A university is comprised of its people. We are grouped under the name lUP, yet we remain individuals. We pursue our own interests with a magnitude that is only limited by ourselves. Probably among our most cherished memories of dorm life are the half-mile hike to the bathroom, the deafening blare of the stereo next door, the beer that had to be hidden from the counselor, the times we got locked out, the fire drills w hile w e were in the shower, and the drunken visitors that pounded on our door at 2 A.M. Through it all we met people who, in later years, will be mere acquaint- enances and others who will remain our closest friends. We learn how easy it is to live with some people and what a chore it is to co-exist with others. Most of all, we learn a lot about living with ourselves. f f JJ ' zi s r Vf— 1 a 20 w 7 21 After freshman year, you can ' t take it anymore. Living in a 3x5 room that served as living room, bedroom, kitch- en and who knows what else was just unheard of. So you move off campus to a place of your own. Closet spac e, meals when you please, but, who used all the hot water? And bills come every month instead of once a semes- ter. But you don ' t mind because you ' re really on your own and making it work. 22 ilm Apartments: Dormitory Plus Off-campus Houses: Pleasant Living for lUP Students 24 After a year or so in the dorms, many students decide that dormitory living is more of a hassle than a con- venience. So after v eeks of looking and phoning landlords durmg the Spring semester, usually an opening turns up for Fall. Off-campus houses, owned by local residents, furnish students with a unique living experience. It is a type of living which a student lives away from school and in a family-type situ- ation. The houses give students more privacy than apartments or dormi- tories. If a student doesn ' t particularly like cafeteria food, he can eat what he chooses to cook in his own kitchen. Offering a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, off-campus houses serve as a pleas- ant type of living to lUP students. 25 Commuters: lUP ' s Traveling Students St They are seen pouring onto campus early in the morning by all modes of transportation — car, truck, motorcycle, and plain old walking. The commuters make up a large portion of lUP ' s student population. This year the commuting student ' s organization, the Off-Campus Student League, opened a new lounge in the basement of Stewart Hall. This provides a place for the commuter to relax between classes in a comfortable atmosphere. i 26 28 Working Students: Earnings Finance Education 3ii ' In order to help finance their education, many lUP students tal e part-time jobs over the course of the year. Some work at off-campus businesses as delivery boys, file clerks and waitresses, while others are involved in the Federal Work Study Program. These students are em- ployed on the lUP campus as cafeteria workers, library aides, office clerks, tu- tors and drivers of University owned ve- hicles. Most working students have mixed emo- tions about their jobs. Some claim that they only tolerate working because it supplies them with spending money, while others look on their jobs as a way of developing social contacts. Too, there are those who actually enjoy the work itself. 29 Married Students: More than Friends, Closer than Roommates In addition to the day to day routine of classes, meetings and unending extra activities, some lUP students have accepted another responsibility — marriage. And trying to juggle a job, school, and still find time to de- velop a lasting relationship takes a lot of hard work. Not to mention rushing through dinners, cramming for tests and debating who cleans the apart- ment and empties the trash. But that doesn ' t sound so terribly different from all the other students on campus. We ' re just permanent room- mates. 31 Branch Campuses: The Beginning but not the End 33 After graduation, besides memories of their experiences at lUP ' s main campus, many former students will take with them the memories from a year, or two years spent at one of lUP ' s branch campuses. lUP operates two branch campuses: the Punxsu- tawney branch, which opened in 1962; and the Kittaning, or Armstrong County Campus, which opened in 1963. Together, the Punxy and Kitty branches serve approximately 900 students. Both have many extra- curricular activities available to their students, such as movies, annual semi-formal dances and intramural sports. Also, each campus has its own Student Government Association and Student Union, where much of the social life takes place. So you rear- range your schedule and prepare for the long wait to get into the arena. After eliminating the courses that are closed, you find that the only profs left are those you were warned not to take or TBA ' s. N-ow it ' s back to wait- ing in line and hoping that your courses won ' t close before you get to the terminal. Naturally, you ' ll go through in one try — unless, of course, you forgot to add up your credits, your times conflict or the computer says your Social Security number doesn ' t exist. After all this, it ' s hard to smile for the l-card picture, but take heart! The semester has just begun and there ' s 14 weeks ahead for improvement. 