Indiana University School of Medicine Class of 1975 INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINL 1100 WEST MICHIGAN STREET • INDIANAPOLIS. INDIANA 46202 OFFICE OF THE DEAN Dear Colleagues: Commencement! There are two main definitions: the end of a period of study or the act of beginning. It is really both! Commencement, while a significant milestone, is not an end in itself. It marks the turning point from supervised instruction to lifelong learning on your own. school was wrong and that the trouble is, we can't tell which half. This anecdote helps to emphasize that much of what you have learned, particularly in regard to factual data, will soon be out-of-date and in need of revision. given you a solid basis of critical concepts, of essential skills, of thinking and acting and feeling as a physician. We trust that you have learned to reason analytically and that you will always question and seek to stay intellectually alive, professionally relevant and aim to continue your education. I suppose that every graduating class has been told that it is embarking on the practice of medicine in the midst of the most dif- ficult times. Your class is no exception. Not since the turbulent 1920's, however, has there been so much change, turmoil and upheaval. It is a most exciting time - economically, politically, socially and medically! challenges ahead. If you practice with compassion, apply your skills with understanding and give of yourself with humility, you will find fulfillment in your chosen profession. Someone once observed that half of what we taught you in We do hope that the four years we have spent together nave I am confident that you have been well equipped for the With every good wish for success. Sincerely yours. Steven C. Nothing spoken but words of Medicine, these diligent students attempt to keep one another awake. Typical mid-afternoon Histology lecture. G. Aronoff, P. Gresham, R. Shoemaker, and B. Greenwood and an unidentified comatose object. The South Side Health Clinic is a non-profit free clinic staffed by students and faculty of I. U. M. C. Observation is the surgical role of the medical student. Bill Kneeland seems pleased after being told no murmurs or gallops . 6 Many aspirant pediatricians were caught riding this merry-go-round in the wee hours of the morning. Cita Bradbum is convinced this baby has a heart, but what else? Talking to the patients is a part of being a Doc . Dr. Robert Shcllhammcr lectures to one of the anatomy classes. Here we sec Jeff Petticrew, Bill Frey, Chuck McCormick, Rich Babayan, Bob Shoemaker, Fred Arensman and C. T. Fletcher. Senior Day — a Team Effort After four years of being on the receiving end, it was a treat to pro- vide our beloved faculty colleagues a little feedback--all in good fun, of course. Senior Day provided this opportunity, in addition to giving us a chance to catch up on old friend- ships. It was all possible due to the efforts of the class officers and some dedicated volunteers. In par- ticular we wish to thank John Pass- more and his magic act, and Tex” Ritter and Jerry House for the sur- gical flick. The vocal talent was provided by Steve Isenberg, Tom Eberts, Bob Shoemaker, Dave Hathaway with Fritz Kiechle on the piano. But Senior Day will es- pecially be remembered for the humor contributed by Ed Langston as host and moderator. Dave Hathaway, C.T. Fletcher, Kyle Loy, Terry Ihnat, Ted Bartley, and Tom Eberts demonstrate their surgical skill. 12 Not many of us realized we had a comedian in our class, but Ed Langston surprised us all with his hilarious monologue. Senior Day was a success due to Ed Langston. Dr. John Passmore, a medicine resident, and his lovely wife Crystal, provided some mystifying entertainment. John is booked into several local nightclubs with his magic act. In between the skits, Tom Eberts, Dan Stout, Jeff Petticrew and a visitor help themselves to a bit of liquid refreshment. After everyone was satiated, the high point of the day occurred when the Lilly black bags with the long sought M.D. stamped in gold, were passed out to all the Seniors. 13 Seen here enjoying the Senior Day banquet are Dick Griffith, A1 Hilgeman, Gordon Wolf and Carl Waggonner. The Eastside Knights of Columbus served as host to the affair. 14 Dan Shull, Rob Lindsey, Terry Frazer, C. T. Fletcher and Sid Steinkeller poke some fun at the Anesthesiology Department. The antics of Curt Stine and Bob Barnes are backed up with the vocal talents of Tom Eberts, Steve Isen- berg and Bob Shoemaker with Fritz Kicchle on the piano. Steve Priddy, John Pickel and Nick Rader are puzzled by the diagnosis of the young lady on the table played by Jerry House. Hal Lawrence shares sonic drinks and laughs with Jim Hall, and Darrell Hofer who have their backs to the camera. Tom Foster, Ron Kracke and Dan Shull celebrate their just completed viscerectomy. The patient does not appear too grateful. 15 A Typical Day — . . . begins following a sleepless night on call at anyone of a num- ber of hospitals in Indy. Fred Arensman, weary from a night of I. V. 'S, N. G. 'S, pit drip or what- ever, drags his bod across campus. Pete Scott and a quick break in the canteen before getting under way and ... a potty break. t 16 . . . Still not awake, Ted Bart- ley and Bill Greenwood hit the cafeteria for another cup. Before long, it's lunch time, and, fin- ally, a cool Frosty (s). Bill Green- wood and Tom Foster are set for an evening of heavy booking. 17 Match Day This group of lovely ladies hold our fate in their hand as we await the results of the match. Tom Johnson receives the scaled envelope from Bar- bara Carter. 18 Dr. Carter discusses the results of the match with one of our classmates. I.cft to Right: Glenn W. Irwin, Jr. , M. Columbus The paths that brought all of us to medical school four years ago were as varied as our own personalities. But for these past four years, our paths moved in parallel. We were able to see in others, perhaps more clearly than in ourselves, that gradual, day by day metamorphosis of a college student into a Doctor of Medicine. We have shared with each other and with our patients, some of the most profound experiences in which a human being may partake . . . the joy of a new mother, the tragedy of a child’s death, the drama and routine of an emergency room, the loneliness of a forgotten derlict’s death. We, of the yearbook staff, hope that in years to come you may recapture, if just for a few moments, some of the happiness, frustration and humor involved in becoming a physician. Once again our paths will diverge as each of us seeks his or her own fulfillment. Let’s stay in touch over the years. If this yearbook spurs one telephone call or one letter to a classmate not seen or heard from in years, then the time spent in preparing it will not have been in vain. YEARBOOK STAFF: Tom Mattingly............Editor Paul Gresham.............Editor Steve Isenberg...........Editor Robert Shoemaker.........Production Assistant Fred Arensman............Photographer Bill Greenwood........... Photographer Special thanks to Margarita Mattingly for her help in typing. We extend our most sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Indiana University School of Medicine Alumni Association for their help through our four years, and es- pecially for their help and financial support for the Senior Banquet and Commencement. 44 RETRO- SPECTOSC
