Administrntion Administration JAMES E. AMENT, PK. D., LL. D. Ill the autumn of 1906, the Indiana Normal School received as its head Dr. James E. Anient, and since then the school has advanced by his touch of influence and power liy leaps and bounds until it is now not only the leading nornnil school in the state, but lieyond question the greatest school of its kind in the woild. Witli all due respects to all persons connected with the institution during its most ]iros])erous period of exi.stence to the present time. The influence of this great educator, architect and genius is felt as far as sjireads tlie fame of Indiana. His educational views are of such a nature as to make the graduates of this institution in demand, not only for their superior knowledge of the texts, but for the educational views and broad outlook tliey possess as a result of having been influenced by his adniinisti ' ation. As an architect. Dr. Anient has been an iiis])iration to the school. Every- where we look around tlie school we see his genius displayed, not glaringly, but unalile to be liid beciiuse of its inestimable worth. He s])ares no cxjiense to make the students happy and to give them a school with surroumlings whicli they can .justly be proud of. and only asks in return that they show them.selves to he worthy of his great gifts. Dr. Anient was born at Woodlnirn, 111.. .Sei tember 12, ISOo. He is the son of the Reverend James Hoe Anient, and a great grandson of Thomas Met- calfe, United States Senator and tenth Governor of Kentucky. His early education was received in the i)ublic schools of Illinois and ' al- parai.so University. Teacher in the i)ublic schools of Illinois, 1882; graduate of Illinois State Normal University, 1(S92; degree LL. D. Kentucky University. IDOli; sui)erintendent of the schools of Cai ' roll, la.; superintendent of schools of Rock Island. 111.; president of State Normal at Alva, Okla., and at Warrens- burg, Mo. We do not hope to offer a just tribute to this great man, but the board takes very great pleasure in behalf of the class of 17 to express our hearty thanks for all that he has done for u.s. and offer our best wishes to Dr. Anient and his future work. page t-.i ' rutV ' Uvi Adiiiinistrutloii pnge twenty-six [duiinistrntiiiH JANE E. LEONARD Since the foiuulatit)!! iif the school in IST; ), cw lias liceii no ])er.son con- nected witii the institution wh o has liivcn such a measure of devotion as has Miss Leonai-d. She has shared the joys and son ' ows alil e since its foundation in the most generous way. As [)recci)tress of the school her intluence has been mostly with the fi ' irls. hut she is held with the l)oys with the same degree of esteem as with the jiirls. She has been seen on the sideline of the football from bciiinning to end and in the roughest weather of the season. She has been one of us in time of defeat and heai ' lily entered into the joys of victoi ' y. She was born in Leonard, neai ' ( ' learfield. Pa. She was a student and later a teacher in the ilillersxille Normal School, and from there she was called to the I ' recepti ' esship of ln liana. where she has since remained. Lveryone who knows the school, knows of the woi ' thy life of Aunt Jane, as Aliss Leonard is aft ' ectionatel ' spoken of. Her worth to this school is ines- tinialile as [H ' eceptress, ( ' hi-istian woi-ki i ' and teacher. Her position is ' no ea.sy one. but under hei ' care more than 1, ()()() girls are most comix ' tently governed. As a Chi ' istian woi ' kcr hei ' intluence is an inspiration to not only the girls but also the whole school. As a teacliei- her classes are filled, not by compulsion. l)ut by the choice of the students. We all have the dcei)est feeling of good will foi ' Miss Leonard, an .l are glad to have been influenced by tiiis noble woman. page t ' i ' cnty-scvcn Adniinistratinn pagr t ' ' ruty-right AdnilnislrdtifH! WILLIAM J. JACK, A. M., Ph. D. As ])reccptor at liicliaua. Dr. Jack is master of the situation. J lis attitude toward the boys is most senpfous and of good wiU. It is a faet that the boys are doing better work than they have done heretofore. The dormitory life is clean and wholesome, and is becoming more and more preferred to private rooming, as is shown by tlie fact that the dormitory cannot acconunodate all who would room in it. Possessing as he does a scliolarly knowledge of his subjects, and a strong personality, he is sought as a teacher not only by the boys whom he is over Init by the girls also, for they know the value of his instruction. Dr. Jack is heartily in favor with boys ' athletics. He makes possible some form of athletics for all the boys of the school. Each year lie develops a track team which is a credit to Indiana, giving everyone a chance who wishes to de- velop in any form of track woik. Dr. Jack, four years a student at Indiana, l hilips K.xeter Academy ' 01, A. .M. Yale ' Of), Ph. D. Yale ' 15, Professor of History and Mathematics at Los Any;eles ] Iilitiiry Academy, California, Professor of History at Indiana since 190(i. With a character that is beyond i-e])roach, and man of al)ility and broad general outlook. Dr. Jack is foi ' tunately the prevailing influence in the boys ' life at Indiana. LUMNI BANQl ' ET COMMITTEE Mrs. M.ilvina G. Riddle,  2 May Anthony Davis James Herbert Russell, ' 9S, ' 1)1 Margaret .1. Lowman, , 05 Hail to the class of 1917! This, the 42d class graduating from Indiana, will add 315 members to the Alumni Association. During the administration of Dr. . ment 1,220 graduates have been wel- conu ' d to our members. On Tuesday morning of Commencement Week the annual l)usi- ness meeting and election of oflicers for the Alumni Association