Tech Buys Concordi ttcjl a tq« N E W C A P U S BOUGHT JULY, 1953 • • I I - ! TO BE OCCUPIED JULY, 1956 INDIANA TECHNICAL COLLEGE Final papers were signed on July 23, 1953, completing the purchase of Concordia College b Indiana Technical College, for $1,000,000. Signing for Concordia were Dr. Paul L. Dannenfeldt, chairman of the college board, and the Rev. Edgar P. Schmidt, secretary ot the Concordia board. President Archie T. Keene and Secretary Inez M. Pontius signed for Indiana Technical College. Tech plans to gain possession of the 20-acre tract including all buildings July I, 1956 (excluding 4.86 acres on the south- east corner of the campus where the High School and two houses on the east side of East Drive are located). The purchase of Concordia College was not an isolated opportunity which was suddenly presented and seized by the mem- bers of the Board of Directors of Indiana Technical College. Rather it was the climax of years of forward-looking decisions, of obstacles met and overcome, opportunities searched out and utilized. ORGANIZATION OF TECH Few events in the history of any institution or country stand alone. They are foreshadowed and prepared for by the judgment and courage of men whose names might be forgotten when the goal is finally reached. Such men were John A. Kalbflelsch, former school executive, who conceived and founded Indiana Tech, and William J. Hess, financier and manufacturer (father of Paul Hess, now a member of the Board of Directors of I.T.C.) who joined in the venture. They worked hard and helped with the early development of Indiana Technical College. The purpose of the college was to alleviate in a small measure the shortage of capable engineers. They were particularly interested in the capable young men with limited financial resources who were unable to attend a regular four-year college. The new college concentrated on mathematics, science, and engineering subjects and the state charter authorized the conferring of the bachelor of science degree in the various fields of engineering on an accelerated program. The establishment of the college in the downtown area of Fort Wayne provided convenience for part-time work for students who needed it. Most boys did! SOCIAL LIFE I CLASSES THE STUDENTS AT PLAY 10 DEDICATED TO THE . . . WIVES OF TECH ' S STUDENT ENGINEERS Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:10-12. 31. It The deepest tenderness a woman can show to a man, is to help him to do his duty. — Mulock. There is a woman at the beginning of all great things. — Lamartine. Next to Sod we are indebted to women, first for life itself, and then for making it worth having. — Bovee. There is nothing by which I have through life more profited, than by the just observations, the good opinions, and sincere and gentle encouragement of amiable and sensible women. — Sir. S. Romilly. 16 MR. C. A. OVERHOLT Treausrer and Business Manager MRS. INEZ M. PONTIUS Secretary MR. ROBERT C. RUHL Dean HOWARD P. SMITH Director of Student Industrial Relations Engineers have Pioneered new inventions and changed luxuries into neces- sities. Because of engineers, blast furnaces roar, millions are employed, industry keeps growing, the nation becomes more powerful and less vul- nerable. Because of engineers America moves ahead. DR. ARCHIE T. KEENE, President. ADMINISTRATION An engineer is one who passes as an exacting expert on the strength of being able to turn out, with prolific fortitude, strings of incomprehensible formulae cal- culated with micrometric precision from extremely vague assumptions which are based on debatable figures acquired from inconclusive tests and quite incomplete experiments, carried out with instruments of problematic accuracy by persons of doubtful reliability and rather dubious mentality with particular anticipation of disconcerting and annoying everyone out- side of their own fraternity. However, it was not until September of 1953 that a separate of- fice was established. Dr. A. T. Keene is Director of Research, Mr. Eugene Montoya is the Administrative Engineer in charge of the Research Department, and Mr. Richard D. Dermer is the chief consultant. Mr. John Whitney is the Head Development Engineer and Mr. Robetrt Morris is a Development Engi- neer in Mechanics. In addition to the above per- sonnel, the Department Heads of the College act as Consultants. Twenty members of the faculty devote part-time to research and development projects and a total of twenty-five students have been employed by the department as of July 1954. Aeronautical Engineering and Applied Me- chanics, Olivet College; B.S.Ae.E, Indiana Technical College; Engineer, Curtiss Wright Corporation. The field of Ae r onautical Engineering is grow- ing at an ever increasing rate. Daily new fields are opened and old fields broadened. The training here at Tech enables its graduates to fit into every aspect of the field, from research to testing, from drafting to production. The Tech graduate may major in structures, or aerodynamics, or propulsions. Certainly any Tech man is well qualied to enter the phase of Aeronautical Engineering of his choice. AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING Chemical Engineering, while among the young- est of engineering fields, has rapidly risen to the point where it shares, equai, if not greater impor- tance with the other branches in the economy of the world. For if the chemical engineer should cease to be, all further progress in