' .!i il 1 M DICK THORNBU . .NDIOATE rOP GOVERNO _vvtu, FEB (5,330 AiNiON nmci We hold these truths to be self-evi- dent marked the birth of a political awareness that has grown, and ma- tured and weatherd the storms of the turbulant sixties. McCarthyism gave rise to flower power and mellowed into active self-awareness. The politi- cal idealist of today has tempered his goals and aspirations with the fires of Watergate and more cautiously exam- ines the platform of even the most mrld-mannered campaigner. Today ' s governmental watch dog is looking for quieter changes but more lasting ones. 23 Today ' s woman is not just another pretty tace. Her values have shifted towards independence and she ac- tively supports the need for change. With the ERA well on its way to being a reality, the female of the late sev- enties looks towards equality both in word and in practice. Her search is not easy and the road she travels is rough. Competition m todays tight job market is keen but women are making their mark —not just as wives and mothers but also as vital parts of a success-oriented so- ciety. W 24 Women; A Shift of Values m j0 ' f Religion: A Life Experience 26 Religion, once shyed away from by apprehensive students, is back again in a quiet more reflective v ay. With the creation of ' Star Wars and the saying ' May the Force Be With You, humanity looks tov ard a resurgance in something to believe in. Sun wor- shippers follow the rays religiously and those engaged in organized religion still seek the meaning of life. But today ' s pilgrim is more cautious, care- ful to look behind each masked do- gooder to the source of real wisdom and truth only to be found by making all of life a religious experience. 27 28 Arts: New Expression in Old Media Creativity has been around for a long time but IS continually being mani- fested in new ways. Vibrant colors, new combinations in movement and sound make each artist unique. How- ever, what unites artists is their striv- ing for perfection achieved by the masters. Today ' s artist once again looks at na- ture as he copies her beauty, mag- nifying her deterioration all the while being careful not only to imitate but to originate. 29 Family: A Joining of Spirit •frf-.-famfilm i |. The borders of family life, once marked by father, mother and sibling rivals have been extended to include a much broader scope of unity. Gay liberation has been partially success- ful in their quest to have the homosex- ual lifestyle more accepted socially. Also the concept of couples living to- gether without a formal marriage com- mittment is widespread and not so frowned upon, As the love shared between couples grows deeper no matter what the fam- ily situation is, the term takes on a new meaning today. A family . . . born from love and common ideals is no longer nuclear but open to all whether they share biological ties or merely join in spirit. 31 What was once considered a passing fad now symbolizes a growing part of America. The Frisbee, soaring, flying, floating, gives today ' s youth a jump on leisure activities. The jogger, bicycler and the exerciser all find release by toning a body easily neglected in this push button world. Various modes of entertainment are more accessible to all whether it be lectures, art shows or concerts. These activities have proven effective and today ' s back-to-nature minded adult is no longer a pace setter, but a mem- ber of a vast majority of physically active Americans. 32 Leisure: A Growing Part of America 34 Transition: the art of moving from one space to another . . . that has been the role of the 70 ' s student. Not content with the radicalism of a decade ago, the new youth searches for an alternative. Uncertain about the future, today ' s graduate peers into the 80 ' s both expectantly and cautiously. Endings and beginnings mark the present for today ' s young person. Ready to call the past a learning experience and the future a challenge, youth lives, marching on in ideals, attitudes and endeavors but looking backward for direction and guidance. Tomorrow will be better be- cause of yesterday and today. 35 Freshmen: Oriented to College Life i:,-.At ' ' «tl VAii- — -- T ?J ' w ' i ' ' - ' A 38 The first day on campus . . it was obvious you were new. Walking next to a proud set of parents who were beaming because you were accepted at college, you wondered if you would ever learn to call this place home. Those first few weeks of classes were intermingled with homesickness and thoughts that maybe college wasn ' t tor you. But soon weeks turned into a whole semester. You ' d made it, only seven more to go. Time passes quickly here. And the real world beckons to graduates but for the freshman, first year ex- periences mark the beginning of ori- entation to who you are and what you ,_ want to be. .v4o f } You may not remember the days of one-room school houses. But the lUP classes that bring together freshmen through seniors are a thing of the present. Was it that bio lecture that had 400 students busily copying page after page of genetics notes ... or perhaps a psych class where you not only conducted the experiements but served as a guinea pig. Wherever you were, you were not alone because 25 or 30 others just like you found the way to the 8;00 ' s, the night exams and lived to tell about finals. 