Students gain understandings and develop teaching skills in their chosen subject-matter fields while working with com- petent supervisors and typical children and youth in actual school settings. The variety of direct experiences provided include those activities and responsibilities undertaken by the competent in-service teacher. Each stu- dent is helped through the continuous, coop- erative process of learning to gain an in- creasing degree of skill and self-reliance which will enable him to take his place as a teacher, thus fulfilling the unique function of the state teachers college. 22
