Pieture a record-hreaking crowd of 25,111 screaming people jammed into Memorial Stadium on an overcast afternoon in May, enthusiastically following the progress of 33 shiny roadmasters around a quarter-mile Cinder track, This is an athletic endeavor which outshines even the Great Climb that is held in the eve- ning in the football stadium for all people who liought Variety Show tickets for less than 55.00. It all hegzin with an event known as Qualifications, and when the dust settled, the 33 fastest teams hardly had time to eelelurate before beginning the big push to get ready tor the race itself. And lo, the race came. After months of work by the l.U. Stu- dent Foundation and years of waiting to linally make use of the motel reservations you placed hack in the XVorld's Greatest You-Know-NVhat dawned dark and gloomy. The 17th annual race got otli to a colorful start. The lralloons were released, the words i'Gentlemen, mount your r0admasters were uttered, and the oflicial pace car rounded the track. A con- glomeration of nine teams battled tor the number one position throughout the race, hut Phi Kappa Theta, the pole-position starter, emerged from virtually nowhere on what was ollicially the final lap ol' the race. What the Phi Kaps and everyone else tailed to realize was that this was only their 199th lap.
