Mr. Blackwell, the driving ed. teacher, explains the hood release, door lock, and gauges to Mike Riggin, Dawn Ashley, Lisa Boone and Patti Cochran. Kerry Stewart discusses the human skeleton with Mike Riggin. Health class can pose some interesting topics. We Learn As We Grow Caskey gymnasium houses the health, physical education and driver ' s education classes. Students are required to take Health and P.E. to graduate. They help us physically and mentally. Most students are very amazed about what wonderful bodies we have. They get to know all parts of the system and watch movies to understand better. To protect these bodies we have studied, students learn how to drive carefully and safely in driver ' s education. Because we have several streets on our large campus, they can know how to drive more safely before driving on public streets. It is fun and learning is important. Kerry Stewart and Richard Dettmer peek at their grades as Mr. Bailey records Richard ' s grade in Health class. These panting girls run to finish the 200 yards during gym class. 15

Planning Is The Key Word Layouts, inverted pyramids, body copy-all foreign words until you became involved in journalism. Although the yearbook has been around a long time, it was offered as a class for the first time this year. The junior English class produced The ISD Newsletter. Students learned many journalism skills. Both classes helped develop planning skills in small steps to reach a large goal, skills every student will need in their future. It was hard at first but easier as students became more accustomed to it. Newspaper students covered the demonstration against CBS in September. CBS does not offer closed captioning of their TV programs at this time. The experience provided insight into human behavior. It also gave the students an idea of a reporter ' s job. The yearbook presents our school to the public. It also provides a history book and memory book for students in the future as it records the year ' s happenings at ISD. Before they leave for the demonstration against CBS, Carie Scales, Jody Trojan, Regina Williams, and Peter Kappos discuss their teacher, Ms. assignment with Backus. the Ashley Mackintosh eagerly orders a 1984 yearbook from yearbook students Debbie Kirby and Jody Trojan between classes. Regina Williams, Dwight Casler and Jody Trojan discuss which topic they will write in Mrs Backus ' journalism class for The ISD Newsletter. 14

Compare Past With Present Although these classes are not required for the student ' s future career, Civics gives students the knowledge of how to live in the world. It teaches them about their government. All Americans need to study and understand their government. says social studies teacher, Tim Harrold. Students should be motivated to learn history and civics. They learn to compare the past with the present. A student cannot understand things that are happening now if they do not know some background. One of the best field trips Mr. Grubb, Mr. Backus, and Mr. Harrold take their students on is to the Indiana State House to see how the government really works. Experience always teaches better than books and classrooms. Richard McGuire and Denise Stiles listen to Ms. Summerlin, history teacher. 16 Civics teacher, Mr. Grubb, explains legal rights of government to Tony Brooks, Richard Kite, Yvette Turner and Kay Lawson, who listen carefully.