40 Classes: You Lived To Tell About Them studying: Dean ' s List Possibility Peace and quiet, an atmosphere con- ducive to studying . . . where can you find that at lUP? Sometimes in your room, but you couldn ' t depend on silent stereos and absent roommates. Perhaps the Union, but then again, why did the pop man always have to fill the machine when you were there? Ah, yes, the Oak Grove . . . just you and squirrels but come winter that spot was no longer practical and by spring the construction crews for the new library made more noise than any blaring Kansas album. Ask yourself, is it really worth it just to get good grades and maybe just maybe make the dean ' s list? Chances are you answered that question while buried in the stacks of Stabley read- ing materials. 43 ' ! Tests: Do They Ever Stop? A few minutes more to study. Let ' s see, was that 3 parts water to one part salt or the other way around? Oh what ' s the use, cramming never worked tjefore. Why should it sud- denly change? As you enter the testing room, other bleary souls silently shuffle to their seats. A voice screams inside your head Did I study enough, enough to pass? The prof begins handing out that ominous blank sheet of paper, re- questing you to spill the tons of infor- mation you ' ve stored for moments such as this. As you begin to write a sudden calm comes over you when you realize you knew the material all along ... at least for this class. 45 Monday night trips to Gazebo for half- price pizza . . . water battles in the hallways . . . raids on the guys next door who are cooking a five course meal in a single hot pot. Ah the joys of dorm life. To think that no more than four feet away is a room that resembles yours so much you wonder how you ' ll ever remember where you belong. But be- hold, after a few posters, a plant or two and a bean bag chair, your room is your castle. While a dorm is a required living ar- rangement for freshmen, many stu- dents decide to stay on-campus for their entire time at lUP. Perhaps it ' s the closeness of the 50 people who share bathrooms and drinking foun- tains. Or perhaps, it ' s being able to strike up a conversation with just about anyone down the hall at any- time of the day or night, or stuffing 69 bodies on a single bed for the hell of it. Whatever motivates people to cram all their worldly possessions into a tiny room that is shared by two also keeps them together as they study, eat and sleep and wander through the con- fusing semesters at lUP. 46 Dorms: Your Room is Your Castle fe « f 47 Cafeteria: French Cuisine a la lUP Food, Glorious Food, sang Oliver as he settled for bowl upon bowl of por- ridge. Yet, lUP cafeteria goers learned not to just grin and bear pasta five nights a week. ARA Slater is part of our past now. We are the partakers of a new line of trench cuisine — Servomation. And institutional though that may sound, we were pleasantly surprised to learn bagels, muffins and yogurt were not restaurant dishes you dreamed about. 49 Off-campus Housing: Sophisticated Dorm Living  t J 1 After outgrowing the confines of an lUP dorm, you reach out to the In- diana area. Searching for a house or apartment, you arm yourself with three or four willing roommates who promise to shoulder the responsibility of doing dishes, cleaning and carrying out the trash. Free of curfews, you are able to come and go as you please. Following a rough day of classes, you can leave lUP behind and settle back for a lei- surely evening in a place that is more private and personal than a dorm room. Here you are the boss, the cook, the maid and sometimes it ' s hard to remember you ' re still a stu- dent. -4 4r -. ' i i f 51 Commuters: Caught Between Home and School M«« pih«ai ilgg Late for class, you search frantically for a parking space. Only yesterday you were so sure that by leaving the house 45 minutes early there would surely be a space near the library. During a break between classes you wander around, knowing perfectly well that it ' s useless to go home. So you head for the commuter lounge or perhaps to the union. Tired of feeling left out of every activi- ty you decide to stay around campus for an evening. Could it be that so much goes on at lUP after dark? The life of a communter — sometimes fragmented and cut off from the rest of lUP. But you have already begun to make a transition for you are faced with two seperate worlds. Caught somewhere between home and school you search for an identity not to be found on a parking sticker. 