It represents the ideals, work, and play of those within its walls. These pages reveal the realization of our dream for a greater Indiana Tech. The past few years have seen mate- rial development, a new building, new laboratories, and in- creased enrollment. But far more important is the widespread approval of our program by industry and the acceptance of our institution in the educational world. Here is our strength and our hope for the future. We gratefully pay tribute to the people who have red our college and to the graduates who have brought honor to her name. THE KEKIONGAN TDOra TuO - IRPM Editors β Frederick Flor, R. W. Ingram, D. W. Hall, A. Christopher, O. K. Korth. Originator of Name β David H. Moehring Faculty Advisors β Mary E. Weimer, Eugene Montoya, Jr. Copyright 1949, Indiana Technical College, Fort Wayne, Indiana ORGANIZATION AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF INDIANA TECHNICAL COLLEGE Tribute to John A. Kalbfleisch, First President, and William J. Hess, First Vice-President and Treasurer Indiana Technical College was organized in 1930 to provide an acceler- ated engineering program adjusted to the requirements of industry and to the rapid developments in (he engineering sciences. From the start it made a strong appeal to many well-qualified students who lacked the time and money to com- plete the traditional four year engineering course of study. Mr. John Kalbfleisch, able school executive and director, was the first president. Mr. William J. Hess of extensive financial and manufacturing experience was the first vice-president and treasurer. The location of the college was ideal, on Washington Boulevard in the heart of the city of Fort Wayne, the second largest industrial center in Indiana, where manufacturers and wholesalers operated to serve approximately 25,000,000 people within a 300 mile radius in one of the richest industrial and agricultural regions in the United States. Among the many technical and mechanical industries of Fort Wayne there long had been a growing demand for capable technical men and engineers. This demand called for thoroughly practical, yet sound scientific and engineering education and training. Indiana Technical College stands today as a memorial to the wise leadership and guidance of Mr. John A. Kalbfleisch, who organized the college with the assistance of Mr. William J. Hess, who gave unreserv- edly of his wisdom in supporting the program of the institution created to serve Ihe needs of youth and industry. The guiding spirit of these men serves as an inspir- ation to those who have been chosen to carry on their great work to continue to make the school grow in stature and favor through service. The first classes started with approximaiely 100 students. The Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural, and Radio Engineering was offered upon the satisfactory completion of 24 months of study on the college level. This was made possible by the omission of much of the non-technical subject matter. Strong concentration was given in mathematics, the sciences, and the specialized engineering subjects, offering a complete engineering program of courses commonly found in the conventional four-year engineering curriculum. From the beginning the school has operated on a year-round program with four terms of twelve weeks each ln addition to the degree courses in engineering, a short diploma course was f fl ecf ' lH. Mechanical Drafting. Chemical Engineering was added in 1933; and in v 1934 4fer Β±wautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering courses were included 1 curricVjIum. Later, Structural Engineering was made a part of the Civil Engi- ingjg gSjJUment. £ tZfUT O Continued on page 112 657613 At Tech Practice Combines With Theory BOARD OF DIRECTORS Top Row: Donald Borger, Paul E. Maier was the first department head and was head of the mechanical department at the same time. In 1937 the department facilities expanded considerably with the addition of a wind tunnel built under the supervision of Mr. Tom Sullivan, department head at that time. The wind tunnel at present is capable of testing models in an air- stream up to 100 mph. The curriculum offered the aeronautical student has changed considerably since its inception. The latest addition, a course in Jet Propulsion, has been made in order to keep the student abreast of this vastly expanding field of engineering. The aeronautical department at the present time is under the capable leadership of Mr. B. L. Dow and Mr. B. L. Kemp. Although it has never been one of the large departments, the typical chemi- cal engineering student has always been very conscientious and industrious, and usually can be found increasing his knowledge of science and engineering even during his leisure moments. This attitude is reflected also in the graduates many of whom have done outstanding work in industry β in research, development, production, and design, and also in the number who have continued their education at other colleges and universities. RADIO DEPARTMENT The great emphasis during the war years upon research and application of basis electronic fundamentals undoubtedly has caused the great interest in the radio art which, according to the latest figures, places the Department of Radio Engineering as the second largest department in the college. The radio laboratory has also shown marked improvement with the addition of much new equipment and a better use of the available space. The demonstrations performed during Open House excited much enthusiasm, and many visitors returned for more com- plete information about the department. Laboratory experiments, field trips and speakers for meetings help keep the student abreast of the latest developments in his chosen field. 