Dear Colleagues, CONGRATULATIONS: The event of medical school graduation is evidence to society of the competency and skill you have acquired to serve our fellow man. It acknowledges your discipline and ability to learn and to apply. The inner sentiments of your sense of duty, service and Truth is important. It is to that spirit that I hope you will continually listen and be guided by! God bless. Best wishes. Keep in touch. Sincerely Yours, James E. Carter, M.D. Associate Dean Student and Curricular Affairs To: The Class of 1987 It has been said that being a physician is, at its best, intellectually challenging, emotionally rewarding, and socially esteemed. The development of a college graduate into a physician is one of the most exciting transfor- mations a human being can experience. I am pleased to have had a small part in contributing to your transformation. The exciting part of any profession is the transfer of skills, knowledge, and philosophy of life to the next generation. I encourage you to take this responsibility seriously so that the graduates over the intervening years will benefit from your education. It has been my pleasure working with you and I wish you continued success in your learning and practice. Sincerely, Fred L. Ficklin, Ed.D. Assistant Dean 2

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE INDIANA UNIVERSITY TO THE CLASS OF 1987 OFFICE OF THE DEAN Fcsler Hall 302 1120 South Drive Indiana L’niver ity Medical Center Indianapoiis. Indiana 46223 t3171 274-8157 The very best part of being Dean of this medical school is watching people develop. Your class is particularly important to me. You are the first ones I have watched as Dean throughout your entire experience here. Each of you has achieved more than you might have thought possible. Each of you is now prepared to move on to your next level of development with confidence. You have a great opportunity and responsibility to excel in whatever field of medicine you desire, and the future will need the best you can give — to patients, to each other and to society. New physicians of this decade will have a chance and an obligation to guide society through more difficult choices than any other group of the past or perhaps the future. Consequently, do not hesitate to engage in the debates society will have. You futures, the future course of the profession, and the future course of society depend upon the wisdom you will bring to the solution of the ethical issues facing us all — some known, some yet unknown. You have worked hard; keep it up; it’s worth the effort. The School wishes you well, I wish you well. We look forward to our continued association and the guidance an involved alumni group can provide. Best wishes for your future. Walter J. Daly. M.D. Dean
