DOW Head, Aeronautical Eng ' neering Department AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING Aeronautical Engineering has made mo- mentous strides in the 54 years since the first flight of heavier-than-air machines. Since the Wright Brothers first airplane to today ' s supersonic fighters, the aircraft Industry has seen many changes. Today ' s aircraft de- signers and builders work as a team. Indi- vidual engineers concentrate their effort on small phases of the overall project, re- sulting In a complicated but efficient design. More and more scientific knowledge is necessary to keep pace with today ' s ad- vanced aircraft. The Importance of basic knowledge in the fields of mathematics, physics, and mechanics is becoming more apparent. The Aeronautical Engineering De- partment at Indiana Technical College strives to have the student well prepared in the basic sciences before the advanced aer- onautical topics are undertaken. A graduate with a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engine- ering may enter many phases of the aero- nautical field. The ever increasing advances in the field of aeronautics, such as the earth satellite project, will continue to offer a chal- lange to the engineers of the present and future. BENNETT L. Practically all industry in some stage of processing, development, or manufactur- ing, must depend upon men with a knowl- edge of chemistry. Today there are highly specialized and diversified fields such as Gas, Metallurgical, Ceramics, and Petro- leum. Because of its being the basic tech- nology underlying the development and op- eration of virtually all industry, Chemical Engineering will realize even greater growth in the years to come. DR. The importance of electronics Is recognized as a field of engineering in its own right. To the Electronic Engineer is attributed outstand- ing development in such realms as guided missiles, radar, color television, electronic computer, radio communication, and atomic energy. The Electronic Engineering cur- riculum Is planned to specia lize a funda- mental knowledge of electrical engineering to scientific application in the field of electronics. PROFESSOR RALPH S. Consequently, Mechanical Engineers tend to become specialists in chosen branches. Therefore, the student is given a thorough background in the basic sciences. This field is very extensive, for practically every manufactured article re- quires the services of mechanical engineers both in the design of the machine on which it is made and in the production of the article on those machines in the factory. Men of industry have indicated that Engineering Drawing is not only important, but absolutely necessary. Students need a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of science and communication, and should be trained early in the engineering approach for the solution of problems. They must have training in space v isualization; they must develop their powers of analysis and synthe- sis; they must be given experience in cre- ative thinking at the start of their college work; and their abilities to develop and record ideas must be constantly challenged.
