Indiana is a college with a single purpose, an institution for the prepara- tion of young men and women for teaching in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In a democracy which depends so much upon an enlight- ened and educated citizenry the role of a teacher becomes one of the most important tasks of our society. Recognizing its importance in our democratic society, the College has tried to become both a place where people learn together and a place of ideas. Learning together effectively requires not only a compe- tent stafF of instructors but a student body personally equipped to be- come themselves able teachers. Both in preparation and experience, the faculty at Indiana meets fully the rigid requirements of a profes- sional institution equipped to prepare those who will guide the lives of our future generations. Not only have staff members acquired the neces- sary formal education, as evidenced by the degrees which they hold, but all have had many years of experience, some of which has been in the public schools of the nation. A potentially able student body is assured through the process of selective admission in addition to the process of selective retention at the close of the second year. In this way only those students are permitted to continue who show evidence of possessing the characteristics necessary to become the teachers of our children. Of even more importance is the attempt of the College to become a place of ideas, a place where concepts are acquired not only from vicarious but from direct experiences as well. To stimulate the acquisition of ideas, and the consequent ideals which are based on such ideas, has become the primary purpose of this institution. The graduates of the 1953 class represent a carefully select student body, whose members have had an opportunity to live together with a competent professional staff for four years in order that they might ac- quire the ideas and ideals of the democratic society which it is their unique function to help perpetuate. Mrs. Alma Gasslander, Ralph W. Reynolds, Miss Blanche T, Wougo- man, Edgar J. Trapp The Art Club cements the department together and is greatly responsible for the great spirit within the department. We opened the year with a big party to welcome the freshmen, and we were represented at the Campus Carnival and the Homecoming parade. Some of our other ac- tivities included the Christmas Party, the annual Beaux Arts Ball, and the clothesline exhibit at Swing Out. Professional interest is being built by interspersing the social events with professional departmental meet- ings. The officers of the club are: Clyde McGeary, President; Fred Boss, Vice-President; Jane Curry, Secretary; Paul Erickson, Treasurer.