41 i ; A -t J. . J A Imagine this: It is 3:25 A.M. and you have just awakened from a sound sleep to find that your roommate is no longer in bed and has mysteriously dis- appeared. You panic, wondering if your roomie has been carried off by a band of gypsies, or perhaps run away from home and you ' ll never see him, her, or it again. And then, you calm yourself as it dawns on you that, no, nothing terrible has happened. Your roommate is just pulling an all-night- er. Now, if you only knew where . . . This scene is a common one at lUP, because passing required courses is necessary for graduation. Most stu- dents find that study is essential — at least once in a while. So they study — quietly in the room or for fifteen min- utes in the laundry room waiting for the rinse cycle to end. They study in the morning, in the afternoon, or frantically cram all night. Some use lounges or the library to study, while others pick more unorthodox locales like in the dining hall or under a tree in the Oak Grove. But, wherever, whenever, or however, all lUP stu- dents go through the long, lonely hours of study. v VH rii liM I H H k ( study: The Long and Lonely Hours 43 Finals: A Last Chance to Salvage the Semester . Parents send care packages, residence halls offer coffee and donuts, and local pharmacies sell out of No-Doz. It ' s the bottom of the ninth inning and you ' re doing your best to salvage the game! The mid- night oil burns until the wee hours of the morning and then . . . you hope for the best 45 Grades: Success or Failure Spelled Out MUM! TUASiKUl! 46 You hear that the final grades are posted — should you go look, or wait until your report card is sent home? The anticipation is killing you; you have to go. Slowly you climb the stairs and tighten your damp fists. The sound of your footsteps echo in the long, dark hallway. At last you stand before the bulletin board searching for your social security number among many others. Hmm . . . there are a lot of C ' s and D ' s . . . here is your number . . . thank God, kid, you have a B. 47 Everybody parties don ' t they? It ' s hard to survive at lUP if you don ' t let go sometime. Booking all week really wears you out, so come the week-end it is time to treat yourself to a little excitement and relaxation. If you ' re a heavy partier, there ' s never a week night you can ' t find a party. No one ' s ever turned down for a few beers or whatever on Frat Row. If you don ' t get into frat parties, there ' s always a good party at an off-campus house or apartment. Whatever your par- tying needs, you ' re always satisfied at lUP. Partying: You ' re Always Satisfied at lUP Breakaway: Finding a Place for Recreation and Thought 50 Sometimes it seems that studying, people, and life In general can really get you down. You have to get out, but the Union just isn ' t the answer A good work-out at the Field House isn ' t what you have in mind either. Where can you get away? Many students find the answer to this question in some of the attractive areas surrounding Indiana. Many wooded sections with streams and lakes provide a place for recreation and thought. Getting-away always makes school and life more bearable. 51 52 New Buildings: Zink and Stouffer Opened 54 ■ . .-{ h - ■ xt:. 56 Open for Instruction for the first time during tfie 1977-78 year were two new buildings, Zink Hall and Stouffer Hall. Zink Hall, named for Dr. Norah E. Zink, Professor Emeritus of tfie Geog- raphy Department, is located behind the Memorial Fieldhouse It is lU s newest Health and Physical Education structure. Replacing facilities for women ' s sports formerly housed in Waller Gym, Zink features an Olym- pic-sized pool, two gymnasiums, spe- cially equipped rooms for Physical Therapy and Measurement of Human Sports Performance, and a Dance Studio Theatre, as well as office space. Stouffer Hall, named for George A. W. Stouffer, a former Dean of the School of Education, completes lUPs Educational Complex. Con- nected to Davis Hall, Stouffer houses the Departments of Education, Educa- tional Psychology, Media and Guid- ance. v). 