. • ; mr .- 4fS - ’ ii K%ii Four Years Ago, We Arrived At Last At Our Starting Place, Medical School. Since That Time, We Have Learned A Vast Amount Despite Our Differences, The One Experience We Have All Shared Is Each Other — For In The End, It Is Our Friends Who Have Picked Us Up And Carried Us Through To The Other Side. J NIGHT SPOTS RED CARPET LOUNGE r- 9 NMOI MED SCI It’s kinda funny, you know, but after four years you get to thinking of places around here as your friends. Well, not friends, exactly, but companions which remind you of what these years have been. Good old Med Sci. for instance, housing the memories of the basic science years that you’d just as soon forget. All those hours spent in drowsy lecture halls or spent studying, pretending to study, or worrying about not studying. All those crazy “disco dissection” and dog lab days. And all the spare-change kind of time when you had a quick diet Pepsi, Cheetos, and a chat with a friend. 16 in wm I THE WHITE CASTLE How many zebras did you see at University Hospital? You learned rapidly that, as The Mecca, University attracted patients with Strange Diseases or patients with R 0 Strange Diseases and strange staff men interested in diseases. You saw what it meant to be sick when you’re rich, up on the “Krannert” with its velveteen chairs, crystal glasses, and engraved menus. But then you also learned that D5 is D5 even when it’s hanging from gold IV poles, and Vfib is Vfib no matter how much insurance you have. 20 MAY WE HELP YOU I THE VAH SPA Ah. the Spa. home of the friendly neighborhood vet come in out of the cold. What you learned at the V.A.: 1. how to draw blood from a turnip (muttering V.A., may we hurt you? under your breath) 2. what socialized medicine would be like 3. how to extract a value from the lab without hearing Sorry, we never got the specimen 4. what it means to be down and out 5. and Ca on the PA at the V.A. (If tumor's the rumor ...) They hired the government’s best prison architect; bought some art. foam slippers and brown bathrobes; made it a week's wait for an upper Gl; and then discounted the cigarettes in the commissary — anything to keep the customers satisfied ... 21 THE WIZ Can you ever make anyone understand the wild and wacky world of Wishard? After you got there, you swore off drinking (for awhile), put on a PPD, and started advocating gun control. Remember the 20-year-old G5P4 in OB clinic who said, “Look at all the young girls here these days! ? Remember the one good 9:30 meal you had? Remember the story about the nurse who coded on an illicit rendezvous in Sun- shine Hall? Remember the heroin addict who showed you where his best veins were? 23 Of all of the places in the world, Riley will either make you believe in God or make you believe there is no God. Riley teaches you what heroism is. and courage, because those kids have it. They have it more and better than you would have had it if you were their age, or at least you feel that way. At Riley, though, you also get a glance at the void, because sickness or death for a kid doesn't seem to have any possible meaning and it makes you question sometimes. And Riley, more than anything, makes you work hard at being a healer because you know you’re not just saving a life, you’re saving a life’s worth of potential. Dear Colleagues: Congratulations on receiving your M.D.I You have now completed the formal part of your medical studies and are ready to begin your specialty training. During your college years you developed as a person. You acquired values, a philosophy of life, a sense of self, a concern for community, empathy for your fellow man and a knowledge of history. You dreamt big dreams. You channeled your curiosity into thousands of questions and disciplined yourself into reflective thought. You dared to try new things. You learned what is right, what is reasonable and what is realistic. You even gained an appreciation of your own limitations. You wanted to make a difference and a very special contribution. During the past four years, you have learned much factual knowledge and acquired many important skills. Perhaps the most important thing you learned was to communicate with sick people. You did a lot of reading, thinking, speaking, writing and, most importantly, listening. You have experienced the art and the science of medicine. You have lived with fatigue. You have been uplifted when your efforts have provided comfort and brought hope. You are well prepared for the challenges ahead. I wish you the very best of success in your career.