71 o L4 1 jAnrxrr jjAYce Tech ' s Tennista ' s FRANCIS WEBER A resident of Buffalo - β j, by Herbert Stroub . nea ring the I,t .c we are aga ' cam pus β L month has f Yearbook P _ l t? l V ' The diΒ£ After atta in Veterans ' York, Mr. Tech. During 1936-37 steps were taken to organize a Student Council at Indiana Technical College. Its purpose was to act in an advisory capacity for all student activities. The first Council was composed of six members, one representative from each department elected by the student body. Because of the influx of students after World War II the membership was increased to 16. Among the accomplish- ments of the Student Council have been the sponsoring of the Halloween, Valentine and Commencement dances; helping with student registration at the beginning of each term; supervising the Privilege Card system; conducting visiting tours of inter- ested groups through the College; and acting as custodian of school property made available for organizational use. The group, moreover, is in charge of all conces- sions at athletic events. Recently the Council was in charge of raising money for the Kenyon College fund, sponsored the school ring, and instituted the Bulging Boiler Trophy to promote friendly rivalry with Tri-State in basketball. The untiring efforts of the Student Council shall continue to be put forth in the future as in the past for the advancement and growth of Indiana Technical College. 74 Student (2 utttcM ' Pnc4cdeΒ«tt CALVIN WEBBER β Foil term FREDERICK FLOR β Winter term WILLIAM MILLER β Spring term (Not Pictured) CARL MENGANI β Summer term 75 o-me oΒ£ t e BIG Mike Rizzone wins his place by virtue of his gorgeous red shirts and green ties plus his ability as a drafting in- structor and his services to the Student Council. The Electrical Association is a well-established, active, and constantly- growing student organization. It is affiliated with the Fort Wayne Branch of the national AIEE, and as a result, the members enjoy the privilege and the advan- tages of attending all of the meetings and functions of the Branch. Founded in January, 1937, the association thrived until April, 1941, when the manpower demands of World War II forced its temporary abandonment. It lay dormant then until June of 1947, when the ever-increasing growth of the college and the attendant growth of the Electrical and Radio Departments made its reorganization a desirable possibility. In October of 1948, a less complicated and restrictive constitution was adopted and the name was changed to its pres- ent form. During the past year the members have heard many informative and inspir- ational speakers and have seen several entertaining movies. They have taken some interesting and educational field trips and have enjoyed some hilarious ban- quets. The student branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was organized at Indiana Technical College, January 23, 1937. From the original group of fourteen charter members the organization under the direction of the faculty advisor, Dr. Ivan Planck, has expanded to the present membership of over a hundred. The primary objectives of the organization are to promote the interest and to advance the standards of Mechanical Engineering. Secondary objectives include the holding of social functions for the purpose of establishing friendship among the members. Through the media of regularly held business meetings the members are encouraged (o participate in the reading and discussion of technical articles and to exchange their viewpoints on these subjects. Other features of these meetings are the presentation of engineering subjects by speakers chosen from engineers and business men and the showing of films pertaining to mechanical engineering. The field trips to industrial and engineering organizations familiarize the student with processes and developments with which he will later come in contact. Among the social functions is the term banquet honoring the graduating members. This society is also an active member of the Student Aid Fund and has made numerous contributions to the CARE organization to aid the people of Europe. 