industries such as petroleum, metal extraction, magnesium , alum- inum, titanium and many other diverse processes would no longer continue, if indeed, they would even maintain their present state of refinement. As a result it becomes apparent that the chem- ical engineer is more than an engineer, for he must evince great proficiency in chemistry and the sci- ences in general if he is to successfully cope with the problems that confront him. The developments in the various branches of engineering has created new problems in the design and construction of buildings, highways, airports, and other structures. Even though the oldest of the fields of engineering, it continues to grow and develop and provide opportunities for men of vision. CIVIL ENGINEERING 44 The increasing utilization of electric power in this country makes immense demands on the pro- fessional Electrical Engineer. To analyze and solve Electrical Engineering problems, the Electrical En- gineer must have broad knowledge in the mechan- ical, electrical and economic aspects of his field. His skill and creative ability transforms theoreti- cal knowledge into practical service to make a more modern tomorrow. He is a scientist, a mathematician, a draftsman, a de- signer, an originator, as well as an efficiency ex- pert. The field of Mechanical Engineering is so broad that no man can be an authority on all its branches. For this reason, practicing Mechanical Engineers tend to become specialists in chosen branches. E The Student Association of Radio Engineers had a very active year in which many new developments In the field of radio and electronics were explored. The highlight of the fall term of ' 53 was the National Electronics Conference which was held in Chicago. The S.A.R.E. attended this event in the form of a field trip. The very latest equipment in the industry was on display, and many ad- vances were noted in all fields. Motorola had the showing of their color television sets and needless to say drew the lar- gest crowd at the conference. During the winter term, transistors took the spotlight as the S.A.R.E. started a series of lectures on the subject. The first of these was presented by Mr. Joseph Cranmer, Instructor in Chemistry at Indiana Tech. Mr. Cranmer approached the transistor from the chemical make-up and structure. Also during the winter term, the S.A.R.E. Review made its appearance. To appear quarterly, the Review carries a sum- mary of term events, fu+ure events and interesting information for members of the S.A.R.E. as well as members of the Radio Department. One of the major events of the spring term was a trip into space as Mr. Madis,on Cawein, local electronics engineer, presented his lecture on Inter-planetary Space Travel on April 15th. Requirements for the transmission of radio mes- sages in space as well as plans for the first Inter-planetary television network were oresented. 59 S. A. E. The student branch of S. A. E. is an organization consisting of engineering students interested in some phase of the automotive industry. Students in all branches of engi- neering are eligible for membership in this student society. FENCING CLUB 71 For the men of Alpha Gamma Upsilon, the first full- year in their new four-story fraternity house proved to be quite an eventful one. Probably the most significant event was the National Convention, sponsored by Beta chapter and held in the Van Orman Hotel, April 30, May I, and 2. Another important date was the Fall Banquet and Alumni Ball held this year at the Orchard Ridge Country Club. This event was very well attend- ed, with National officers present. During the year many projects were undertaken by this group. Among these were house improvements and minor alterations. An annex was com- pleted, making room for five more students. Alpha Gamma Upsilon participated in ushering at the Commencement exercises. Rides were provided for children to the Shrine Circus. A schedule was set up to provide guides for new students coming in and wishing to seethe college. Two interchapter basketball games were played, one with Delto chapter of Flint, Michigan, and the other with Lambda chapter of Tri-State Col- lege. The local chapter also participated in the Indiana Tech bowling and softball leagues. In April, the Alpha Alpha Pi auxiliary sorority was reorganized to con- duct the ladies ' affairs at the National Convention. The fraternity spirit is really catching on and with the move to the new campus will certainly continue to grow. That the A. G. U. men have this spirit is evidenced by the many projects, parties, banquets, and dances they have held during the past year. Any of them will tell you the differ- ence between a fraternity member and a fraternity man. a r y 72 ALPHA GAMMA UPSILON First Row: Dick Sutton, Blaine Eddy, Jerry Sardella, Mauri McGee, Alan Johnson, Carl Crandall, Jim Oxenford. Tom Brown is a simple name for a humble man; a man who works simply to get away from idleness, a man whom the men of Kappa Sigma Kappa thought fit and highly qualified to become an honorary member of the fraternity. On November 8, 1946, the Sigma Chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa was founded at Indiana Technical College. Their circle of Brotherhood is closely knit together by ideas of trust, mutual confidence, and fraternal coopera- tion. The aims of this social fraternity is the contributions of its brothers toward higher achievements in scholarship and the joint