During the season we kept having our ups and downs, says Coach Robbi Noland. Sometimes it seemed more downs than ups, she added. Of course our 3 wins were definitely great moments for the team, especially the first win over Sheridan. I had never seen the girls play so much as a team. Their minds were all into the game with nothing but victory on their minds and it showed, she said proudly. Carie Scales said she thought Sheridan was the toughest opponent this year. I felt very excited, happy, and hugged the team. she said. The team placed 5th in the Wisconsin tournament. Arlene Downing the team MVP, was chosen All-Star. I would like to say that all of these girls are a great bunch of girls. I feel this was one of the best groups ever! They had many close games and yet they tried their best, working hard and pushing themselves to become very good athletes. Coach Robbi Noland blows up at Regina Kyle (12), Debbie Kirby (22), Ryla Hartman (14), Carie Scales (25), Arlene Downing, Kim Mann, and Tracey Parker during the sectional against Pike. They Made Us Proud After school cheerleaders run to the dorm, change clothes, head for the gym and warm up for practice. They work on their chants, cheers, dance and some new ideas. Tired from school work they patiently work hard to make the school proud. Because of their everyday hard work, they have won several awards. At camp at Purdue the varsity won first place in the dancing competition for their Pac-man Fever. They received the spirit stick and a key voted on by all the squads for being the best squad at camp. Besides Purdue the varsity competed in the Marion County Fair competition, winning the spirit stick and placing fifth out of nineteen schools in overall performance. Again they participated in the Indiana State Fair against fifty-two schools and learned new ideas. The most exciting event was winning first place at the CSSD Basketball Tournament in Kansas. Everyday the varsity practiced, discussed and made plans. With all their hard work and enthusiasm they made the school proud of them. Varsity Cheerleaders: Shanon Maple, Susan Ellis, Gigi Bartholomew, Susie Stafford, Karen Satterlee, and Jody Trojan. Sponsor Mary Kovatch explains to Lorrie O ' Neal, Bobbie Lucius, Rachele Whitely, and Mike Mallory some new plans. Shanon Maple and Jody Trojan take a break during a hard cheerleader practice where they learned a new pyramid. We Are The Champions! Our opening win over Park Tudor, winning the CSSD championship and estabUshing a 13 game winning streak were the highUghts of the season. Defense, rebounding, teamwork, good spirit and the right attitude for hard work helped break the school ' s record, 17 wins in a single season and 13 wins in a row. The CSSD championship was a very satisfying one for ISD since we had been in the frustrating position of 2nd or 3rd place for three years. The boys dedicated the first part of the season to prepare themselves for the tournament. They prepared themselves well and were obviously the best team at the tournament, says Coach Robert Kovatch. Forwards Mike Stultz and Scott Voltz, and Center Daric Brye made the 1983 CSSD All Star team. We would not have been such a strong team if Kelly McKee, Mike Penn, Mark Pearcy, Jim Hinders, and Larry Wilkins had not worked so hard against our starting five every night in practice. Often they were harder to practice against than some of our opponents, replied Mr. Kovatch. Scott Voltz (34), John Hazelett (40), Mike Stultz (44), and Brian Hartwell (32) stand ready to rebound the ball during the Wisconsin game. Jimmy Hinders is guarded by one of Lutheran ' s players during the ISD-Lutheran game. ISD won 71 to 43. 42 During the ISD-Tri-High game, Scott Voltz concentrates before shooting his foul shot.
