It is a stimulant and a depres- sant with all the toxicity of any chemical. Music is so greatly diverse and variable, in essence all things to all men. We have reached a time when the universality of music is so vital to life — personally and socially. From the tribal rituals of primitive natives to Carnegie Hall and the Pittsburgh Sym- phony, the creative urges of man ' s innermost self have found expression in musical forms. In America, music has become a hobby for many, and more than a mere form of entertainment for most. We, as college students, are especially in- volved in contemporary music, and we find release, relaxation, reflection and oft times grim reality as we listen to the sounds of today. Subconsciously, our reactions in certain situations may be muted or intensified via the song playing on the juke or radio. Obviously, too, certain music affects certain moods. Believe it or not, in these developing years of col- lege life, music can even be a significant factor in the total balance of our personalities. If nothing else, though, at least we can reflect on the memo- ries of dances, parties, and pizza parlors with the rhythm and rhyme of recorded music setting th atmosphere for (hopefully) a good time. ' s 1973 football sea- son. When the Indians took the field in September against Eastern Ken- tucky they had hopes of securing the school ' s 12th straight winning season, while prolonging their na- tional record 102-game consecutive scoring streak. Before the season en- ded, however, inexperience and a few costly injuries forced these good things to an end in 1973. Eastern Kentucky University traveled to George P. Miller Stadium for the first time in the history and simply proved stronger than the home team with a 26-13 win. Following that opening contest, the defense which could boast of only three returning starters from the pre- vious season, took hold of itself and allowed only one touchdown in the next two games, as lUP went on to beat Cortland State 10-0, and North- wood Institute 13-6. The fighting Scots of Edinboro ruined Homecoming with a 21-14 victory afterwhich sophomore quar- terback Lynn Hieber took over the starting position from Senior George Yokitis as the upsetminded Indians lost a close game at the hands of nationally ranked Westminster, after missing a two-point conversion late in the game which would have put the Indians in the lead. 38 39 . 13 Eastern Kontuck m 10 Cor! land 13 N , r!t , .., 6 ; 14 21 6 ' , Vest minster 14 .22 ; Clarion |;- Slippery Roc k 20 34 ' ■|; Caiifornia 28 liiii mii ourigstQ ' A r-i 44 • a 4,o | r . The Indians put everything together when they traveled to California and scored 14 points in the final 1:39 to beat the Vulcans 34-28, with Lynn Hieber breaking three school passing records, and tying a fourth, finishing the game with 302 yards passing. Pennsylvania Conference champions Slippery Rock beat Indiana 34-10, before Youngstown took revenge in the final game with a 44-0 drubbing, thus ending the Indians ' 110-game scoring streak, and giving Coach Neal and his squad its first losing season since 1961. The season can definitely not be considered a total loss, however, as only seven seniors will be lost through graduation, which means ■that a strong nucleus for the 1974 team has already been molded. One of these seniors is center Ed Paradis from Pittston who was named to the second team Associated Press Little All-American. Looking forward to next season al- ready, head coach Bill Neal, in his 5th vear as head coach is ready to begin those winning things again. 41 WOMEN ' S FIELD HOCKEY « ' u.-.c i init aw Row 1 (I to r). The hockey team (4-2), which made the change from club hockey to a recognized team in 1972, beat Car- negie Mellon, Chatham, luniata, and Fairmont, losing only to Slippery Rock twice. Last fall, eight lUP girls were chosen to help represent the Pittsburgh As- sociation at the Mideast Sectionals Tournament at Gettysburg College. Those chosen included three from Pottstown - Terri Eppeheimer, )anet Fink, and Linda Fiigh, Also selected were Cheryl Baltrus (Norristown), Sue MacNabb (Oreland), Shawn Scott (New Cumberland), and two girls from West Grove, Rebecca Robinson and Roberta Wilkie. Miss Carol Eckman, who coached the team in its two initial years has left lUP, but a new coach is cur- rently being sought in order to strengthen one of the newest varsity sports at Indiana 43 f.iJlt ..-%J ' jri,. Mlr £i L „, SOCCER Indiana University of Pennsylvania ' s soccer team, a teamwork team, came through with a winning sea- son once again in 1973 with a 7-4-1 mark, and remained in contention for the Western Division of the Pennsylvania Conference champion- ship until losing to Slippery Rock near the end of the season. The hooters put together their best game of the year against Lock Haven, always a powerhouse in soc- cer, as they beat the bald Eagles 1-0. Playing an almost identical game in the season finale against U. of Pitts- burgh, the Indians won another close contest by scoring a goal and then defensing their way to a 1-0 victory. Post-season honors confirmed the strength as Rich Weron (Carnegie) and |ohn Montgomery (Lansdale) earned positions on the Western Di- vision All-Pennsylvania Conference first team, while Ammed Kanu (Sierra Leone), Mickey Keefer (West Grove) and Denny Charlton (Cheswick) were selected to the third team. 44 ■ir Bottom Row (I to r), loseph Fdbrizio, lohn Stenken. )ett Gehman, Denny Charlton, lose Nieto, Oot Cosuwin, Dave Suscewicz, John Montgomery. This year ' s squad did not quite per- form that well, although they did extend their winning streak to 20 consecutive victories over the last three years, before losing to Edin- boro in the sixth dual meet of the season. The team, which fmished 7-3, placed 3rd, in the California Invitational, and first in the Indiana Invitational which was held Homecoming Weekend, In the NAIA District 18 Meet at Edinboro, lUP placed third, while finishing in the 4th position at the Penn-Ohio Meet. Despite the high finishes. Coach Sutton felt that his team could have done better had all of his runners been injury-free throughout the en- tire season. This may have account- ed for his team ' s fifth place finish in the Pennsylvania Conference Meet at the end of the season. 46 During the regular season, the In- dians beat teams such as Frostburg (15-50), California (17-46), Lock Haven (20-43), and St, Vincent (15- 50), while losing to Slippery Rock (31-24) and Edinboro (41-21). In two Clarion contests, lUP won the first (23-36), but dropped a very close meet to the Golden Eagles the sec- ond time around (30-29). Although no post-season awards were awarded any Indiana runners, )im Nagle (Pittsburgh) and Tom McGuire (Irwin) were selected by their teammates as the outstanding team members. In the District 18 Meet, McGuire finished high man for lUP in 6th place. CONFERENCE AND DISTRICT 18 CHAMPIONS Before the season began things like maybe they II win eight games if they are lucky and it ' s gonna be another one of those years, could be heard on the lUP campus, prob- ably on the campuses of the oppo- nents, and possibly all across West- ern Pennsylvania. It was no secret that the Indians were not supposed to have it as a basketball team - they had no height, not enough ex- perience, too little leadership, and too many freshmen. Maybe they would wm eight games ... if they were lucky. Twenty-nme games later, to the surprise of most students on campus, as well as anyone who fol- lowed the basketball squad, as the season officially came to an end at the final buzzer of the quarter finals contest against West Georgia at the NAIA National Tournament in Kan- sas City, the 1973-74 Indiana Univer- sity of Pennsylvania basketball squad went down in the record books as the greatest team ever in the 99 years of Indiana history. Row I, (I to r), |im Henle , Mike Christensen, Mike Reidmiller, Gene Gaige, lohn Guyton, lay Taylor, Randy Allen, Row 2, Tom Beck, Rich Lynch, Marty Mattocks, Mark Bianchi, Gary Kotsch, leff Lawrence, Dick Mogle, Elio Filippl, Carl Davis. 52 53 LIKE KANSAS The season began in grand fash- ion as the Indians got past their first five opponents in various ways. They maintained an easy romp over Alliance (77-57), squeaked past Slip- pery Rock for the first time in six years, in overtime (79-76), and spec- tacularly stopped Clarion in double overtime (91-90) as Randy Allen ' s 20-ft. jump shot from the corner w ith only three seconds on the clock ripped the net The campus went home for Christmas and the team took a one-v eek break riding atop the Western Division of the Pennsylvania Conference with a 5-0 record. In the Annual Christmas Tree Tournament lUP made its poorest showing in the history of the tour- nament and placed last, losing two close games to Denison (69-71) and Mt. Union (79-82). The team opened the new year with its highest point production in one game by beating Pitt-|ohnstown (99-71). They then see-sawed back and forth, not being able to put together, until mid-February, a strong winning streak. Throughout lanuary the Indians suffered a dis- heartening loss to Clarion (68-70), as well as a 70-85 defeat at the hands of Slippery Rock. These losses tight- ened the race for play-off berths in both the Conference and in the Dis- trict. The Indians responded, however, with a five-game winning streak, beating California in overtime (57- 51), and stopping the Fighting Scots of Edinboro (69-67) in a home thrill- er. An easy 67-49 victory over Lock FHaven gave I UP its first Pa. Conf. Western Division title ever, allowing them to meet Bloomsburg for the Conference title. The highlight of that five-game streak came at the expense of St. Vincent as Randy Al- len ' s 40 points and last second 30-ft. jumper gave Indiana another over- 56 61 California 50 77 Alliance 57 79 Slippery Rock 76 1 ;oT) 91 Clarion 90 1 (2 0T) 64 Lock Haven 60 69 Denison 71 79 Mt. The Edinboro victory three days later gave Indiana the number one seeded position. 