Final papers were signed on July 23, 1953, completing the purchase of Concordia College b Indiana Technical College, for $1,000,000. Signing for Concordia were Dr. Paul L. Dannenfeldt, chairman of the college board, and the Rev. Edgar P. Schmidt, secretary ot the Concordia board. President Archie T. Keene and Secretary Inez M. Pontius signed for Indiana Technical College. Tech plans to gain possession of the 20-acre tract including all buildings July I, 1956 (excluding 4.86 acres on the south- east corner of the campus where the High School and two houses on the east side of East Drive are located). The purchase of Concordia College was not an isolated opportunity which was suddenly presented and seized by the mem- bers of the Board of Directors of Indiana Technical College. Rather it was the climax of years of forward-looking decisions, of obstacles met and overcome, opportunities searched out and utilized. ORGANIZATION OF TECH Few events in the history of any institution or country stand alone. They are foreshadowed and prepared for by the judgment and courage of men whose names might be forgotten when the goal is finally reached. Such men were John A. Kalbflelsch, former school executive, who conceived and founded Indiana Tech, and William J. Hess, financier and manufacturer (father of Paul Hess, now a member of the Board of Directors of I.T.C.) who joined in the venture. They worked hard and helped with the early development of Indiana Technical College. The purpose of the college was to alleviate in a small measure the shortage of capable engineers. They were particularly interested in the capable young men with limited financial resources who were unable to attend a regular four-year college. The new college concentrated on mathematics, science, and engineering subjects and the state charter authorized the conferring of the bachelor of science degree in the various fields of engineering on an accelerated program. The establishment of the college in the downtown area of Fort Wayne provided convenience for part-time work for students who needed it. Most boys did!
