Both the instant and the eon have been my domain as I have passed the days, weeks, and years of my time here. I « . S It has only been an instant in the face of history, and yes, it seems only yesterday that I came to this place which seemed so vast. But now I call it home. 21 Often I felt that there was too little time to learn even what was required of me. There was so much to experience; so many people to meet. 22 I I I 23 Those I did come in contact with taught me a lot. Not the least of my lessons was that learning is not a phenomenon of the classrooms; I learned outside as well as within. 0! . ' 24 25 26 Ihoufiji the pressures of time were iireat, I made it through. I learned to cojje. In contrast to the pressure, I discovered an inner reserve of patience I had rwt realized I possessed. It lead to discipline. 27 28 had to work when I would have preferred to relax. But I still found time for friends, for fun — for the small things that mean the most. 29 Yes, I have experienced time. It has guided me in the course of my enrollment at lUP. Time has helped me grow like a tree with many branches of interest. It has also given me roots, and made me strong — like an oak. 30 Vnteraetions Dorms Dorm living. Hardly an experience that ' s easy to put into words. Most of us have lived there and we ' ve all come to know its weaknesses and its strengths. When we lived in Elsch, Lawrence, Whilnivre, or W ' ahr, we could find plenty of reasoas to move out. EJccuses such as: we ' re not really on our own, and no drinking in the dorms, were just a few of the more popular ones. Now looking back on it — wasn ' t it kind of fim to sneak that half- keg into your room past the hall coun- selor on duty? Well, at least it was fim until you started the party and found out that it was the first time in years that the counselor decided to spend a quiet eve- ning at home in his room. Then, of course, there ' s the meal plan which every dorm- dweller is required to get. . or B — both of them guarantee an exquisite opportu- nity to experience the culinar ' delights of either Foster or Folger cafeteria. But of- ten, the cafe is the only place in town a person can go to eat six desserts at one sitting. Seriously, living in a residence hall can be one of the most rewarding of all college experiences. You can alwavs find a friend to talk with, study with, laugh with and even cry with if necessary. .■Vnd besides, where else could you find one or two other people crazy enough to go out and throw snowballs at three in the morning — whether it ' s snowing or not? 32 34 lit 35 36 37 38 ' . ..- ' .m .c SiOikai . 39 Langham 3--- ?V - 40 41 42 43 ' A 44 I 45 46 47 Off-Campus Dorms Leininger, MacGregor, Algonquin, Hope, Wyoming, and Leroy. If you are looking for an off-campas dorm, Indiana has sev- eral from which to choose. Whether it is Oakland, Rooney, or one of the above, each offers the convenience of dorm living without University regulations. Each dorm, owned by an individual or corpo- ration, sets its own niles and employs its own counselors. They cater to people who cannot get University housing, or who want to live in a different location. Some, like Leininger. have dining facilities for the residents, while others are set up just like the on-campus dorms. Many have private rooms for those who prefer them. But no matter how they operate, off- campus dorms offer lUPs students con- venient, resonably-priced housing. .: i: 1 « 1  n 48 OE Jy an T ■imKwTi 1 i 1 1 tl ' 49 Apartments N ' inetv-eight, ninet -nine, one hiuidrecl, or so it seems by the time you get to the top of the steps with the groceries. Our off- campus apartments somehow ahvays seem to lie at the top of a million steps or six miles from the campus. Even so, apart- ment life means that you ' re finally on vour own. There are no hall counselors to evaluate, hut you have to cook for vour- self and there ' s no longer anyone to clean the bathroom for you. There is something satisf ing about finding and moving into that first apart- ment — even though you have to move a mountain of jimk into a two-room abode you share with seven other people. Yet the joy of living vour own lifest le, behol- den only to your landlord, makes it more than worth everv minor inconvenience. 50 Houses First, find ten people (preferably of the same sex) who think they might l e able to live together. Next, start looking at least six months in aclviuue; put ads in the papers, ask Clark Hall, bother your friends who already live off campus. Fi- nally — when you find something that has not lieen condemned and Ls not a winter resort for small, furr - vermin — sUp the landlord a few extra dollars just to be sure he ' ll hold it for you. But, never fear, once you have that off ampiLS house sith a lovely view of somebody ' s nist Buick right outside vour front door, the fim has just begim. Undoubtedly, the l est thing about living in an off-campus house in the CLOSE relationships you develop with your roomies. Whether its fighting for the bathroom on the night of a big date, typing to your roommate ' s Pink Floyd albimi, or studying anatomy together (no matter whose it is), moving out of the dorms to try