52 Indiana university of Pennsylvania COMMUTER 8685 53 Greek Life: Easy as Alpha Beta Gamma 54 Pledge pins, paddles, bigs, littles, kind of sounds like scouts, doesn ' t it? Those who decide to join a fraternity or sorority at lUP exhibit the same loyalty and devotion that their young- er counterparts display. Here is a ready-made family of broth- ers and sisters united by Greek let- ters, formal ceremonies and love of a good time. Devoting time to both charities and partying, Greeks on campus stick together. Go Greek. Stay Independent, but be assured that the alphabet will gain new meaning as a student at lUP. 55 Working Students: Working Your Way Through College Y 56 Finances can be a problem especially when you ' re paying for classes, meals, and luxuries. For some lUP students making ends meet means holding down a job while carrying a full load of classes. While the campus offers many work- ing opportunities, there are other stu- dents who readily seek employment at one of the many restaurants or stores nearby. Those paychecks mean an- other bag of groceries or dinner and a movie. Now if you could only find the time to enjoy all that money! Oak Grove: Campus Crossroad People seldom stop to consider how fortunate lUPers have it considering that in the midst of academia there stands the historic oak grove, inviting students and squirrels alike to cross the concrete w alkways in pursuit of some ideal. Be it several furry creatures scamper- ing aimlessly around cracker-laden coeds or harried art majors rushing towards Sprowls with the makings of a van Gogh tucked under their arm, the oak grove offers a release, a spot of green grass, sunshine and Sher- wood Forest in the midst of Notting- ham. « ••- 59 In need of cash, you hurry to the Union bank. What, another long line? Oh yeah, it ' s Friday and others, like you, are readying for the weekend. Fighting off the munchies, you head for Hardees. Great, a live group is performing for ping pong and pinball players alike. Here is the meeting hole. Whether you select a favorite album to be played in the listening room or attempt to study in the New Lounge, you will find the Union humming with activity. -?| -. . i. - 1)0 ' .MtlltBUKCIW M6MBUBCf ?y -cr Tit. There were days you never even saw each other. But you survived, feeling l ucky just to know that your loved one was at least at lUP, not 200 miles away. Do you remember the fights? Everyone had them; you weren ' t un- usual. And sometimes the make-ups afterwards made the argument seem worthwhile . . . almost. Should you grow together after grad- uation, remember the lessons you learned while sharing each other with work, classes, mutual friends. And if you part, recall that together whatever didn ' t necessarily mean forever. VV Sutton Hall: Demolition Makes Room for Reconstructed Memories It wasn ' t too long ago that John Sut- ton Hall served as a dorm. Not so many years gone by, this stately build- ing was the hub of student activity, housing both cafeteria and social areas. Today, amid recking halls and paint cans, Sutton Hall looks forward to restoration. To be redone in the Victorian period, this new home of both faculty and administration has also made way for a new library. Time has given way to changes. And Sutton ' s memories are being reconstructed in museum and gallery form. It is now for the alumni to recount just how Sutton Hail used to be. 64 w3B£s. It provides students and faculty with an opportunity to explore their rela- tionship with nature and her products that support our lives. The University Lodge is located adja- cent to the farm. The 100 acres con- tains a rustic lodge, ski hut, three picnic shelters, ski tow, toboggan run, and nature trails. All students and fac- ulty members are welcome to use the Lodge as well as various ski and hik- ing equipment provided there. 