Spanish classes attend the Mexico Espana OLE! presented by the Boston Flamenco Ballet at the Hedback Community Theatre Nov. 10. Lisa Swartzell, Mike Riggin, Desira Brown, Claire Carr and Kim Holsapple enjoy pre-performance conversation. Language Is Communication It is important to know how to communicate clearly with hearing people. English and language arts classes provide an opportunity to learn new and improve old written communication skills. We need these skills for future jobs, training programs and college. Many colleges now require a foreign language for entrance. Therefore, ISD offers Spanish 1 to fulfill this requirement. Because language skills are especially difficult for deaf students, they are not the most popular classes. However, we all recognize their importance. Rachele Whitely and Brian Bippus search for words in the unabridged dictionary to complete homework for library skills, a unit in Mrs. Cass ' s English class. Peggy Steinberger asks Kim Holsapple, What does this T-shirt mean? Kim explains it is the Spanish alphabet. 13

Reading Is Essential Human beings need language to communicate. English builds and perfects that language; literature expands the mind through the many uses of languages. Also being able to read and write is essential to almost any job, says Mrs. Mary Kovatch, English and literature teacher. Besides all of the reasons anyone needs to read, deaf people need to take literature and reading because they can ' t hear. Therefore, they must read to understand what is happening in the world. Rachele Whitely, Noel Rivera, Rocky Murray, Kim Holsapple, Susan Ellis, and Brian Bippus listen to Mrs. Kovatch in literature class. During study hall Regina Williams prepares for Mrs. Kovatch ' s literature class. Teresa Massey and Brian Hartwell watch intently as Mrs. Olsen explains the lesson. 12

Planning Is The Key Word Layouts, inverted pyramids, body copy-all foreign words until you became involved in journalism. Although the yearbook has been around a long time, it was offered as a class for the first time this year. The junior English class produced The ISD Newsletter. Students learned many journalism skills. Both classes helped develop planning skills in small steps to reach a large goal, skills every student will need in their future. It was hard at first but easier as students became more accustomed to it. Newspaper students covered the demonstration against CBS in September. CBS does not offer closed captioning of their TV programs at this time. The experience provided insight into human behavior. It also gave the students an idea of a reporter ' s job. The yearbook presents our school to the public. It also provides a history book and memory book for students in the future as it records the year ' s happenings at ISD. Before they leave for the demonstration against CBS, Carie Scales, Jody Trojan, Regina Williams, and Peter Kappos discuss their teacher, Ms. assignment with Backus. the Ashley Mackintosh eagerly orders a 1984 yearbook from yearbook students Debbie Kirby and Jody Trojan between classes. Regina Williams, Dwight Casler and Jody Trojan discuss which topic they will write in Mrs Backus ' journalism class for The ISD Newsletter. 14
