GEN LEE S CHRISTMAS TURKEY General Iee rn the drawrng room was a drg nrtred and quret gentleman very krndlv and gen tle especrrlly wrth women rnd ehrldren O the held says Major Ranson rn Harper s Magurne he was the gener rl the commander rn all essentrrl porrrts But rn other pornts he could be as sympathetrc and consrder rte as Ire was at home In the latter part of December a barrel was delrx ered at our camp mrrked Ge ner rl Lee and Staff We opened rt and found rt w as packed full of turkeys We sent word to General Iee There was snow on the ground and we had lard the turkeys out brggest rn the nrrddle and the others taperrng off to the small est at each end There were about a dozen of them General Lee drsmounted and Jorned the group gathered round the present carryrrrg hrs un and he rode ow er to our camp on a board on the snow the slung and undrawn sword rn hrs hand He was told that the brg turkey rn the mrddle was hrs He stood lookrng down at the turkeys for a moment and then sard touchrng the brg turkey wrth the scabbarcl of hrs sword Thrs then rs my turkey? Idon t know gentlemen what you are gorng to do wrth your turkeys but I wrsh mrne to be sent to the Irospr tal rn Petersburg so that some of the convales cents may have a good drnner He then turned on hrs heel and walkrng to hrs horse mounted and rode away We looked at one another for a moment and then wrthout aword replaced the turkeys rn the barrel and sent them to the hosprtal THE WILY WOLF In the school of Woodcraft and I nowledge of how to keep out of danger the wolves have no four footed equals The fox rs adunce rn comparrson the coyote or prarrre wolf a fool and the rest nowhere The grant moose krng of the Canadran woods rs the most drfflcult of all thedeerspecres to stalk rn the fall months but nevertheless rt rs often stalked successfully and shot by amateurs Not so the wolf Knowrng thrs and that true sport must com brne a maxrmum of exertron and even danger to a mrnrmum of destructron lthough nothrng would be sard about the destructron of too many wolvesj also that there was more honor to be garned rn outwrttrng and shootrng one wolf than a dozen easrly stalked and rnnocent deer the wrrter or ganrzed a wolf hunt for the wrnter of 1908 09 burlt three log cabrns some mrles apart and rn vrted sportsmen to partrcrpate Durrng the three mrdwrnter months they came rnto camp rn twos and threes for a week or ten days hunt To all of them the sport was new healthful and