67 Area Places: Getting Away From It All ■ J. BLUE SPRUCE PARK IHOIk COUHTt 70 There are times you can ' t bear the sight of your room any longer. Campus has become so familiar and confining that you need to get away. Seeking release you head for one of the local parks. Walking barefoot through the sandy waters of Yellow Creek, you drift back to times unclut- tered by classes and homework. Still unable to face those four walls crowded with posters you continue to unwind at either Al Patti ' s or the Red Onion. As you head back to campus, assu- redly ready to face whatever may come, you glance at your reflection in some dimly lighted shop window squinting to read the sign Closed for the Evening. Perhaps these people too have decided to unwind, relax and get away from it all. 71 Town: Something for Everyone 73 74 The town of Indiana compliments the University quite well. Though it is not large, it has about everything one finds in a major city only on a much smaller scale. Larger chain-stores are set between small specialty shops that contain a variety of goods. When the town closes-up at five o ' clock, the streets are generally bare until nine o ' clock when small groups of University students head for the Coney, Wolfendale ' s, Pattis, or the Colonial. . Characterizing the crowd in Fisher Auditorium, Rubin began a journey which led to Berkeley, Washington DC, Chicago and, according to the activitist, is still going on at colleges and universities across the country. In the 60 ' s, if you liked what I had to say you would have burned the near- est ROTC building. Those closest to the stage would be the sympathizers who smoke pot and give a warhoop once in a while. J Perhaps Rubin ' s characterization of the 60 ' s was appropriate for the Fish- er crowd as various students from a crowd calling itself the New Montana Society for the Arts presented the speaker with a pig and unfurled a banner asking What Happened to the Revolution, you Bourgeois pig? Rubin ' s response was found in a ret- rospective look at the peace demon- strations and the personalities behind them.  ,■;: ■■ 129 Billy Crystal Presenting comedy in a warm and down-to-earth manner, Billy Crystal performed to a full house in Fisher Auditorium. Best known for his role as Jodie on TV ' s Soap, Crystal was well received by the lUP crowd. The evening was an enjoyable one as the comedian joked about everything from the Stephen Stills concert can- cellation to drugs and many well known figures. 130 Coretta Scott King Human rights — essential to cohabita- tion of the world and to successful foreign policy was the topic of the speech given by the wife of the late fvlartin Luther King. Advocating social change, Mrs. King feels it is impossible to overlook the importance of race and national origin when planning for- eign relations. She does not rule out the possibility of another civil rights movement such as the one experienced during the 60 ' s. But she feels the challenges of today do not lend themselves to the tactics of the past decade. We can- not go back to the past, she stated. We must move forward and we shall overcome. 131 The United States Army Band .5 . 1 ■ I 1 1 ■HWb ' myy 132 •t- VM l 0l lUPisces Synchronized Swim Show 1 I JK M 133 Football 136 137 Front: Mark Sartori. Senior linebacker Jim Haslett com- pleted his fourth brilliant year for In- diana and was selected to play in the prestigious Blue Grey Game, which featured some of the finest college players in the nation. lUP football fans are sorry to see Jim Haslett go. Coach Bill Neal, who completed his eighth and final year at the helm of the team, felt the team ' s record was a good barometer to judge our team by. The team opened the season against East Strousburg not knowing what to expect from the youthful team. De- spite chances to win in the last quar- ter, Indiana bowed, 17-3. Ed Gonzales gained 177 yards while Ken Stroup and Pat Kellar combined for 11 more as Indiana beat Kutztown 17-13. The Indians came home for ther 1978 Mill- er Stadium debut to face the defend- ing NAIA Division II champion West- minster. The fans had little to cheer for when the fourth quarter began with the Titan ' s holding a command- ing 21-7 lead. But Indiana scored on two long drives to cap a brilliant comeback for a 21-21 tie. Lock Haven followed in Westminster ' s footsteps as they quickly jumped to a 14-0 first quarter lead. lUP reeled off three unanswered touchdowns and the Indians triumped 21-14. After three straight fine games, Ship- pensburg lowered the boom on In- diana by scoring 36 points in the first half to defeat the Tribe 36-16. Indiana bounced back for the homecoming game to give the chilly fans a 28-6 victory over California. It hurt us mentally said coach Neal after the Indians dropped a heart- breaking 9-7 game to Slippery Rock. Indiana had outplayed the Rock in almost every phase of the game but bad breaks helped the Rock to dis- pose of all hopes for an Indiana divi- sion championship until 1979. lUP fol- lowed with an impressive 16-8 victory over the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg. An emotional battle next week in Edinboro kept in tradition with the Scott ' s ability to al- ways play the Indians tough, ending with Edinboro on top, 27-21. Clarion shutout lUP 17-0 in the season ' s finale. Ten of lUP ' s players received post season laurels headed by