There are two main definitions: the end of a period of study or the act of beginning. It is really both! Commencement, while a significant milestone, is not an end in itself. It marks the turning point from supervised instruction to lifelong learning on your own. school was wrong and that the trouble is, we can't tell which half. This anecdote helps to emphasize that much of what you have learned, particularly in regard to factual data, will soon be out-of-date and in need of revision. given you a solid basis of critical concepts, of essential skills, of thinking and acting and feeling as a physician. We trust that you have learned to reason analytically and that you will always question and seek to stay intellectually alive, professionally relevant and aim to continue your education. I suppose that every graduating class has been told that it is embarking on the practice of medicine in the midst of the most dif- ficult times. Your class is no exception. Not since the turbulent 1920's, however, has there been so much change, turmoil and upheaval. It is a most exciting time - economically, politically, socially and medically! challenges ahead. If you practice with compassion, apply your skills with understanding and give of yourself with humility, you will find fulfillment in your chosen profession.