57 lUP ' s Student Union was built with funds from tfie student activity fee. The Union is a favorite place for stu- dents to study. Many student service offices are located in the Union along with lounges, a music center, and a hall for table tennis and billiards. This year a Hardee ' s was installed in the downstairs of the Union to provide a place for students to buy a snack or a complete meal. r 59 ' ••T- ' ' iiiirT ' ' Cafeteria: We Complain but Don ' t Starve 60 ■• ' W :: s,;s i - . „ .„ ;« rt   ' « ? « tf The meals aren ' t exactly gourmet, but then, this Is college! Where else could you tind scrumptious platters such as El Ranchero Steak, Beef Noodle Au Grautin, Fish Newburg, Chicken Chicketti and Bacon Rarebit on Toast? The soft ice cream melts in the dish before you get to your seat, the Pepsi machines always run out when you ' re the thirstiest, the salad bowl yields more water than lettuce and the guard at the door forces you to walk halfway around the building to exit. We complain a lot, but somehow we manage not to starve . . . there ' s al- ways the pizza place and the quick- shopper right around the corner! 61 Town: Something That Never Seems to Change I I 63 64 65 Couples: Things Come Better in Twos | 66 iS- ' ' S -w. m i Ever since Noah ' s Ark, man knew that things come better in twos. Having a better half makes many long, hard days go faster. Often a smile or a hug is all one needs to get through a day. The emotional bond shared by two people in a relationship helps each one grow and mature individually as well as together. Sharing oneself with a special person makes the hard times easier and the good times bet- ter. 67 John Sutton Hall: lUP ' s Oldest Building Restored llfcJLB During the 1977-1978 term, John Sui- ton Hall regained its former status as the acknowledged center of Campus activities. The oldest building on Campus, John Sutton Hall was opened for student use on May 17, 1875 and was named in honor of the first President of the Board of Trustees. Throughout the years, John Sutton Hall served a variety of pur- poses, from providing dormitory space to offices. However, as the building aged, many state and univer- sity officials began to question its use- fullness. Then, after the State Depart- ment of Property and Supplies, which controlled the titles of all state build- ings, declared that the floors in Sut- ton could not support more than 20 pounds per square inch. Governor Shapp ordered it demolished in 1975. However, many of lUP ' s students, fac- ulty and alumni, as well as individuals from the community, were chagrined at the historic building ' s impending destruction, and banded together to prevent its loss. Forming a Save Sut- ton Committee, these individuals held demonstrations to gain support, raised funds by distributing Sutton Buttons, and convinced the National Trust for Historic Preservation to add John Sutton Hall to its National Regis- ter of Historic Places. Then, the Save Sutton Committee hired an indepen- dent firm to redetermine Sutton ' s structural stability. When its study was completed, refuting the State ' s origi- nal findings of insufficient structural support, Governor Shapp rescinded the demolition order and the Board of Trustees voted to save Sutton. Reno- vations were begun and were com- pleted this year after much research in order to authentically restore Sut- ton Hall to its original Victorian ap- pearence. The entire building was re- wired and plastered, crumbling brick- work was replaced and the interior finished with antique chandeliers and fixtures, many of which were saved from the old Thomas Sutton Hall. Af- ter escaping near-destruction, John Sutton Hall has become primarily an office building for faculty and adminis- tration, as well as housing the Presi- dent ' s residence and the President ' s and Vice President ' s offices. The day was rainy, windy and unusually cold, but it did not prevent anyone from being as enthusias- tic as ever. The parade flowed as smoothly as the rain. Beautiful floats were created, bands from all over the area performed, and almost every organ- ization on campus participated in one way or another. Chanting girls and smil- ing faces made one forget the dreari- ness of the weather. The traditional crowning of the homecoming queen oc- curred during half of the lUP — Edinboro football game. Not enough can be said for the lUP team who battled the inclem- ent weather and mud to fight for a 3-3 tie. Every Friday, the Activi- ties Board sponsors a TGIF coffee- house in the Union to enable students to get their weekend off to a good sounding start. 