82 IAS The student branch of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences at the present time consists of approximately fifty men. Upon graduaiion student members may apply for membership in the national chapter of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. The object of IAS is to advance the knowledge of the theory and prac ica of the aeronautical sciences. It provides the students with the opportunity to be- come acquainted with the personnel and activities of IAS and encourages profes- sional consciousness and fellowship. It also enables the student to use the Paul Kollsman Lending Library, where it is possible to obtain books on any field of aeronautics. This library is under the supervision of the national organization of IAS. At the meetings which are held every two weeks films of infinite interest are shown. The films usually pertain to aircraft construction, maintenance and per- formance. Programs also include talks by experienced engineers and inventors, whose lectures tend to enlighten the student further on the practical side of Aero- nautical Engineering. Officers for the winter term were Chairman, C. T. Cox; Secretary, V. A. Cotecchia; Treasurer, G. Kropa. Spring term officers were Chairman, C. H. Bursey; Vice-Chairman, R. Vrabel; Secretary, L. PYRAMID CLUB The Pyramid Club was first organized in 1941 when in the fall of that year a group of Civils advised by Mr. Robert Ruhl and led by Robert Patterson drafted a constitution. The club functioned well during the war years but had no appeal for the majority of incoming students. There were a few, however, who did not lose interest and kept the organization running. In the fall of 1948 under the leader- ship of Robert Stinetorf, David Moehring, and Robert Squires the constitution was revised, and letters were sent to all Civil Engineering students, urging them to take part in the new program. These efforts resulted in an increase in member- ship until almost 50% of the men in the Civil Department belong to the club. Club programs consist of highly authoritative speakers from all branches oi Civil Engineering. One of the most interesting was a series of lectures on con- crete. Speakers have also presented topics on sewerage, highway work, alumi- num fabrication, and post-college problems. The Pyramid Club has succeeded in planning its programs so that they are not entirely on an educational basis. During the term, sport and travel films are often shown. Parties sponsored by the club are a tremendous success. Now with the aid of Mr. Ruhl, Mr. Stevenson, and Dr. Tories all of the members are working for a bigger and better Pyramid Club. 84 S A E The student branch of the SAE is an organization consisting of engineer- ing students interested in some phase of the automotive industry. Students in all branches of engineering are eligible for membership in this student society. At the present time the organization consists of 80 members. The student branch was first organized at Indiana Technical College in November of 1948 through the enthusiastic efforts of Lloyd Morris, a Mechanical Engineering student who graduated in the Winter term of 1949. At present the following students serve as officers: Chairman, E. Walsh; Vice-Chairman, W. McCormick; Secretary, R. Strohl; and Treasurer, R. Osborne. Dr. Ivan Planck serves as faculty advisor. For three months the student branch has been working for a national charter. Th ' s is the only organization on campus at present which has a chance to receive full recognition from the professional organization. Thus, full recogni- tion from the Society will give the students here unlimited opportunities in this field. First Row β Dr. Planck, Shaw, Bartz, Walsh, Sbarra, Klein, Huelschamp, Saul, McLeish. X E T XET, Chemical Engineering Society, was the first of the departmental organ- izations at Tech. Plans for the organization were made in the summer terms of 1936, and in the fall term the constitution was adopted. At the present time the meeting, parties, inspection trips, and other activities planned by the officers are enthusiastic- ally anticipated and enjoyed by the membership, which comprises most of the stu- dents of the department of Chemical Engineering. Present officers are Robert Caha- lane, president; Andrew Watson, secretary; Samuel Himes, treasurer; Louis Palo- meque, sergeant at arms; and Alfred H. Walbaum, faculty advisor. 86 FRATERNITIES AND CLUBS The successful engineer must possess not only the knowledge of the en- gineering sciences, but the wisdom to make science work for the ever-increasing needs of his community. The engineer must have the wisdom to see the need; the skill to fulfill it; and between these two, the ability to persuade others to work with him in accomplishing it. President A. T. Keene 89 IOTA TAU KAPPA Recognizing the need of a means of rewarding outstanding scholastic achievements, Indiana Technical College in September of 1942 inaugurated an hon- orary scholastic fraternity symbolizing Truth, Industry and Knowledge by the Greek letters lota Tau Kappa. The original faculty moderator, Mr. Merl Renz, principal advocate of an hon- orary scholastic fraternity for Indiana Technical College, was succeeded in Septem- ber of 1945 by Mr. Robert Ruhl, who still acts in that capacity. At the present time eight faculty men and sixteen students comprise lota Tau Kappa. The student membership seldom totals more than two percent of the student body. It is the conviction of the members of lota Tau Kappa that with Truth, Industry and Knowledge as the beacon on our path through life, no problem or task will appear too difficult. ALPHA GAMMA UPSILON Alpha Gamma Upsilon fraternity had its beginning here in Fort Wayne in September 1922. At the time Herbert R. Carter of Fort Wayne, along with three other students attending Anthony Wayne Institute, organized the Alpha chapter of Alpha Gamma Upsilon. May 19, 1939, saw Beta chapter of AGU organized here at Indiana Technical College when a group of men from our school was granted a charter by the national board of directors. Although AGU is a social fraternity, it does encourage high academic standards and extra-curricular participation among the members in the college. Many of the Beta chapter men have been outstanding in their scholastic work and in the departmental organizations. During the past two years the na- tional fraternity has held intra-chapter scholastic competition, and three men from the chapter have ranked at the top of the list. Each term the chapter offers a cash award to the outstanding student here at Tech. This man is chosen by the Academic Committee for his grade average and for his participation in extra-curricular activities. 