the group also left with four Superior blue ribbons and was Runner-Up in the Award of Excellence. Among many other challenges this year, this group also had to adjust to many first-time changes. This has been the first year to combine football and basketball cheerleaders into one unit. Also, there was an addition of two members to the squad. The cheerleaders agree that the double season was tir- ing, but it was rewarding just the same. The change in numbers from ten to twelve meant that we had to re-arrange many of our old routines. Though these girls have had their trying moments, they have all managed to pull together through caring and sharing. As they look back over their year, Dawn, Julia, Wendy, Lisa, Stuart, Melissa, Sandra, Gena, Sayle, Deven, Marcella, and Jere each have found that it was nice to know they had eleven extra sisters.