117 Andre Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The Pittsburgh Symphony Orches- tra, under the direction of inter- nationally known conductor Andre Previn, appeared in concert at lUP on Saturday, October 1, 1977, in Fisher Auditorium. The Symphony, beginning its second half-century as a per- forming organization, appeared at lUP through the co-sponsorship of the lUP School of Fine Arts and the In- diana Arts Council, under a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Its director, the Berlin-born Pre- vin, has served as guest conductor for most of the world ' s major sym- phonies, including those in Amster- dam, Berlin, Chicago, Cleveland, Co- penhagen, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Prague, and Rome. He became the director of the Pittsburgh Symphony in September of 1976, succeeding William Steinberg, after having previously served as mu- sic director for the Houston Sym- phony Orchestra and Principal Con- ductor of the London Symphony. 118 La Boheme 119 120 ■ f ■. David Frost My most memorable moments come from interviews, particularly political interviews. 122 Noted television personality David Frost, spoke at lUP on October 13, 1977. He recounted many of his inter- views but the crowd was most inter- ested in his recent interviews with Richard Nixon. Frost claims that he doesn ' t under- stand Nixon any better now than prior to his interviews. Nixon has a Mind- boggling definition of presidential powers. Commenting on Nixon ' s openness during the interviews. Frost added that at times he went further than I expected. There was a total bedrock of emotion and reality with him when he talked about his life hav- ing no purpose . After a long question-answer period. Frost concluded by saying, Someone once said television is an instrument whereby you are entertained by people in your living room by people you wouldn ' t have in your house. 123 odd Rund ren ,- ! +r J Jl -f.;; , : r- m Si i ? An unusual show was incorporated with the concert. Based on an Egyp- tian theme, the stage included a 15 foot pyramid with an 18-foot sphinx. Back: Coach Neal. 133 With a 4 - 4 - 1 record, the 1977 football season was a season of ups and downs for lUP. Beginning the season on an optimistic note, Coach Bill Neal ' s Indians won their season opener against Juniata, 14 — 7, in an exciting contest undecided until the final minutes. Following another win against a young Wilkes College team, lUP was dealt its first loss of the sea- son by Westminster, the then-reigning NAIA Division II champions. West- minster took advantage of four fum- bles and an extremely inadequate rushing game to beat the Indians 21 — 6. However, in the first conference game of the year, lUP rallied against Shippensburg late in the final quarter to win, 16 — 14. Highlighting the Ship- pensburg contest was the return of lUP ' s Ail-American defensive end, Jim Haslett, after recovering from a bro- ken thumb. A week later, the Indians did their part in the Homecoming fes- tivities to achieve their first tie, 3 — 3, with Edinboro. Both excessively rainy weather and several penalties served to hinder the Indian ' s in the Home- coming game. The winning spirit con- tinued to elude the Indians as, once again, they failed to win, being de- feated 15 — 12 by an undefeated Clar- ion team. Their sec ond loss of the season, the Clarion game totally elimi- nated lUP ' s chances of winning the Pennsylvania Conference Champion- ship. The following week lUP lost again to Slippery Rock, 15 — 10, again, in the final moments of play. However, lUP managed to get back on a winning track against California. Amassing 374 yards rushing, the In- dians left California with a 47 — 7 win. Then, in the season ' s finale, once again the Indians were over come in the last quarter, this time by Lock Haven, to lose 18 — 16. Thus, the Indians wrapped up the season with a 4 — 4 — 1 record. However, season highlights also included several hon- ors for players. All-Americans junior defensive end Jim Haslett and Senior linebacker Gregg Schmidt were named to the Pittsburgh Press, NAIA and Pennsylvania Conference — Western Division (PC) All Star Squads. Also among lUP ' s All-Ameri- cans were Pat Imbrogno, Leroy Young and John Mihota. Haslett was also named District Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Press and NAIA Dis- trict 18 MVP. Also, senior defensive 134 back Ray West made the Pittsburgh Press team and was a choice for both NAIA and PC second teams. Senior defensive tackle Cliff Simmons was selected for all three second teams and senior defensive back Dan Ken- ney was a