the fertlle llI'8ll'l of Mrs I A W Gumbaek The program was both orlglnal ln lts conception and lmpresslve ln lts consummatlon to the mlnutest detall Andsueh warned anel dellghtful programs that greet us year after year' No two ever the same yet eaeh one partleularly fittlng to the oeeaslon These pleaslng drllls and other features come not from the bralns of man proud man' Wlth all hls vaunted arranged by Mrs Cumbaek for the entertalnment of Governor Ralston anel hls party and ably as slsted by other officers teachers governesses and the chlldren presented lt wlthouta hlteh The entlre program whlch had many noyel features moved llke well olled maehlnery and we belleve our Governor wlll always treasure thls lfrlday Iune 5th 1914 as one of the most enyovable davs of hls llfe I'I'ltl8W broke cool and dark but the alr was lnvlgoratlng A heayv thunderstorm and downpour of raln had come durlng the nlght but although the sky was downcast and pres saged more raln the splrlts of all were at a hlgh pitch so notwlthstanellng the drearv outlook of the sky the day otherwlse opened ausplclouslv and promlsed one of rare pleasure to the many who hael gathered at the Home to wltness the program and renew old tlme frlendshlps Governor and Mrs Ralston were met by a receptlon C0mmltt98 at Knlghtstown anel the two carrlages bearlng the dlstlngulshed guests who were prevented comlng the pre VIOUS dav arrlved at the Home entrancea few mlnutes after 10 o elock Arranged on the Wlde and long., filght of steps leadlng from the central walk to the gateway were the members of the klnder garten class the llttle glrls belrg elressed IH spotless whlte and the boys IH blue and Whlte and all bearlng small flags whlch were joyously waved when the Govemor and hls party approached the drlveway Standlng at the head of the steps were Superlntendent Dunn Boald of Trustees and other officers teachers heads of depart ments and governesses wlth xlsltors hlllng the sldes and from thls polnt arrangeel along both sldes were glrls eallvlng flags and the two llnes extended up to and around the walk to the south entl ance of the bulld mg At the entrance to the drlveway of Goy and Mrs Ralston, occurred the first QUFPTISQ Indeed, lt mlght well be called A Dav of SUTUIISQS' Io paraphrase Shakespeare lt was One surprlse upon another s heel doth seem to tread so fast they follow .4 dl me d force met the party and at the command of the gun squad s eommande r the occupants of the two earrlages halted and allghted and found themselves captlves of frlends Superlntendent Dunn met them at the foot of the walk and the n began for the governor and hls good wlfe one of the most pleasant days of thelr llves a day presentlng to thelr vlew a serles of some of the most eharmlng slghts they ever have seen and we belleve the memorv of the faces of the brlght and happy chlldren who so heartlly bade them weleome wlll always remaln wlth them Wlth Govenor Ralston and Superlntendent Dunn headlng the processlon lmmedlately followed by Mrs Ralston and Luther Short the partv wlth uncovered heads marched up the walk and under an archway of Old Glorles The Star Spangled Banner the flag whose glorlous beauty has earned for us ln one forelgn country at least the nlck name The Land of the Beautlful Flag At the fountaln surprlse No 2 took place The llne was halted at thls polnt where the members of the graduatlng class had been statloned Edwln Purple then stepped forth and at the end of a short senslble and SPICQ peech presented the Governor a large gllded key The address was as follows Governor Ralston As the graduatlng class of the Home Schools we welcome you most heartlly to our Instltutlon We feel greatly honored ln havlng the Govemor of the State of Indlana present on the occaslon of our graduatlon We are about to leave the Home we have learned to love and as Governor of the State we want to express through you our gratltude to the State of Indlana for the benefits we have recelved here As graduates we have come to feel that thls IS our Home our castle' We have had thlngs pretty much our own way for the past year We hold the key to the sltuatlon On that basls we
