TO THE I.U. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GRADUATES OF 1968 I should like to reflect on the events at the I.U. School of Medicine that have occured during your four years in medical school. Several major pro- grams and projects were planned and implemented but in most cases the Class of 1968 did not see the fruit of these efforts. During your freshman year there were several significant events. A new curriculum was being prepared, ground breaking for the new University Hos- pital occurred, and a new dean was appointed. Unfortunately, the University Hospital did not open before your graduation, and you did not benefit signifi- cantly by the new curriculum which provides flexibility, core teaching, an early clinical experience, return to basic science, and a full year of electives during the senior year. During your sophomore year the faculty initiated a study of medical edu- cation in Indiana that became known as the I.U. Plan for Statewide Medical Education. The major goals of the plan were to retain more young physicians of other states to Indiana, and to upgrade continuing medical education to all physicians of the state. When you were juniors a new project was initiated called the Medical Education Resources Program. This provided television production of con- ferences, experiments and lectures for use of medical students. Construction of a closed circuit television network was started so that medical students, interns, residents and practicing physicians throughout the state could benefit from T.V. communication from the School of Medicine. The Combined Degree Medical Program at Bloomington was strengthened by the appointment of a new director and additional staff. The name of this program was changed to Medical Sciences Program--Bloomington. As senior medical students some of you benefited from the new curriculum in that you had the opportunity to take elective courses either on or off the Medical Center campus. The major addition to the Riley Children's Hospital was started but as in the case of the University Hospital it was not completed for your use. You are to be complimented on the results of your internship matching. You not only provided a larger number of filled internships in Indiana but many of you have positions in the outstanding hospitals of the country. You are the largest graduating medical school class in the nation, and have an excellent academic record. Your contribution to American medicine will undoubtedly be very important. Best wishes in your future medical careers. Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. ------- Dean, School of Medicine 5 I USE ONE SIDE ONLY PHYSICAL-PROGRESS-OTHFR (ClftCLL. ONE I