Pittsburgh Press second team choice, as well. 135 The lUP cross country team cap- ped an outstanding season with a sixth place finish in the NAIA national meet and a third place tie in the NCAA national meet. The third place finish qualified the team for All-American hon- ors, and, in that same meet, lUP senior Dick Wolf finished 11th individually, good enough to be All-American, also. One other post-season honor for lUP was that of head coach Lou Sutton, who coached the team to its sec- ond consecutive 8-0 dual meet record, being selected NCAA District 2 Coach of the Year. The district includes six states. lUP was also the Indiana Invitational winner, the state meet champion, and the NAIA District 18 cham- pion. 136 Cross Country Front: Coach Fry. The lUP soccer team opened up a winning season by defeating Frostburg, 3-2. De- spite inclement weather, the Indians, under Coach Vince Celtnicks, managed to pull out their first victory. Following another win, 6-0 over UPJ, the Indians shut out Alliance College, 8-0. Other season high- lights included two more shut outs, 2-0 against Behrend, and 2-0 against Edinboro, both credited to strong defensive maneu- vers. lUP was then dealt its first loss of the season against Kutztown, 2-1, in the Pepsi- Cola Game of the Week. Losses to Ship- pensburg and Lock Haven followed. Clos- ing out the season, lUP defeated Slippery Rock, Gannon, and Pitt. Advancing to the NAIA District 18 playoffs, lUP was at last laid to rest in a snowstorm by Frostburg 3- 1. The season ended with an 11-3 record. Front: Coach Celtnicks. Shaw. Shinn. Cannpbell. Under Coach Sullinger ' s leadership, the In- dian Stickettes won their season opener, 1 — 0, against Pitt. In their next game, however, they were not as lucky, losing to a strong Slippery Rock team. After a crucial penalty, lUP faltered and the game ended, 3 — 2, in Slippery Rock ' s favor. Then, after losing again, to nationally third-ranked Lock Haven, the Stickettes struck back to achieve a 3 — 1 victory over Juniata. After hosting a tri-meet with the Pittsburgh and Center County Clubs, lUP wrapped up its season at the Slippery Rock Invitational, earning a 1 — 1 — 1 record for the meet. Early in season competition, the team appeared invincible, as lUP re- mained undefeated at 4-0. Quality team performance declined sharply, causing three straight losses for the team. The remainder of the season was characterized by unpredictable victories and defeats. The overall team record now stands at 64-28 for the past nine seasons. The spikers are now looking to next season. Confidence can be seen in the JV squad. All season long they were an emotional team. When they were psy- chologically up they played as well as any team in the league. 143 The lUP women ' s tennis team finished the 1977 season with a 9-3 record. Coach Mary Louise Eltz, who has an overall 77-13 record in her eight years of coaching the team at lUP, said she was dis- appointed in the season, but not from the standpoint of the players ' performances. I was really disappointed in the weather more than anything else. We rarely had to cancel practices, but it always seemed to rain on the days of matches. The team lost only to West Virginia once and to Pitt twice during the season, and Eltz contends much of the blame should go toward the relatively easy schedule her team played. The competition we play isn ' t strong enough for us, she said. We beat the other teams easily, but when we play Pitt and West Virginia, we ' re not fully prepared. So next year we ' re hoping to schedule some tougher oppo- nents. 144 Women ' s Tennis m i Front: Splnelli, Reeside. This left the tribe ' s record at ten wins against nine loses. The team exhibited a fine defensive effort throughout the season. Although the team had an average year, much experience was had by younger players to insure a successful season for 1978-79. 147 1-a r? Women ' s Swimming The lUP women ' s swim team, in only its second season of competition, posted an impressive record of 8-4 in dual meet competition this season. Having placed fifth in the Pennsylvania Conference In- vitational, the youth-laded swim team had eight members competing in the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIW) Regionals at Penn State. What the team lacked in experience, the members made up in enthusiasm. Gray, Cooper; In is 154 Men ' s Swimming The lUP men ' s swim team completed their dual meet season with a win over Bloomsburg. It ' s the end of a so-so season, commented Coach Ralph Johnson. A so-so season it was as the Indians compiled a 4-3 record. Wins also were recorded over Young- stown, Grove City, and Slippery Rock. The swimmers, however, were out scored by Fairmont, Shippensburg, and Penn State. 