Jim Haslett as he was chosen MVP in the NAIA ' s District 18 for the second year in a row. John Link joined Haslett on the District 18 all star squad ' s first team. Along with the MVP honor, Haslett was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference ' s (ECAC) Division II first team and Kodak ' s ALL Ameri- can team. Big Indian quarterback Bob McFarland and center Bill Vail joined fullback Ken Stroup to the District 18 second team for 1978. Four Indians were named to the Pennsylvania Con- ference Western Division All Star squad. They were Haslett, Link, Vail, and defensive tackle Joe Cugliari. Garnering second team honors were wide receiver Terry Skelly, tackle John Haddad, safety Mark Sartori, linebacker Dave Tate, Stoup and McFarland. 141 The lUP golf team, coached by Ed Sloninger, closed out another ex- cellent season. The Indians finished no lower than third (three times) in any of the 11 invitationals they partici- pated in during the year. lUP opened the 1978-79 season with two con- secutive second place finishes. The remaining six tournies resulted with Indiana victories. This year, much of lUP ' s success be- longed to sophomore Kent Stauffer and senior Wayne Phillips. They have had very solid performances all year, Sloninger said. The team finished the year by racking up its fifth consecutive first place finish in the Indiana Invitational. Kent Stauffer and Andy Arthur reflected the talent of the team as they received All-American honors. 142 Golf 143 Indiana ' s Field Hockey team finished tine season with a deceiving 4-8 record. I think we played better than last year (5-4-1) said Coach Kofie Montgomery. This time we were up against tougher competition. After opening the season with a win and a loss, the Stickettes fell into a 1-5 mid- season slump. Individual skills im- proved, but the team didn ' t come to- gether. They jelled late in the year, when the girls beat Frostburg and Ju- niata with back to back 3-0 wins. Montgomery said the team ended the year playing together, which was her number one goal. The surprise of the year was fresh- man Donna Lutz, who stepped into a starting position at lUP. She played super during the season, and traveled to Washington to play in the national tournament. Lutz, P.J. Brown, Angle Evans and Sally Porter were selected to the Re- gional Pitt team. Brown is the first Indiana player to make the Pitt One squad all of her four playing years. Compiling one of the most successful slates in Sutton ' s nine season stint as head coach, the harriers won both the Glassboro and lUP Invitationals, finished first in the Pennsylvania Con- ference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 18 meets, and also topped a 23-team field in the NCAA Division II Northeast qualifier in New York City. In November, lUP hosted the 21st run- ning of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. The Indians emerged with an impressive sixth place finish in a field of 22 teams. •c V 146 : i ; ' «9 f ' ' - ■ ' sir. . - 147 148 The 1978-79 Varsity Cheerleaders cheered the Big Indians to many vic- tories. We would like to com- mend the girls for representing In- diana University of Pennsylvania with such pride and excellence. 149 Women ' s Swimming 150 ,J,dtt % ' m  —•• It was a bitter way for the lUP women ' s swim team to finish a season that had begun with so much prom- ise. The women closed the 1978-79 campaign with an 81-50 loss to Ship- pensburg, their third loss in a row. Head Coach Kofie Montgomery ' s squad opened the season with two impressive wins in December over Fairmont and Millersville. The tankers came back in January from a long Christmas break without showing a trace of a layoff in their decisive walloping of Duquesne, 102- 28. Lock Haven was the Indian ' s next victim as lUP upped its record to an unblemished 4-0. The Feb. 6 encounter with Cleveland State was Indiana ' s first setback, al- though many records were broken. Allegheny College followed and the lUP women had their last victory of the season, 84-47. 151 t L The lUP women ' s tennis team com- pleted another outstanding season with an 8-3 record. In nine years, the women netters, under Coach Eltz, have compiled a brilliant 85-16 record, including 1974 ' s 12-0 slate. This year ' s team did not seem headed for a winning season as it dropped three of its first four matches. But the gals pulled together to win their last seven games. At the Pennsylvania State Ath- letic Conference Tennis Champion- ships, the netters had a fine showing. Patti Marcantino took third place in first singles, and Beth Cinelli made it to the semis at second singles. 