conununal living is a great experience — if one of you can cook! . ' A 52 53 Greeks Swallowing goldfish, flagpole sitting, and marching single-file backwards. That ' s what your parents thought when you told them you were ' going Greek. ' Since then, you ' ve learned being Greek means more than three times to a match and singing ridiculous songs. Sure there ' s lots of fim involved like Sigma Chi Derby Days, Phi Psi 500, parties, and fornuds. Greek life is a feeling not to l: e described by a member of a sorority or fraternity, or felt by one who isn ' t. If you ' re fortunate enough to be a Greek, you know just how important alpha, beta, gamma, and the rest of those letters are. You wear them and cherish them forever. ■H m El I ' ' K 1 ' 1 ■1 ' . On a campus where housing is some- times impossible to find, the next Iwst option is often a Chevy with reclining bucket seats. The commuter ' s car is his best friend. It ' s a place to keep books, clothes, used coffee cups, and those favorite. Charlie Daniels Band tapes. It ' s also a great place to catch a little shut-eye between lectures — pro- vided, that is, you don ' t lose the car in a pot hole on your way to the parking lot! 56 57 Couples College provides lots of things, including the chance to fall in love. At II ' P, just alxjut the time the squirrels get back from Florida — or wherever they spend their winters — one begins to see people walking arm in arm across the Oak Cirove. Some couples may be seen blow- ing a hurried kiss as they nm for class, while others catch a glimpse of that spe- cial someone during a lecture on physics. But. whether it ' s the guy you were just lavaliered to or the girl you ' ve jiLst mar- ried, manv people at I UP share something special with that special someone. It ' s that caring that makes it spring all year round. 58 59 Branch Campuses Kittanning aiid Piinxsiitawney. Whenever we think of ll ' P, we lix) often neglect our two branch campuses. But each, located 30 miles in opposite directions of the main campus, is important in its own Not onlv do these campuses give Indiana the prestige of being the only state-owned imiversitv to have branches, but they also help to make us the largest state-owned educational institution. The Big K and Fuaw were home for many of as during our first year or two at college. It was there that we met our best friend and met the prof who helped us survive the traimia of l)eing a freshman. One can safeK say that a branch campus is the place for those of us who prefer a family atmosphere. 60 •• — [ 1 61 W 1 i - • 1 1 ' -a i;J 1 fc • l f. Students at Pennsylvania State Colleges and lUP skipped classes in favor of at- tending B-Day workshops on tuition re- form in the New Student Lounge of the Student Union. Late in the afternoon, an overflow crowd gathered in Fisher . uditorium for a pro- test rally led hv SGA and CAS. The bazaar is designed to give students a chance to display their handiwork and is an economical place to pick up last-min- ute purchases. 76 Activities Fair Various lUP organizations set up exhibit booths and displayed their pet projects at the annual Activities Fair. Demonstra- tions, free samples and performing groups were among the festivities. - % y k T7 Australia ' s Little River Band rocked with a sellout crowd in the Field House October 6, 1979. Michael Woods, C;erry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell played hits from their ten-year career, including I Need You, Daisy Jane, Tin Man, and Horse With No Name. 81 The Dirt Band 82 On Sunday, April 27, The Dirt Band plaved to an almost-capacity crowd in Memorial Field House. The seven-man troupe performed exceptional vocal and instrumental selectioas that kept the au- dience on its feet for the duration of the concert. They presented such songs as In for the Night, Mr. Bojangles, and 1814. ' highlight of the show was the crowd-plea-ser . merican Dream from their newest album of the same name. . fter such a worthwhile concert, ILP looks forward to hosting The Dirt Band again in the future. 83 M Livingston Taylor Down-home fountry boy Livingston Tay- lor rehimed to lUP as a solo performer on September 22, 1979 after opening various concerts previously. Taylor, brother of vocalist James Taylor, held his own with just a guitar while he sang Over the Rainbow and his hit I Will Be in Love With You. 84 Harry Chapin Harry Keep the Change Chapin played before a sellout crowd in Fisher Audito- rium March 4, 1980. During hLs benefit concert for World Hunger, Chapin per- formed his hits Taxi, Cat ' s in the Cradle, and Circle while imploring those in the audience to end starvation around the world. 85 Josh White Folk, rock, and Gospel singer Josh White, Jr. performed Tuesday, October 23 in Fisher Auditorium. . folk performer since the age of four, White said colleges are his favorite place to play because the audiences are more intimate and respon- sive. With his partner John Ba-sset, White had the audience participate in a number of tunes which included country and blues selections. No matter what style, though. Josh was not lying when he announced. I am good. He was. 86 Peaches and Herb ■Reunited, Shake Your Groove Thing, and Roller Skatin ' Mate were just a few hits Peaches and Herb performed for the packed crowd April 20 in the Field House. The over-riding theme of their show was love, and both the audience and the performers seemed to love what they were doing. Backed up by the nine-mem- ber band Too Hot, and a lot of crowd enthusiasm. Peaches and Herb ended their superb performance to the time of a ten minute ovation that brought them back for more great music. 