In the Northwood game Lynn Hieber passed former lUP record holder Micky Watson for attempts by an Indian quarterback in % career. Hieber ' s 24 attempts gave him a career total of 431 surpassing Watson ' s total of 426. The Cortland game was the last in a series with lUP winning all six games. In this game Hieber was inter- cepted for the first time in the season and Tom Alper was one-for-two in his field goal attempts for the season. Don Kenny recorded his second interception of the year in the game against Slippe ry Rock. The lUP all-time total offensive yardage record was broken by Lynn Hieber whose total of 4,038 broke Wally Blanca ' s 3,861. The first lose of the season came with the Edinboro game with Lynn Hieber hitting 10 of 23 passes. Green, a 210- pound junior from Edinboro, smashed the lUP defense which was allowing only 88.7 yards per game rushing during the first three games. The last game between Westminster and Indiana proved to be an exciting grid-iron, non-league clash. Len Pesotini set a school record for the most interceptions by a receiver in a single game and Alper punched a 36-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the game. Entering the season with a 23-game winning streak against Pennsylvania Conference opponents. Slippery Rock fell hard to the lUP victory. Both teams scored all points in the first half, with little happening in the second half and a final score of 13-9. The only concilation the Indians had for their attempt at breaking the Homecoming jinx was a 16-16 tie score against Clarion. This tie nearly eliminated lUP from the Pennsylvania Conference title. Hieber however, broke a school record with 340 yards passing. Two more school records were also set by Len Pesotini by catching seven passes to bring his season total to 49 through the first six games and 707 yards on reception. These figures sur- passed the 1965 record of 47 catches and 655 yards set by Gary Milanovich. ■UP 34 10 19 21 16 16 13 35 59 49 Northwood Cortland Shippensburg Edinboro Westminster Clarion Slippery Rock California Lock Haven Kutztown OPP 14 7 28 14 16 9 26 7 10 43 44 45 46 • •:: H.;: i:: :: 47 mSj ■ ■«•■ u 48 J VrCV ' r 49 50 mm 51 52 CROSS COUNTRY Row 1: I to r: Don Freedline, Dick Wolfe, Kim Burke, Mark Noll, Dan Cunkelman, Dan Friedrich, Bob Costello Row 2: I to r: )oel Sprague, Mike Higgins, Mike Carbon, )oe Schuler, Andy Phieff, Steve Ceveris, Ken Trilli Row 3: I to r: Coach Lou Sitton, Todd Etshman, Dave Meyers, )im Booth, Mike Robins, Don Gannassi, George Cline, Todd Boiler, Asst. Cunkelman, who up until this meet was Indiana ' s most consistent runner, finished 16th overall and lUP ' s Dick Wolfe finished sec- ond behind Slippery Rock ' s first place runner. This meet however, placed Slippery Rock and Indiana in equal balance. Slippery Rock beating lUP once and lUP beating Slippery Rock once within the past two years. Indiana placed 2nd at the Penn-Ohio meet with five of 20 top runners. The Indians finished just behind Malone 50-51, who they beat earlier in the season at the Malone Invitational. At the California Invitational Cunkelman finished 12th, first among the Indiana runners. Pitt who won the meet, grouped together and lUP was unable to close the gap, coming away with a 3rd. At the Malone Invitational lUP ' s Dan Friedrich took second and Dan Cunlelman, one of lUP ' s top runners took fourth, aiding Indiana in a 2nd place. The Indianas continued their upward movement taking 1st at the lUP Invitational, with six runners in the top 20. This was an important meet because the team had to win one invitational to be eligible for the national meet. The team ' s easiest race of the year was against Grove City, who had only one top runner in the second place. Leading the way for the Indians was Joel Sprague and rounding out the top five positions were Mark Noll, Dave Thompson and Ken Trilli. lUP OPP 15 Frostburg 50 15 Duqoesne 50 15 St. Francis 50 22 Pitt-)ohnston 37 15 Lock Haven 50 32 Slippery Rock 31 32 Clarion 99 32 Shippensburg 116 19 Grove City 43 California Invitational 3rd Malone Invitational 2nd lUP Invitational 1st Penn-Ohio Meet 2nd PSCAC 4th NCAA Division II National Championship 10th FENCING 56 Row 5: I to r: Lawrence Karg, John Liebenguth, Bob Stover, Andy Horton, Barry Fehrle, Al Broadbent Row 4: I to r: Dan Losego, )oe Flecher, Mike Webb, Jeff March, Rick Suscewicz, Straut Law, Marty Leonard Row 3: I to r: Tom Klingensnnith, Raymond Koker, Steve Showalter, Tom Grego, Ken Burke, Mike Chopp, Larry Pentz, Moses Tesi Row 2: I to r: )ose Nieto, Don Fletcher, Dale DeGour, Bob Campbell, Joe Babrizio, Gary Kazor, Steve Wilkinson, Ralph Marona, Scot Fritz Row 1: I to r: Coach Vince Celtnieks, Barb Briner - mgr., John Stenken - asst., Nancy Derbyshire - mgr., Bob Juskewick - asst. 57 9 . - ■ , 1P 58 I ► ■«f . The team led by Coach Ralph Johnson did well in championship com- petition winning the 1975 Indiana Relays and finishing third in the Pennsylvania State Conference Meet. This was the first time an Indiana swimming team has finished in the top three teams of the conference. This year the