She has been interested in maintaining the original furnishings of the house which was built in 1860. Foundation Day exercises are held every year by the college. In celebra- tion of the 75th anniversary of our school, a Diamond Jubilee Tea was given for friends, alumni. and students of Indiana State. In the receiving line were President Tirey, Mayor Vern Mc- Millan, Governor Henry F, Schricker, alumni officers and faculty members.. Top: Miss Helen Condit. Middle: Miss Mary McBeth. Blueprints of new build- ings and projects have 14 been drawn up and everyone is looking for- ward to a greater Indiana State. The present interest in college education in this country is greater than at any previous time. More men and women are attending mir cnlleges and universities than ever before in our history. More men and women now hold college degrees and will receive them this June than nt any time in, the past. In view of these facts, it has been argued that a college degree does not mean as much as in an earlier day, If this is true, then the individual who holds such a degree must compensate for this situation by develop- ing and exhibiting such superior qualities of character and personality as will demonstrate anew the value of our college graduates not only tn modern society but also to any crisis which may arise. As indicated by our Service Men's flag, Indiana State has contributed a great number of its graduates to carry on the responsible duties on the battle fronts. At the same time these graduates are helping on the war front, Indiana State is helping to preserve our home front by educating our leaders of tomorrow. The answer to this question depends upon many ,tac- tors: the director of athletics, the coaches, and, above all, the interest of the students, themselves. Many years have passed since the be- ginnings of physical education at Indiana State, and each succeeding year has seen much progress and improvement in the various fields of athletics. Students have sought work in the department, athletics have become a matter of greater interest to both students and faculty and we have put out winning teams and individuals. All this is the result of the wort? of many people who have devoted their time and interest to its growth. Now, even under the trial of wartime conditions, Indiana Stateis athletics have carried on. As in the past few years, the great majority of the normal enrollment were in the armed forces. The Navy V-I2 program has continued its support, however, and en- abled the school to continue in the true athletic spirit. Intercollegiate athletic competition was necessarily Hrationedv but continued to minimum degree. Teams were made up almost entirely of V-I2 trainees, although several civilian athletes contributed to the suc- cesses of the various teams for the year. 112 ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ARTHUR STRUM, Heacl Football Coach DAVID GLASCCK, Head Track Coach GLENN CURTIS, Head Basketball Coach 113 4:1 It, f f, . An accurate pass to Eckerman on the 30 yard line causes another serious touch- down threat. A State player is tackled near his own goal after a hard running attack down the field. There is a mad scramble for the ball as the Fighting Sycamores give a neat exhibition of aggressive, fighting football. FOOTBALL TEAM Phil Brown, formerly of the coaching staff at Rose Polytechnic, took over the reigns at I. S. T. C for the 1945 football season. The varsity squad, com- posed mostly of Navy men, demonstrated a fighting spirit, enjoyment of play, and winning games. The main stays of the team were Richard Mullen. Rich- ard Schwankl, Bob Armstrong for the sailors, and Lew Eckerman and Bill Brown, civilian representa- tives. Much credit must be given to the many team members who worked hard during the season with- out special recognition. Bottom Row: Loeb. J., Brown, W.. Nolen. Deal, J., Pierce, F., Reel-K. Lanky Hank Covert shoots. . . TO WIN!! And whole team proves tough competition for opponents. Height gives Sycamores added advantage on jump balls at tensest moments in each game. Swinford shoots a good one under the basket after a fast break from the far end of the court. BASKETBALL TEAM More victorious than ever was this Fighting Sycamore team of 1945. Coach Curtis led the team to victory number 100 since his return to his Alma Mater in 1938. Former Chief Specialist Al Lewis did his part in correcting individual weaknesses and team weaknesses.
