Backfield Coach Rich Hornfeck Offensive Line Coach Ed Receski Defensive Line Coach JP i •I f f: Second year head coach Bill Neal came off a rebuilding year with several questions to be answered. Could an offensive line with only two starters returning provide the needed blocking power for star halfback Larry Monsilovich? Could Monsilovich sustain his record-setting pace? Could quarterback Chuck Pin- chotti polish his skills to lead the Big Indian offense? Finally, could the Indiana defense keep alive its tradition of fierce and determined play? Favorable answers to these queries plus a few more surprises resulted in a hard fought 7-2 season for the Big Indian gridders. A brand new foe, the Green Knights of St. Norbert College, was the first victim of the season. The Knights came to town with a reputation for being a formicable opponent every time they step onto the field. That reputation wasn ' t enough, howe- ver, as the Big Indians took charge and lanced the Knights with a balanced dispay of running, passing, and defense. The big plav of the day was a record 72 yard touchdown pass from Chuck Pinchotti to sophomore tight end Mark Jevicky. Larry Monsilovich also added two touchdowns on runs of one and ten yards. Substitute running back Dan McDonnell also tallied on a one yard dive. St. Norbert could only muster one score, a 17 yard scoring pass. The next week at California, the men of coach Bill Neal again controlled every aspect of the game with Larry Monsilovich spearheading the offensive charge while the Big D held the ' ul- cans scoreless. It was dedication day for Cal State ' s new Adam- son Stadium and Monsilovich helped break it in, picking up 132 yards on 20 carries, including an 84 yard touchdown run. Flanker Jim Thomas al.so added a score to his credit as he pul- led in a si.x yard pass from quarterback Chuck Pinchotti. Two more touchdowns by Mono and a TO pass to tight end Doug Hmel completed the scoring. California meanwhile, got absolu- tely nowhere. At Cortland State of New York, the Indians passed their first real test and displayed a mark of a solid football team — the abi- lity to bounce back from a disappointing first lialf and break a game open. Larry Monsilovich had another 100 yard plus day, but it was the gutty running of chuck Pinchotti that proved to be the factor that quenched the Red Dragons ' fire. The two teams traded scores with Pinchotti scampering for two touch- downs. In the second half the Big Red defense that had already set up the first Indiana touchdown with a blocked punt, got stingy and sent the Dragons scrambling back into their cave. While junior defensive halfback Dave Balmert led the defensive charge. Mono rushed for two TD ' s and Pinchotti added his third of the day. A 3-0 record set the stage for the showdown of the year — Homecoming. Edinboro also came into this year ' s annual Homecoming game with an undefeated record and the Big Indians knew there was more to be gained than a Homecoming victory. The Lambert Bowl, symbolizing eastern small college football supremecy. and the memory of a humiliating defeat the year before at the hands of Edinboro were also weighing heavily on the minds of each Big Indian gridder. Edinboro ' s highly touted running attack showed its worth by driving for a score on opening kick-off. But the Big Indians made their presence felt and displayed their offensive wares as they promptly got the TD back. The big play of the drive was a 39 yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Chuck Pinchotti. The Indians then took the lead after they forced a fumble and again it was Pinchotti who capped the drive, this time with a 4 yard run. The Scots added another TD while freshman Ron Orenak boote d his first of three field goals, a 29 yard effort, to keep the Indians in the lead as the two teams went to the locker room for intermission. The half turned out differently, however, as all the Big Indians could muster were two more Ron Orendak field goals while the Scots scored two more times. The Big Indians fought hard and never stopped hitting but it wasn ' t enough and the invaders from the north went home victorious. The Indians hoped to get back on the winning track the fol- lowing week when they faced Northwood Institute. The North- wood running attack was a good one and its statistics against the Indians looked impressive until the final score was read. The Northmen could only tally twice aginst the Big Indian defense headed up by safety Glen Wenger and linebacker Tom Rogish. Fullback Ralph lacoboni. meanwhile, busted his way for 111 yards on 16 carries stunning the opponents with power and speed. Pinchotti, Monsilovich and Jim Thomas scored for the Tribe. The Golden