Students Are Involved Girls ' Club and Boys ' Club are both organizations whereby students learn about themselves, about their future, and perform services for the community. The Girls ' Club was established to help girls develop desirable habits, attitudes, interests, personality and character patterns. The girls work to understand many problems involved with being deaf. The girls who participate are growing in the different areas of leadership, merchandising, and assisting others. They discuss their hope for suitable jobs or positions in the deaf community when they complete their educational program. They sell pizza every two weeks on Sunday in the dorm and also nachos with cheese or sauce. With the money earned, they go camping or to Kings Island in May. The Boys ' Club also helps to establish good leadership. Their project is to help the needy people when they need help. Wildfire Thrills Behind the curtains back stage before a perfornnance Wildfire members hurry dressing, putting on their make-up, and practicing their parts. When is it my turn? Where is my bag? I can ' t find my shoe! cry various ones as they fly around. In a corner some nervously await their turn on stage. When the program is over, Oh what a relief! Everyone quickly packs his bag, jumps into the waiting bus starving to eat. They laugh; they play; they tease and cry hunger. So — they go to the usual place, McDonalds. Wildfire performances include many skills besides signing. Some students took karate to include movements in their performances. The mime troupe studied with a professional mime. They add more skills to Wildfire than just dancing and sign- singing. They all practice hard to show emotions, especially the mimes. Trying to keep their mouths from moving and not using sign languages is their hardest part. Wildfire had a special program at Valapariso for special handicapped students. They taught them a sign-singing song Unity, interpreted by Gigi Bartholomew. After the Valpo program a little boy asked Beetle McClendon to teach him the dance to Beat It . The boy learned well. The students crowded around them watching and cheering as the boy smiled with a tear in his eye. Unity closes every program. It is the theme of Wildfire because its members feel they need love, trust, faith and especially unity. Angela Barnes sign-sings Love is Fair during Wildfire ' s January performance in I.S.D. ' s auditorium. David Goodwin salutes the l lags when sign-singing America , Wildfire ' s ending song. Sponsor Sei-Tu Taylor explains Wildfire ' s next program while President, Shanon Maple, and Vice President, Beetle McClendon listen. Pat Wilson plays the saxophone while Beetle McClendon dances to Baby Jane. 26