152 Women ' s Tennis - jjbMkJKJ I Front Bissell, Spmelli- Second: Marcantino. There were several games where our opponents had fourteen points on us and we kept fighting to come back. I can honestly say I never saw anyone give up while they were playing. Barthelemy will be losing four ex- perienced seniors to graduation. Ka- ren Borowski. Susie Reese, and Co- Captains Sharon Aimsworth and Mindy Saintz have all played their last game for lUP. ' These girls were the leaders this year, Barthelemy said. I am very sorry to see them go. 155 Five of Coach Ralph Johnson ' s swim- mers earned Ail-American honors this year. They were Dan Deacon, Andres Arraez Caracus, Kim Tyson, Keith McQueston, and Bic Murphy. The five qualified for the nationals held in Northern Michigan, where they placed sixteenth in a field of 44 teams in the 800 relay freestyle. Deacon be- came the first lUP swimmer ever to be a national champ. The junior won the 200 yard backstroke. 156 Men ' s Swimming Men ' s Basketball 158 161 The 1978-79 Big Indians finished the year with an 11-12 record. It marked only the second time in thirteen years that the Braves had finished under the .500 mark, but this year could have been different. The season began on a sour note when sophomore star Sam Scott in- jured an ankle in preseason and only saw action in three games before he was reinjured and out for the year. No one picked up the scoring slack for Scott and the Indians lost six of their nine games. Following two excellent performances in their own Christmas tournament, the Braves again hit the skids, losing four in a row. Then came the emergence of Lethal Levis and with them a glimmer of hope as the Braves reeled off five straight wins to reach the even mark for the first time since early Decem- ber. The team faltered again, though, losing to Lock Haven by a two-point margin, their sixth setback by a field goal or less, and the hopes of salvag- ing a winning season faded away. The Braves should be tough next year, as they graduate only three players; Dan Hurley, Bill Cashaw, and Tim Skelley. 163 The women ' s basketball team finished the season with a 12-12 record. Coach Lois Clark ' s squad began the season with an experienced crew, in- cluding all of last years starters. But the team never found its groove, as they traded win for loss for much of the season. The only hot streak put together was at the close of the year, when the Indians won four of their last five. The season ended with an impressive come from behind victory over Duquesne. Terri Piatek led the squad with 32 points, a career high, as lUP won, 73-71. Front, C Saponaro, L. Goudy. K Truxal, K. Tyke. D. Roland, A. Probst. Second: M. Ferren, K. Mulligan, S, Ochs, M. Wood, J. Credit is due to the Big Indian wres- tlers for finishing the 78-79 season 4- 8; for the first time placing two lUP wrestlers at the NCAA Division 1 East- ern Regionals at Virginia Tech; and for sending four lUP matmen to the NAIA Conference Championships hosted by West Liberty in Wheeling, West Virginia. Coach June Korab, who finished her last year of coaching, and second year student coach Mike Cillo were pleased with the team ' s performance. In six years of competition, the squad ' s record is 27-24. The team will only graduate two seniors, Cathy Hayes and Deb Bervinchak. 0 % The lUP fencing teams combined for a 5-13 record this year. The men ' s team recorded three of the five vic- tories, beating California, Penn State Fayette, and Montgomery Community College en route to a 3-4 record. The fruits of these extended versions of the univer- sity are free to ripen and mature as most students transfer to Indiana after two years at the centers. Kittanning, offering students a chance to complete either an associate de- gree in criminology or business, per- mits students to leave school after only two years. Students who have shared branch campus life have a small sense of community but most look forward to not being separated from all the main campus activities. For those who don ' t start in Indiana, a branch campus is a great way to break into college life. -J« !f5 , 262 i r.n a r jv KA f 0 J ,?RIDE OF ' fSi KITTANN.. Housed in the town library Phil waits patiently to see his shadow and to get a day ' s worth of attention in both newspapers and on television. But there is something equally as im- pressive in Punxsy and that is lUP ' s branch campus located here. Roll- icking good times are shared by the small number of students who begin their college experience here. But they, like main campus enrollees know all about bookin ' , parties, and lasting friendships. The fruits of this branch wait anxiously to be tried and tested in Indiana. New careers, friends, and places are just at the horizon for each to explore. 314 •r- . - ¥. l.l ' idf ' : ■ ■■• ■ j- ' ' «ii , ' ' ■ t ' l ,,..: ' ■■■..■:.■ ' : ' ■ ■■■-■■ ' ■ ;! .,.: -.?K t-?