87 Coffeehouses Where can you go on campus for free fiui and entertainment of exceptional quality, whether it ' s jazz, rock and roll, or good old footstomping hluegrass? An evening in attendance at one of lUP ' s many coffee- houses will guarantee an evening of enjoy- ment. They ' re held in the New Lounge of the Student Union usually on Friday and Sat- urday nights, and they ' re sponsored by the Activities Board. So, no matter what your ta-stes, or whether you prefer the music of Barrv Drake and Jan McLaughlin, or Mi- chael Spiro, there ' s always something for you at the coffeehouses to enjoy. 89 Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago The Gregg Smith Singers 90 5X2 Dance Company Count Basic And His Orchestra 91 Ohio Ballet P.D.Q. Seale, a well-known political activ- ist during the sixties, stated that the tur- l)ulent sixties decade represents the high tide of social change while he suggested the eighties represent the time to realize that the domestic problems have not l)een solved. As a director of .advocates Seen, a lobbying and community organizing group, Seale pledged to do evervthing possible to see that they will be seen. David Frye David Frve, nationalK-knowii comedian and political satirist, performed at Fisher . uditoriiun on Monday, . pril 21st. Through his suggestions, both verbal and non-verbal, Kreskin turned out a corps of spacemen, produced an atmosphere so hot that several participants began to strip, read the minds of audience members with startUng acc-uracy, and even submitted his pavcheck for a trick that was proof of his psvchic capabilities. Kreskin, led offstage by three audience members, directed oth- ers to hide his paycheck. Upon his return, it took him onh minutes to recover the check from its hiding place imder a po- licemans cap. Kreskin also offered a monetary reward to any skeptic who could prove he used any devices in his performance. But the en- tertainer ' s fantastic act made us all be- lievers. 96 Tim Settimi Mime Tim Settimi presented a classic- show to a Fisher Auditorium crowd on Wednesday, March 5. Settimi executed all of his imaginatve presentations with a Hair and precision that not only showed his expertise, but his love for his work. With- out a sound, Settimi had the audience see ' a hometown parade, a pair of disco dancers, and a man fishing. In hLs skit, Justice, Settimi portrayed a thief scaling walls and cracking a safe. The thief is caught hut manages to escape, only to hang himself accidentally upon his exit. Settimi did, however, appeal to the audi- tory sen.se when he played his flute and sang a song entitled, I ' m A-goin ' Fish- It took no stretch of the imagination to see Tim Settimi as the extraordinary artist he is. 97 Derby Days Perhaps nothing embodies the spirit of Creek Week at Il ' P more than Sigma C:hi Derhy Days. This year. Alpha Sigma Tan won the first place trophy for gathering the most points. But all sororities joined together in friendly competition to raise money for Camp Orenda. The com- petition reached its peak at Keith Field during the games as different sororities participated in events like Dress A Sig, and everyone ' s favorite, Musical Ice Buckets. Heidi Sampson, a Sigma Sigma Sigma sister, reigned as Derby Days Queen. This year ' s Golden Derby was rescued from the basement of John Sutton Hail. Derby Days is just one example of the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood each Creek exhibits during Creek ' eek. Other events this vear included the Phi Psi 500 and the .■11-Creek Pledge Mixer. 98 ' «? Farm Day was a siui-filled success full of frislwes, egg- tossing, and a hat contest. Vans from the L ' nion transported students to the fiirm ail day. Once there, evervone could sit back, catch some rays and enjoy the music provided by the group Hef- wae. Weather didn ' t spoil the fim for anylrady. Libraries, reading rooms and study lounges are the obvious, but not the only choices. Often they close too early or resemble an unopened sardine can. Hard-core studiers have been known to seek out and use every available nook and cranny — every out of the way place on campus. Doesn ' t it somehow seem worth it all when, as he passes back the tests, the prof says, The highest grade in the class was a ninety-four. You turn to that last page, and there it is in bright red ink — 94! Organizations 1 Today I want to do things to be doing them, not to he doing something else, I do not want to do things to sell myself. I don ' t want to do nice things for people so that I will be nice. I don ' t want to work to make money, I want to work to work. t Today I don ' t want to live for, I want to live. — Hugh Prather 148 liip: (.. I ' homan, P. EllLs, (;. Bilger, A.