Eagles of Clarion State College were the next vic- tims of Coach Bill Neal ' s gridders. This traditional battle is al- ways an exciting one and since 1966 this excitement has been the right kind — victoriou.s — for Big Indian fans. This year ' s game, the fifth football victory in a row over Clarion, was no different. The Indiana def(Mise could be described in one word — devastating. The Eagles offense was explosive but in Miller Stadium it fizzled out. The play of the game was a 48 yard punt return by Scatback Ron Feraco and along with 2 TD ' s by Mono and another by Pinchotti the Eagles flew back to Cla- rion feeling the effects of a real pluck job. Another new opponent the Wilkes College Colonels provided the opposition next and the Big Indians, troubled by injuries to Key personnel, had a tough time besting the spirited colonels. The defense, led by linebacker Tom Rogish and Greg Palchak. who played his first game at defensive end, set up the first touchdown. With the ball on the Wilkes 4] yard line Gene Raymond broke through on fourth down and blocked a Wilkes punt, and then Palchak grabbed the pigskin out of the air racing all the way for the score. Safety Dave Balmert also set up a score with an interception that gave the initiative for another six points. The offensive line led by tackle Dave Connelly and Ernie Ma- cioce and the man that they had been blocking for for the past three years, Larry Monsilovich, were the heroes in the final home contest of the season, a thrilling 43-10 victory over the Hillsdale College. The Chargers came to town with several fac- tors in their favor, including the confidence generated by a vic- tory last year over the Indians and a size and weight advantage over Coach Bill Neal ' s squad. But they couldn ' t contend with the Monsilovich led on slaught. The 5 ' 10 tailback rolled up 224 yards and scored a record breaking five touchdowns. Not to be overlooked was the Tribe ' s defense, who held the Chargers to only ten points. It was a fitting victory for those senMK, playing their last game in front of their hometown fans. Bk The next week was a disappointing one thougK as the Big Indians fell for the second year in a row to the Akron Zips. The Zips didn ' t have an easy time of it as the Braves maintained their poise through out and also triggered another Pinchotti to Jevicky long bomb — this time for 78 yards and a touchdown. Next year ' s squad should be a good one. but the loss of such stars as Monsilovich, Pinchotti and Rogist will have to be reck- oned with if this year ' s successful season can be equaled or im- proved upon. A great season will have to come from the follow- ing: The improvement of those v ' ho are coming back: the right people from either the bench or the freshman team to fill the gaps left by graduation: and the perpetuation of the pride and determination that make this slogan true — INDIANA UNI- VERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA.- A WINNING TRADITION 1971 FALL FOOTBALL SCHEDULE RESULTS lUP OPP Sept. 11 26 St. Norbert ' s 7 W HOME 18 34 California W AWAY 25 35 Cortland State 11 w AWAY Oct. 9 23 Edinboro (Homecoming) 29 L HOME 16 21 Northwood Inst. 14 W AWAY 23 28 Clarion 9 W HOME 30 13 Wilkes 7 W AWAY Nov. 6 43 Hillsdale 10 W HOME 13 14 Akron 34 L AWAY No. 22 — LARRY MONSILOVICH played his final games of a brilliant collegiate football career during the 1971 Fall Season. 171 1 ] .7 3i 172 ' MiM-:i-, sa r ■■HMUS,- 173 SOCCER Under the direction of Coach Vince Ceh- nick, the lUP Booters began their 1971 season with a four game winning streak. The sche- dule also produced some low points, includ- ing the matches with St. Francis, Carnegie- Mellon (where the team lost in overtime 4-3), and Slippery Rock. The disappointing upset with this last opponent occurred after a cor- ner kick for lUP tied the score in the last five minutes. With less than three minutes re- maining. Kurt Backstrom was injured, but play was not stopped. The Indians lost the match 2-1, finishing the season with a 7-5 overall record. The season brought the setting of several records. Frank Schatko had the distinction of scoring eleven goals in twelve games; Buff Jack made the record of eleven assists; Larry Long played 1,066 minutes of soccer, — every min- ute of every match. A team record of five goals in ten minutes was also set. At one point in the season the Indians were rated in the top ten list of soccer teams in the Pennsylvania-Delaware-New Jersey area. Bill Hampton for the two and three mile events, Don Slusser for the six mile run, John Butera in long jump competition, John Elliot in javelin, and Ed Bickart for discus. The team has lost several valuable individuals through graduation. According to Coach Sutton, however, there is more depth in all events this year. New additions to the team include some top high school recruits. This year ' s captains are junior distance runners Jake Sorg and Doug Canan, and senior discus and shot put thrower Mike McGuire. An outstanding individual achievement belongs to Don Slusser who attended the Boston Mara- thon, finishing 51th out of 1,000 runners in international competition. He averaged six minutes a mile for over 26 miles. 