57 r ' h-J . ' . As the post-season play-offs got underway, Bloomsburg, the winner of the Christmas Tree Tournament, traveled to the fieldhouse only to be defeated as John Guyton, playing with an heavily taped knee, led the attack with 24 points and nine rebounds. Again Carl Davis ' boys pulled out their fifth overtime vic- tory of the season (against no de- feats), 79-69, and took possession of the Pa. Conference trophy. The first round of the District Playoffs saw the Indians disperse Clarion with relative ease (77-67). The most astonishing surprise of the season thusfar, however, came in the final round as lUP simply blew by Edinboro (78-65), proving that they were the best team in the Dis- trict, and earning the right to travel to Kansas City. Excitement was still to come as lUP became matched against the Tith seeded team in the National Tournament, Azusa Pacific from Cal- ifornia, but made their name known by defeating them 79-74. The fol- lowing day the giant-killer earned a spot in the quarter-finals by beat- ing Grand Canyon (66-65), the team with the best record in the tourna- ment. As the name Indiana Univer- sity of Pennsylvania moved from ob- scurity into the limelight, West Georgia, who went on to win the National Title put a stop to lUP ' s unforgetable season to the tune of 69-103. The team that started out with no talent finished with a 12-man team of all talent and a 21-8 record. It was a teamwork team where freshman Elio Filippi (Aliquippa) would come off the bench and make a few shots from the corner if )eff Lawrence (Pittsburgh) was hav- .; l ing an off night. When co-captain Marty Mattocks (Mercer) would get into foul trouble Dick Mogle (Mon- tvale, N.),) would enter the game and hit some long two-pointers. When centers Gene Gaige (Tioga) or Mike Reidmiller (Jeanette) were in foul trouble or needed a rest, fresh- man Rich Lynch (Ashville) or Mark Bianchi (Greensburg) would come in and sweep the boards clean. Even on those rare occasions when Randy Allen (Altoona) was not up to par, freshman Gary Kotsch (Harrisburg) would step onto the floor and warn the opposing team that 25-footers were not out of his range. And when sophomore |ohn Guyton (Stoneboro) needed a short break, lay Taylor (Finleyville) or Bianchi were ready to fill in. Not enough can be said con- cerning the teamwork that put to- gether the 1973-74 squad in the record books, but perhaps no words at all will describe how in his four years co-captain Randy Allen has practically rewritten part of the record book himself. Coming into the season, Allen was Indiana ' s only consistent scor- ing threat, and the player with the most experience. He proved to be the team ' s main source of strength both as a co-captain and as a player. The All-American star from Altoona holds six school records including most points in one season (643), field goals attempted in a game (33 - St. Vincent), in a season (602), and in a career (1278), as well as field goals made in a season (270). He has ranked in the top ten in eight other categories, including ca- reer points with 1386, ranked third. Other post season honors include NAIA All-American. a unanimous choice for the All-Pa. Conference Team, and its leading scorer, All- NAIA District 18, as well as its most outstanding player. He was named Small College Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Press, and also a member of the AP All-Pa. team. A host of the honors were awarded to this senior guard both this year and last. With the final buzzer in Kansas City came the end to a great career at Indiana for Randy Allen, but also, to a great season for the entire lUP squad. Officially, the season came to an end with that final buzzer, but It will continue on much longer as sweet memories of the 1973-74 team of no talent. WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL The lUP Women ' s basketball team, although receiving minimum publicity throughout the season, provided as much excitement as any sports team on campus, despite their final 4-6 record. The Squaws opened their 10-game schedule by beating the Alumni (77- 12), and following with consecutive wins over Duquesne (61-14) and Ju- niata (38-23) before dropping an overtime contest to St. Francis (40- 43). The most thrilling victory of the season came at the expense of Pitt as the women squeaked past the Panthers, 46-40. After losing three straight games, Indiana downed Car- negie Mellon University, 64-53, for their final regular season victory. In post-season play the women took part in the Mt. Alvernia In- vitational, winning games against an AAU Mixer team from Pittsburgh (53-46), and the Mt. Alvernia Alumni (64-61). Nineteen returning women form the nucleus of next year ' s team as co-captains Sue Tuscano (Meirsdale) and Barb Livingston (Richland) are the only players lost from Coach Nesbitt ' s squad through graduation. The core of that nucleus consists of Shawn Scott (Harrisburg), high scorer this past season with 83 points, and Donna Shank (Indiana), high rebounder with 66 rebounds. Kathy Kelly (Allentown) also re- ceived an award for her defensive play throughout the season. Ms. Lois Nesbitt, who took over the coaching job at mid-season from Ms. Carol Eckman, described the 1973-74 team as great and fun- loving, but predicts more en- thusiasm when the women try out this fall and she will be back to direct the excitement. For the past four years you have been undergoing the experience of obtaining a college education, the fruits of which you now hopefully will enjoy. Also, in retrospect, you will recollect many happy memories, associations, and events at lUP which this year ' s edition of the OAK will help you recall more vividlv. With every good wish for your future success and happiness, I am Most cordially yours. 4 1 William W.
