Nat ' l Champions Win Again! This exciting season ended with 7 wins and 2 loses. For the second straight year 29 ISD Orioles won the National Deaf Championship! Announced by Deaf American, this award is based on comparison of records, schedules, and opinions of Deaf School coaches and scouts of the American Athletic Association of the Deaf. We defeated M.S.S.D. which excited everyone who watched the game. Coach Ernie Grubb said, We knew M.S.S.D. was strong but we welcomed the chance to get nose-to- nose with them. Winning that game was a thrill to the coaches, the team, and the fans. Andrew Metz established several records — 1 year rushing — 1598 yards, career rushing — 4077 yards. This also is a national deaf prep record for a career. Metz was chosen for the UPI All State 1st team, AP All State 2nd team and Bloomington-Herald Telephone Class A All State Team. Captains Andrew Metz — National Deaf Player of the Year, Scott Voltz and Mike Stultz were named to the All American team. Steve Brown received honorable mention. The Orioles prevent our opponent, St. Rita Deaf, from reaching the goal line Andrew Metz — 22 Mike Stultz — 9 Scott Voltz — 53 Steve Brown — 62 38

They Made Us Proud After school cheerleaders run to the dorm, change clothes, head for the gym and warm up for practice. They work on their chants, cheers, dance and some new ideas. Tired from school work they patiently work hard to make the school proud. Because of their everyday hard work, they have won several awards. At camp at Purdue the varsity won first place in the dancing competition for their Pac-man Fever. They received the spirit stick and a key voted on by all the squads for being the best squad at camp. Besides Purdue the varsity competed in the Marion County Fair competition, winning the spirit stick and placing fifth out of nineteen schools in overall performance. Again they participated in the Indiana State Fair against fifty-two schools and learned new ideas. The most exciting event was winning first place at the CSSD Basketball Tournament in Kansas. Everyday the varsity practiced, discussed and made plans. With all their hard work and enthusiasm they made the school proud of them. Varsity Cheerleaders: Shanon Maple, Susan Ellis, Gigi Bartholomew, Susie Stafford, Karen Satterlee, and Jody Trojan. Sponsor Mary Kovatch explains to Lorrie O ' Neal, Bobbie Lucius, Rachele Whitely, and Mike Mallory some new plans.