91 KAPPA SIGMA KAPPA The history of college fraternities has brought about many changes in student activities since the first chapters were organized and introduced to Ameri- can college campus life. Fully realizing the value of those changes, ten Techmen met September 26, 1946, and formed the nucleus of an organization which was later to be called Sigma chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa, one of the few international fraternities. Bound together with ideals of mutual confidence, trust, and fraternal co-operation, these men applied for recognition from the national headquarters of Kappa Sigma Kappa, a fraternity which was first established at Virginia Military Institute in 1867. A charter was granted November 8, 1946, and the name of the chapter was des- ignated Sigma. Since the first day of recognition, men of Sigma chapter of Kappa Sigma Kappa have left their mark on the history of Indiana Technical College. They have contributed achievements in scholarship, student government, athletics, music, journalism, and many other extra-curricular activities. All this was many years ago, and I am old, but we of Kappa Sigma Kappa will live as brothers forever. First Row β DeLeon, Vernon, Gibson, Nicholas, Mr. Etter, Stewart, Deville, Robertson. CHINESE CLUB In September of 1947 the Chinese Students of Indiana Technical College formed a club and affiliated with Chinese Students ' Christian Association of North America. This local organization was established for the benefit of the Chinese who are attending Indiana Technical College. The club so far has had many activities. During the period between the summer and fall terms of 1948, there was a trip to a nearby lake. A Thanksgiving dinner was held at the home of one of the members. At another time there were motion pictures on jet propulsion. Many of the former and present members claim China as their place of birth. 93 THE CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club originated in the spring of 1948, but died in its infancy because of lack of interest and equipment. Recently it was reorganized under the supervision of Mr. Ralph Carson and Mr. Richard Dermer, and now shows promise of becoming a successful organization. The club now has a permanent darkroom, equipped with basic apparatus and is adding new equipment as rapidly as possible. With continued support from the many Tech photography fans, the Camera Club should become one of the most popular clubs in school. Two other clubs recently formed are the Kekiongan Radio Amateurs ' under the sponsorship of Mr. Ralph Carson and the Flying Club with Mr. Ben Kemp as advisor. The spring firing was climaxed by the regional meet at Northwestern University where Tech met very keen competi- tion among the Big Ten schools. Excellent year-round shoulder to shoulder com- petition was furnished by the Allen County League of which Tech is a member. Edgar Moore ranked sixth in the region as an individual and ranked thirti- eth in the nation among four hundred. The club officers are Edgar Moore, president; Lyle Brabson, vice-president; Raymond Koster, secretary; John R. Cummins, treasurer; Arthur Christopher, range officer; and Mr. Charles Cook, faculty advisor. The varsity was Edgar Moore, Lyle Brabson, Raymond Koster, Arthur Christopher, and John R. Cummins. Tribute must be paid to Robert L. Tanner, a spring term graduate who en- couraged and ably supported the club in the past. 98 First Row β Doehrmans, Clemenz, Van Burskirk, Gladieu, Coach Bobilya. Although the record shows 8 won against 13 lost, its drive, fight, deter- mination, and comradeship made the games much better watching than the rec- ord book shows. This year initiated the Bulgin ' Boiler trophy to be awarded the winner in basketball between Tri-State and Tech. The boys of Kekionga came through to keep the little steam engine the first year. Individual scoring honors went to Lloyd Doehrman with 409 and Leroy Clem- enz with 204 for the season. Elmo Brundrett had the highest percentage of char- ity shots with 64% while Jim Gladieux fouled the most times with 88. Lloyd Doehrman brought home the honors when he tied the Indiana State individual scoring mark in one game with 49 points. 99 -β β ..