participation in all extra-curricular activities. Kappa Sigma Phi is a social fraternity of college men, and, since organ- ization of this type have been assuming increasing importance with each passing year, it has always been the desire of every Kappa Sigma Phi mem- ber to help his fraternal brother whenever he can, and to be of service to his community. The founding of the Kappa Sigma Phi Fraternity was a result of the ef- forts of a group of Fort Wayne college students who wanted to form their own social group to meet members of the various social organizations throughout Fort Wayne. The Fraternity was incorporated on November 27, 1946. The charter members and the offices which they held at that time are as follows: Jack Gren, President; Earl Hardy, Vice-President; Robert Baade, Secretary; Luther Colvin, Treasurer; Eldon Clevenger, Sergeant-at- Arms. Other members were: Richard Phillips, William Thurber, Foster Cross, and Paul Bandelier. Charles E. Dare of the International Business Col- lege is sponsor, and holds an honorary membership in Kappa Sigma Phi. Mr. Raymond Warden of the Indiana University Extension Center (Fort Wayne) gave valuable advice and assistance in the formulation and opera- tion of the Fraternity. In October, 1950, the Beta Chapter of Kappa Sigma Phi was officially recognized by Indiana Technical College. Every member of Kappa Sigma Phi is motivated by an ideal for continued growth, and a readiness to pro- mote good fellowship, sportsmanship and scholarship in his community, wherever it may be. ATHLETICS Thanks to a new policy in Athletics in which Murray Mendenhali is a major in- fluence together with the Alumni Asso- ciation, Tech ' s sports activities are im- proving. COACH MURRAY MENDENHALL The 1953-54 basketball team coached by the very likable old gentleman of the sport, Murray Mendenhall came up with the second best season to be written into the books at Tech. Posting seven victories in twenty outings aided the rise to the runner up slot of past seasons perform- ances, something rewarding for a com- pletely new group of boys. Opening the season with one letter man and one player of last season ' s squad, many new faces filled the suits of the Orange and Black uniforms. Mauri Mc- Gee, letferman guard, and Al Fryler, 6-5 center, were coach Mendenhall ' s hold overs with experience to bank on, but the capable mentor floored the scrappiest 84 Tom Gillie controls rebound under Concordia basket team that carried the school ' s name into many a qood battle. The close scoring games, the boys were defeated by, was evidence enough that they could play to- gether. With the winter term beginning in early December, even more new faces filled the Engineer ' s basketball ranks, included Keith Mendenhall, Don Rudolf and Tom Gillie. Other high school stars teaming with former new comers were Bill Sapp and Max Baumgardner. This guintet then made up the first team and the results started mounting. A loss to Tri-State early in the season left the Bulging Boiler in their possession again for the fourth straight year, but the return of Baumgardner, Sapp, Menden- hall, and Rudolf; top four scorers of this season ' s squad brightens the outlook of its return to our show case. To prove these boys have what it takes, in another early season defeat to Hunting- ton College 96-69, the Techmen complete- ly reversed the score in a sweet revenge return victory. The scoring was evenly balanced among all members of the team in that game. A look back over this new team of coach Murry Mendenhall ' s second tenure of duty with the school, leaves bright prospects for the coming season or two, since only McGee will be lost from the team. It does look like the runner up spot will be cer- tainly surpassed in 1954-55. The first game was a bitter defeat, but it brought the boys together knowing that they must play together. The end of the campaign surely had all hopes answered. Anderson marred the opening with a runaway in the scoring, but although they did manage a second victory January 28, they worked hard for it. The second game was played against a power- ful Taylor team on their home court and the showing was improved, and then Ohio Northern fell victim number one on December 2. In this game the players Don Rudolf, Tom Gille and Keith Mendenhall made their first appearance. It certainly was not their last. Huntington then hit the Engineers with another bitter lacing, but the rematch found fate on our side of the fence. Probably not in a lifetime does one see as complete a reversal as did these boys in their sweet revenge game. It will be long re- membered. Griffin then fell to the boys for their second prey, and again January 19 Tech won over them. This was victory number four. Bluffton and Lawrence Tech then pulled decis- ions away from the Orange and Black, but in the first city series game, the Engineers stopped Con- cordia College 67-61. The Concordia boys did hoewever win an exciting 64-62 verdict over Tech in the second match. 