team had seven members who qualified for the NCAA Division 11 Championship Meet, led by cap- tains Erik Hangeland and Doug Bennick. PENNSYLVANIA 15701 THE PEESIDENT To the student body: For the graduating seniors, the OAK chronicles your senior year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and will evoke memories of a particularly significant period of your life. For the rest of the student body, the OAK portrays life at lUP and suggests what may be expected for the remainder of your time here. Since I arrived on campus last fall at the same time as the incoming freshmen I have enjoyed with them the experience of becoming acquainted with the lUP community, its proud heritage and bright expectations as it embarks on a new century. I am grateful to all students for your cooperation in making my first year such an enjoyable one. I look forward to seeing the graduating seniors maintaining an active interest in lUP and returning frequently to our campus. Sincerely, Robert C . Wilburn President 18 PEOPLE WHO NEED PEOPLE ARE THE LUCKIEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ' You grope for a sense of belonging at a university of 12,000 faces. Faces with a mirage of messages caught in a mirage of activities But you are an individual, a somebody, you live, breath, feel, you make a difference now. So you join the group . YOU write the article, YOU take the picture, YOU plan the trip, organize the rally, direct the performance, keep the team winning. YOU aren ' t going to sit back and party four years of college away, YOU ' LL do more than go to classes (some- times), eat, sleep - exist. You ' re alive, enthusias- tic, and you let people know it. If you ' re the member, the president, the chair- man, the captain, the editor, you make your mark extended in a group effort. You try to promote in-group solidarity, it ' s hard work, but it ' s tun play also. Sometimes you wonder if it ' s worth all the effort. Ycru ask yourself, What have I got to gain other than something that will fill the white space on my resume? So you grope, you join, you participate, you lead and your purpose becomes clear. We are accountable only to ourselves for what happens to us in our lives. We must realize that we have a choice: we are responsible for our own good time. When you stop trying to get from people what they can ' t give you, you can begin to enjoy what they can offer. People can share whole worlds with each other but first they must have access to their own. - from How To Be Your Own Best Friend .ifK ' . fl • .- ■■■■ ■ ■ J ' ' • I -•dS-jiA ' , ■ nmfifl EK .r-  fi.?. _r«o %M -4 7 : ■ T .. • X NEWMAN CENTE Newman Staff; I r. In the past year Phi Sigma Kappa has grown to be one of the largest fraternities on campus, with 78 brothers. At Homecoming they were presented with an honorable mention in the Dean ' s Cup Competition; the first time such a distinction was made because of the closeness of the competition. Community service ranked high on the list of Phi Sigma Kappa priorities as they collected over $8,000 for groups such as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Ebensburg State Hospital and the Open Door. Hopefully, next year will show the continued progress and growth of Phi Sigma Kappa. 146 THETA CHI Presently consisting of 67 active brothers, the Epsilon Eta chapter of the Theta Chi fraternity was founded in 1957. Again this year, Theta Chi served the community contributing to the Big Brother — Big Sister program through their annual marathon Ihe contribution comprised 85% of their annual budget. In intramurals it remains amtjng the tof) ten consistently. Many brothers are and have been contributing to lUP ' s football, soccer, tennis and wrestling teams. Since its organization in the 1920 ' s the lUP Marching Band has been an ever-changing organization. This year, under the direction of Frank Dillard, assisted by Gary Orner and Charles Spicer, the band added flag and rifle teams, majorettes, and the first female Field Conductor in its history, Gayle Kubelick, to its ranks. Its 120 members perform at all home games, two away games, guest appearances at several high schools, pep rallies. Freshman Orientation, weekly post game concerts, the Homecoming parade, and the annual Bands in Revue Concert. If your roommate happened to be a member of the band you could be assured of several things: 1) When you arrived in September the room belonged to your roomie already and you were just visiting for a year. 2) There would always be a supply of white shoe polish, muddy shoes, dirty pants, and sweaty shirts in the closet. 3) You knew where he would be from 4:10-6:00 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from the beginning of school until Thanksgiving vacation. 4) Fie would acquire an ever-changing and vastly larger vocabulary before the end of the season. 5) And above all, regardless of how you felt after the party Friday night, he would be sure to get you up and out of bed when he left for rehearsal at 7:15 Saturday morning. 154 ALPHA PHI The Delta Phi chapter of Alpha Phi was founded at lUP in 1965.