1972 TRACK SCHEDULE March 11 at Slippery Rock April 8 Clarion Mansfield 11 St. Francis W. Rebuilding didn ' t seem to be needed as lUP opened its season with an 83-49 win at Juniata College. Losses at St. Francis, 78-59, and at Cal- ifornia by 69-65 showed that it was. The loss of four starters from the stellar 1971 team left lUP with much inexperience. Pitt- Johnstown, another team with potential and in a similar situation as Indiana this season fell, 89-70, to lUP in the first home game. A journey to Alliance College provided Randy Allen with a chance to show what he could do as 24 second half points paved the way to a 92-85 victory. Point Park rolled into lUP with what was destined to be its finest ever and defeated lUP for the first time ever 74-58. Slippery Rock showed off new transfers Mark Balbach, Denny Rockwell, and Steve Viviano to hand lUP another decisive loss at home, 93-80. Indiana evened its record at 4-4 as everyone celebrated Christmas with a 67-60 upset of Clarion State. The Clarion contest seemed to do some- thing to the lUP cagers as a 5 game win streak was put together. lUP did not lose for a month as Shippensburgand Mansfield were beaten in lUP ' s Christmas Tree Tournament and Steu- benville and St. Vincent failed to match the Big Indians. lUP started the new semester with an 8-4 mark and seemed to have stashed ru- mors of a lean season. Getting accustomed to a new semester is sometimes difficult and an 89-86 loss at West- minster hurt the cause. A win at Clarion put the lUP mark at 9-5 and showed that lUP can be great one night and rotten the next. It was that type of season. The team looked its best all year as it easily rolled over California by a 79-63 count making people wonder how Indiana ever lost to the Vulcans earlier. Missed shots and some questionable offen- sive foul calls upset the lUP momentum as the Big Red let a big game slip away to Edinboro, 74-70. This was the Scots first win at lUP since the 1939-40 season which is when lUP played in the old fieldhouse known as Waller Gym. Fighting for its fifth consecutive playoff berth the Big Indians continued to scrap. Slip- pery Rock downed the Big Indians in Rocket territory 88-76 despite a good effort by lUP. Hard-fought wins over Alliance and St. Vincent at home upped lUP ' s log to 12-7 and set the stage for four crucial closing games. These four determine whether lUP is a playoff team or an also ran; by the time this is published we ' ll all know. We do know that John Carom showed pro- mise as a scorer in 1971-72, averaging near 20 a game. He ' ll be back next year. The only man who won ' t return scored point number 1000 against St. Vincent. Tom Kerstetter becomes the sixth thousand-pointer in lUP history. Randy Allen averaged about 15 as a soph- omore and gives the future much hope as does a 13-1 Freshman team which was awesome on occasion. Ed Kowalski, Lance Stephens, Dick Mogle, Marty Mattocks, and Joe Novak are only some of the names that hold the key to the future in lUP basketball. If their varsity years are as suc- cessful as their freshman season, lUP fans may see Missouri again soon. 182 lUP 83 59 65 89 92 58 80 67 80 80 81 99 86 67 79 70 76 65 86 74 69 11 64 1971-1972 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE AND RESULTS at Juniata at St. Francis at California Pitt-lohnstown at Alliance Point Park Slippery Rock Clarion Shipponsburg Mansfield Steubenville at St. Vincent at Westminster at Clarion California Edinboro at Slippery Rock Alliance St. Vincent at Edinboro at Point Park Geneva at Grove City Opp. 49 78 69 70 85 74 93 60 66 70 80 83 89 62 63 74 88 59 83 76 62 53 58 -J-WP i. This year ' s swimming team, coached by Dr. Eugene Lepley, includes some outstanding swim- mers. Exceptional leadership and performance are shown by co-captains Jim Devine, IM and breaststroke swimmer, and Neil Postas, IM and butterfly swimmer. The tankers had some close meets, losing three of them in the last event, the 400 yard freestyle. In competition with Slippery Rock the team placed first in seven events, as compared to the op- position ' s four, hut the meet ended in a 52-61 loss due to a greater number of second place finishes on till ' part of Slippery Rock. In addition