80 155 S Women ' s Gymnastics The lUP women ' s gymnastics team began its fifth season of competition with a young, promising squad, under the coaching of June Korab. Due to constant injuries, the 78 squad was able to compile only a 2-6 mark on the season. Comprised of six freshman, five sophomores, one junior, and one senior, the youth of this year ' s team was quite evident. Coach Carl Davis ' s lUP basketball team had won only seven games during the previous season, and with only two starters returning, things did not look good for much of an improvement on that rare losing season. After the first ten games, the Indians had surprised a few people by sporting a 5-5 record, including a big conference win over a talented Cali- fornia squad opening night. The In- dians became the Cinderella team of District 18. Winning the next six games, including wins over Clarion, Westminster, UPJ, and Edinboro, the Indians wound up the season by win- ning a first-round playoff game against Point Park before losing to Clarion and being eliminated. The rest of the season was one of ups and downs as the Indians grappled with some very tough and nationally ranked opponents. End- ing the regular season with a 7-6 record, the wrestlers also partici- pated in post season tournaments. ( . k-Xm. 165 Track The lUP track team turned in another successful record during the 1978 season. A 7-1 dual meet mark was compiled with a fourth place finish in the Pennsylvania Conference Cham- pionships. The squad gained much experience during the 1978 season, posting a 4-3 mark. Next year, many of the starters will return and chances for a highly successful year are certain. 170 171 lUP was blessed with maybe one of the best golf teams in the North- eastern United States during its 1977-1978 season, according to Head Coach Ed Sloniger. Beginning the fall season with a first place finish at the Pitt Invitational, the Indians went on to finish first at the ECAC Qualifier and second at the Gannon Invitational. Following a fourth place finish at the Madison Tournament and a second at the Youngstown Invitational, lUP finished second in the Eastern Cham- pionships. After a winter lull, the Tribe opened for business again by placing seventh in the Miami Invitational and third in the Wooster Invitational. lUP then captured another first place in the UPJ Invitational and followed up with second place finishes at the West Liberty Invitational (tie) and the Champion Lakes Invitational. After placing third at California State, In- diana placed first in the Pennsylvania State College Conference. Led by Co- Captains Bob Ravis and Rich Fink, lUP ' s golfers also managed to achieve a 5-0-1 record during the year in dual meets. lUP then closed its season af- ter hosting, and winning the lUP In- vitational, and traveling to Florida Southern University for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tour- nament. Strengthening the 77-78 In- dians were the performances of team members Wayne Phillips, Bob Kreider, Kent Stauffer, Scott Statler a nd Ail- American Scott Arthur, as well as Fink and Ravis, who achieved an Honor- able Mention on the NCAA All-Ameri- can Team. 172 ... Under head coach Arch Moore, lUP was a lead- er in the NCAA Division II standings in its pitching department. Leading the Tribe staff was junior Steve Schubert who, after getting off to a poor start by losing his first three games, came back to win his next four starts. Dur- ing that time he allowed only one run and put together a streak of 25 con- secutive scoreless innings. Coach Moore can smile broadly about Schu- bert, as well as the rest of his pitching staff since he knows that he will have the services of all eight once again next year. The Class of 1978 parted from lUP to begin their careers and to make their dreams come true. Many passed through the Oak Grove once more to relive the Impressions that were made four years ago, by the friendly squirrels, the sturdy trees that seem to be ageless, and the first en- counter with John Sutton Hall. It was then that the Sutton Experience be- gan. The Sutton Experience is a con- glomeration of many experiences — the dormitories, English II papers, frat parties, the Colonial on Thursday nights, pulling all nighters, long lines at registration, 8 o ' clock classes, and many, many more. The experience in- cludes crying — tears brought about by hurt and failure, but also as a result of laughing and being made happy. The Sutton Experience is some- thing only lUP students can under- stand and appreciate.