is held in Chipel. . t this time the Senior class is elected to membership in the association. .All e.xpense of the Alumni Association is met by the proceeds of the .Annual Alumni Banquet and Dance. This banquet is the principal alumni affair of The school year, taking place on Tues- day evening of Commencement Week, the banquet in Normal Refec- tory being followed by a dance in Recreation Hall. Tickets to ban- quet and dance are . Sl each; after paying all expenses the balance is given to the Trustees to help defray the heavy expense of the Com- mencement Week. The class of 1917 will be made prominent in the . lumni Banquet by a member of the class, selected by the .Vlunmi Banquet Committee, responding to a toast. The Normal catalogue of each year contains a revised alumni reg- ister and call tlirectory so far as is known. Prof. M. C. Gordon has charge of this part of the catalogue, and will greatly appreciate any information regarding addresses and occupation of alumni. The Nor- mal Herald goes free to all alumni whose correct addresses are known. The . lunmi can do much for their Alma Mater to further the in- terests of the school. Let us all try to send a good new student to fill our places in the classroom and dormitory. Each class should try to leave some memorials at Indiana. What will the class of P ' l? add to the art treasures already placed in the dormitories by Dr. .Anient? Commencement week belongs to the Seniors and Alumni. Every alumnus is then made welcome; free lodging and six free meals are given to each returning graduate, while the 10, 20 and 2.S-five-year classes are entertained for a full week as guests of the school. The Indiana Normal .Mumni in Western Pennsylvania hold a banquet each year in one of the prominent hotels in Pittsburgh. Miss Leonard is always the special honor guest. Vou, the members of the alumni, are corflially in ' iTifl to .attend all of the reunions of the asso- ciation. pag( Ihirly-lhrec page thirty-jour vTMHlriAr AN CLASSED l ii c thirty-srvcn Sciiii rs CLASS CALENDAR V. The club was organizctl in 1909 by Prof. Albert Heckel, now Dean of lja- fayette College. The membership is limited to thii ' ty-tive members, and there is always a waiting list. The proceedings are strictly pai ' liainentary and Ihe conduct of the members is entirely commendable. Each year the club gives to its members some form of entertaiiunent. This year the club gave a sledding ])arty. Every member of the ])arty claims to have en.joyed it very much. The i)arly went to Elderton and was chaperoned by .Miss Stevens and Miss Spencer. The Y. W. ( ' . A. of Indiana was ori anized in 1897, under the sui)ervision of Miss Leonard with tifty-seven nieinlici-s. P ach yeai- it has been steadily growing until at the i)resent date its numbers are two hu)idred twenty-five. Of this number some are faculty mendjers who are, in our work, an insi)iration to the association. Miss Leonard has always been the I ' ight hand of all that was good in our association. The Y. W. C A. has a lai ' e field of work to cover stimulatinsj not only its members along spiritual lines, but socially and mentally. Our greatest woi ' k this year has been along the spiritual line. Bible study classes have been oi ' - gaiiized in most all the Sunday Schools of the town, and the association has a hearty co-operation with all the members. The I ' csiuhir meeting of the Y. W. ( ' . A. is held Thursday eveniiiiis in the a.ssociation room. It is conducted by the members and the faculty. The cabinet also meets every Sunday excnin to dis- cuss the business of the association. This year we have had the extreme jileasure of havinji ' with us both Jliss Richardson and Miss Pearson. Miss Pearson started us on the road to success by helping us plan our work for the year. The Whatsoever Circle has been doing great woi ' k in the school. During ' the yeai ' they have been the means of ])roviding the poor with food, and the sick with help and tempting things to eat. As an instrument in developing oui ' members socially several rece])tions have been given. Our annual play was a great feature of our success. The association stands open to greet all new girls that may succeed us, and it is our wish that they will derive a gi ' eat benefit from the association. page one hundred thirly-thrce Orgnitizalioiis ERODELPHIAKI LITERARY SOCIETY COLORS: I ' .luc ;iimI White K.M l ' .l,K.M ; Ci ' o.scciit and Star. . 1()TT(J: -I ' d- Aspi-ia ad Astra. Three weeks before this Coaeh Smith, assisted by Dr. Wood as coach, and ( ' ai)tain Pettier called the men togethei ' foi ' workout. The number to rejiort the first day was less than a team, but within a week had grown to more than a team, and by the opening of the season proper full thirty- five men worked hard everv day on the field. The team put up by Coaches Bill Smith and Dr. Wood, with Pettier as Captain, was undoubtedly the best at Indiana in years, if not the best. The second game with Whocum Club was easily won by a score of 53-0. The thii ' d game with Clearfield High School was also an ea.sy mark and was won by a scoi ' c of 54-0. Nearly every .second line man was given a chance in this game. Thus the season ran without a score against Indiana up until the Mansfield game at lansfield when, l)y a lucky jnill foi ' ..Mansfield, they scored a touch- down on our team, liut the score was 20-i) in the end. This was the first scoi-e against us during the season. Again on Oct. 28, Keyser Academy was defeated liy a score of (il-O. Probably the hardest game of the season was with Bellefonte Academy on neutral gi ' ounds at Greensburg. In this game our brave crew carried home Bellefonte ' s Goat. The score being 9-0.