to the co-captain, lettormen include senior Mike Jones, backstroker, and soph- omores Dan Fritz and Glon Coates. Jones has given the team a 1-2 finish combination. He and Fritz swept the iiuliviclual medley and the backstroke events in the meet with Slippery Rock. Among the freshmen, good freestyle work is shown by Bruce Houck and Steve Langford. Divers include sophomores Mark Hollock and Chuck Schultz. and freshman Roger Crist. This year the team felt the loss of former diving coach John Hahnfeldt, who left lUP before the start of the season. The swimmers are returning to the PSCAC this year. Last year they sent an individual medley team to the NAIA championships in Clarion. Coach Lepley recognizes the team ' s improvement and emphasizes their internal progress. If there is a weakness, he says, it is probably in depth of freestyle swimming. He looks to an ex- panded schedule next year, with an increased number of meets and a longer season. The addition of several new swimmers will further strengthen the team. 1972 Swimming Schedule Dec. 4 Away Morris Harvey Jan. 8 Away Clarion 29-83 22 Away Cleveland St. 37-75 25 Away Akron 50-63 29 Away West Liberty 49-62 Feb. 5 Home Bloomsburg 42-71 9 Home Slippery Rock 52-61 12 Away Bethany Case 35-77 62-49 16 Home Westminster 78-34 18 Away California 47-66 23 Away Youngstown 49-64 26 Homo Penn State 36-76 28 Home Grove City 51-62 Mar. 2-4 Away Penn Ohio lO ll PSCAC 189 MEN ' S INTERCOLLEGIATE TENNIS Dave Cairns Rick Hower Doug Anderson George Petroka Tom Reinhart ' Paul Cash Dave Lape Ed Grill ' Jim Dzadvsky Chuck Cooper Roster (1971-72) Francis Stone David Huber Bill Shipley Gary Causer Dan Shields Steve Verbanets Robert Pooley R. Of the forty eight teams the lUP golfers met in the three tournaments, the only defeats were to Temple, Bucknell and the University of Buffalo. As a highlight of the spring season, the team is looking forward to a visit to Scotland, the original home of the sport. The boys will compete in the St. Andrews International Collegiate Golf tournament there over Easter vacation. lUP ' s golfers were among the twenty U.S. teams selected to attend the event. Although the team did not qualify for the ECAC Championship in the fall, this year ' s ex- panded tournament schedule will provide chances to compete for the PSCAC, NAIA and NCAA Championships. The boys look forward to a successful season of spring matches. Next year the team will feel the loss of seniors Dan Birnley and Bob Hayes. ' With 16 skaters back from last year ' s squad and several new skaters added, the team really looks like it ' s ready to take off, ac- cording to Coach Hanson. The fall schedule consisted of five matches, and although the new team did not score any wins, they saw some close games. The match with Pitt ended in a 7-6 loss with the opposition ' s winning point scored in the last ten seconds. The outlook for the spring competition is optimistic. The team is prepar- ing for five home matches, with away compe- tition still being scheduled. Additions to the club will be made as se- veral football players join the rugby team. In 1970-71 over 5000 participants took advan- tage of the Intramural Program headed by Dr. Louis Sutton and assisted by Royden Grove. In the fall, football, golf, cross-country, archery, hor- seshoes, and basketball are on the agenda. In 1971-72, the Ralph Athletic Guild captured the Golf honors. Kappa Delta Rho took football for the second straight season, and the Dukes won the Intramural basketball crown; these three teams made a strong effort to cap- ture an early lead in the All-Year Point Standings. Sigma Tau Gamma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Whitehouse, and the Delta Sigma Phi also started strong. Theta Chi and Theta Xi looked good also and it is thought that the Phi Kappa Psi ' s were the most improved of the year. Wintersports consist of paddleball, volleyball, bad- minton, handball, free-throw, and bowling. The en- tries in all of these showed good response this year as handball showed a big increase and volleyball drew a record 72 teams. The X Athletic Club, a new indepen- dent team, came on strong during this period of the year. Free-throw is a side light to basketball which continues into January. Badminton is the relaxing sport held during the winter season. The Spring Season brings swimming, wrestling, Sof- tball, table tennis, .pocket billiards, and track for the Intramural participants. These sports may decide who wins the All-Sports trophy for 1971-72. It will be, as it has been in past years, a close race. 205 206 207 I 208 We need to have people who mean something to us, People to whom we can turn, knowing that being with them is coming home.