88 BILL SAPP DON RUDOLF CHUCK POWELL AL FRYLER PHIL GUSTIN IN REVIEW Vincennes University won a rather odd game over Tech strictly from the foul line. They hit on 75% of their charity tosses. Bluffton again put loss on the record in a teamed up doubleheader at Concordia Col- lege gym Saturday, January 16. In the homecoming game, the Engineers stopped Tri-State ' s bid for a clean sweep of year ' s outings and showed them what ' s in store for next year. Then in winnnig the runner-up game against Defiance College, Bill Sapp set the season ' s high individual scoring with 3 I points. The last game of the season went to Man- chester College, but the ground work for next year has been laid. Four top scorers and many others will be back. The outcome was in favor of the homesters, 6-4; but the Hoosiers had to really sweat out the victory. Shortly afrer the beginning of the spring term, Coach Murray Mendenhall called the baseball interests to prac- tice, but old man weather was opposed, and only a few trials were held. Also only three veterans returned from last year ' s squad. That proposed an all open drive for the positions and It was, as the new line-up saw, practically all new facesu Those that returned from last year ' s team were Bob Davison, Don Nunamaker, and Warren Keller. Opening April 7 after a series of rain outs, the Tech- men faced Franklin College at Franklin and were downed 12-4. The next game on the schedule was with Defiance College at McMillen Field and went to them 3-0, for the only shutout of the season. Manchester then filling in for a home rain out, tripped the Orange and Black 13-4, The last game cf April went to Anderson 9-1. Beginning May I, Tech faced the old rival Tri-State and the Angolians held the edge in a 5-4 victory. Manchester then returned here and took home a 5-1 decision. The heartbreaking game of the season was lost to Tri- State at McMillen Field in II innings. Warren Keller pitched wonderful ball for eight innings, giving up only 2 hits, but the fielding fell apart in the top of the 9th, and Tri-State lied up the game and went ahead 5-3. The situation looked gloomy, but Tech loaded the bases and pushed across one run, and then with two away, a pinchhitter lined a shot between short and second, but the second baseman knocked it down, and made the out. In a doubleheader, Manchester edged out a 3-2 victory in the opener, but became Tech ' s only victim in the night- cap to a thumping tune of 19-1 I. When the boys opened up, they really came through and scored 9 runs in the top ofthe 10th. The year ' s final game went to Anderson, 13-6 at Mc- Millen Field, but next year will have much to offer with the return of more lettermen. BASEBALL SCHEDULE Apr. 7 — Franklin College . During the past season more than 100 students participated. A twelve- team league, with American Bowling Congress sanction, proved quite competitive with the championship unde- cided unHl the final match. Sigma Phi Detla ' s team was the dark horse of the race since it was the first year that they have entered a team in competition and they came out with flying colors taking the championship in a hard-fought duel. This team was in first place from the start, but was nearly overtaken by the Aero team and the Mixmasters at various times during the season. None of the teams could quite catch them since they did not have the balance nor the strength needed in the crucial match to overtake the champs.. The Mixmasters was the only team in the league that didn ' t represent some organization or group. They were, as the name implies, a group that got together for a chance to bowl and were from various departments of the college. The faculty also had a team entered in the race and it gave the students a better chance to get acquainted with their instructors. They gave the Aero and Mixmaster teams a few gray hairs by coming within one-half game of catch- ing rhem. Trophies were awarded to Ed McMahon, Manny Flagella, Harold Coffman, Bob Fouler, Bill Cunningham, and Dick Filarsky, who were members of the championship team. The Mix-Masters: James Craven, William Tummey, Dick Malchow Paul Gardenwine, Don Boare Marion Stuffs lays it down The scorelceeper puts in the results Individual awards went to Jim Craven who had the high- est average with a snappy 176, Ed McMahon for the high three game score when he hit 606 pins, Dave Craven for the high single game with 231 pins bowled over, Jim Cra- ven for getting the most strikes with 248. Harold Coffman received his award for picking up the most spares when he used the second ball to pick up the rest of the pins 304 times. Hank Thompson ' s came for making the most splits, making 12 cf them. Mr. Jezowski received an achievement award from the American Bowling Congress for having raised his average most during the bowling season. There were i6 bowlers that received perfect attendance awards because they did not miss a single bowling session. They were Mr. Dore, Mr. Marshall, Mr. Price, Harold Coffman, Ed McMahon, Hank Thompson, Manny Flagella, Roger Hauffman, Russ Smith, Bill Myers, Howard Hall, Al John- son, Wayne Hogg, Marion Stulty, Robert Nishide and Frank Robbins. The team s again affiliated with the National Rifle Association which affords many opportunities for widespread recogni- tion and a chance for discounts on targets, ammunition, etc. Although Tech never broke into the win column until the last match, every time they went out against a new opponent an improvement was evident over the preceding outing with the scores progressing upward each time. The first match saw University of Pennsylvania pitted against Tech with the Indians on the short end of the score. University of Wisconsin was the next team to turn back the Tech men. Then came Ohio State, Illinois Institute of Tech- nology, Worcester Poly Institute, Rutgers University, Uni- versity of Cincinnati and several others that turned the Tech Indians back.