Β ! BASEBALL TEAM Although the 1949 season was not successful in the won-lost column (4 wins and 10 losses), it was successful in creating the sportsmanship Tech desires. The four wins included Defiance, Huntington, and Taylor. The batting crown for the season went to George Elafros with a lusty .353. Joe Graziano and Don Klin k came up with .346 and .333 respectively. The team as a whole batted .255, scoring a total of 93 runs for the season, with Ludwig Wiesztort crossing the plate most often with twelve runs scored. Of the 62 walks received Graziano, Wiesztort, and Dick Maher led the parade with 8 each. Of the 116 strike outs suffered by the team Maher and Wiesztort led the swinging with 18 each. The RBI title went to Don Klink with II. Of the 59 errors committed by the team Larry Ouzts muffed the most with 10, while Wiesztort stole 7 of the 25 stolen for fourteen games. 100 First Row β Miles Stone, Brooks. Back Row β Hagan, Galley, Miller. TENNIS TEAM The 1949 tennis season started late in April with fourteen candidates try- ing out for posilions on the team, which was under the supervision of Captain Edwin Hagan and Faculty Advisor Mr. Waldo Albert. A team of six men was chosen to represent Indiana Technical College on the courts. A challenge system was introduced allowing anyone to eliminate another from the team. In this manner keen competitive interest was maintained. The final team consisted of Michael Galley, Elliot Brooks, Edwin Hagan, William A. Miller, William Miles, and O. C. Stone. Only two seeded players were in the line-up from the 1948 tennis season, Hagan and Miller. After only two weeks of practice at Lafayette Park, the team travelled to Valparaiso College, and were defeated by a more experienced team. The next match, a return match with Valparaiso, ended in another crushing defeat. Tri-State, led by two excellent Filipinos gave Tech its third defeat. Taylor College was Tech ' s first victory in a closely contested battle. The final match, a return match with the same Tri-State team, ended in defeat. The season, although not successful in victories, was a success in that fine sportsmanship was shown, and many friendships were made with the other teams. 101 WATER POLO Water Polo, first introduced at Tech in the spring of 1931, was carried on with great enthusiasm until 1943 when it was suspended for the duration of the war. Previous to the war Tech had several championship teams. Through the un- ceasing efforts of William C. Mahaney, the present team captain, water polo was resumed at Tech in the fall of 1947. Tech finished the recent season with a .500 average, during which a total of 88 points were scored to the opponents ' 38. The hottest contested match of the season was with Purdue. Scoring was close throughout and culminated in a 6-6 deadlock with a minute to play, but Purdue rallied with a last second field goal winning 8-6. Front Row β Perry, Clas, Mr. Dow, Kinnaman, Handzel. Out of thirteen games played, they won nine and lost four. They won from Purdue University Center, Taylor University, Valparaiso University, Tri-State, and International College. At the state meet at Purdue University on May 20, Tech finished seventh in a field of eleven. Team members are Joe Ciesla, Bob Brown, Charles Sharp, Ed Powell, George Dean and Loren Knispel. With the enrollment at Tech growing each term, there came a need for a glee club in the school. The group was organized in the winter of 1946- ' 47, but it was not until the fall of 1947 that the services of Mr. Varner Chance, Supervisor of Music in the Public Schools of Fort Wayne, as director and Mr. Rob- ert Shepfer as accompanist were secured. Miss Madeline Crowley has been fac- ulty advisor since the group was organized. A great asset to the club has been the feature soloist, Mrs. Jean Beights. The Glee Club has taken part in all of the outstanding functions of the school as well as providing entertainment for the various groups and organiza- tions throughout the city. For the school the club has sung at Commencement Exercises, the Alumni Banquet, convocations, and at the Open House. Other groups and organizations the club has entertained are the Business Women ' s Club, Republican Women ' s Club, Kiwanis Club, General Electric Squares Club, Fire Under- writers, the Isaac Walton League, and at numerous churches. In May, 1949, the chorus, as the product of many long hours of rehearsal, presented its first concert. The proceeds from the concert went toward the funds for purchasing robes. The Glee Club, although it consists of only twenty-four members, has been very active in school and has had a well-rounded program of public service. 104 First Row β Close, Mehalechko, Sweeney, Humme, Hedeen, Browe., Brazee, Kalin. One of the outstanding organizations of the school is the Tech Band. Or- ganized just before the Christmas vacation of 1948 under the direction of Mr. Garver Wright, the band has added a great deal to the enthusiasm and interest at the Tech basketball games. Not only was it an asset to the home games but also at the Tri-State game at Angola. It made its first public appearance on the concert stage at the college convocation on May 4. The personnel of the band includes the following: Trumpets β Hiro Asa- oka, Jay Kalin, John Brazee, Kenneth Hedeen, Dave McSherrey, Pete Coggshell, George Brower; Clarinets β Charles Humme, Bernard Balou, Clarence Sweeney, John Mehalechko, Joe Hallhan, Bill Close, Bill Taylor, Cal Webber; Flute and Pic- colo β Arthur Christopher, Ardell Shirey; Saxophones β Charles Broker, Jim Ridgeway; Trombones β Russell Appenfeller, Donald Foland, Edward Machuga, Bob Birks; Horns β Oliver Thorpe, Kenneth Colby; Baritone β Otto Korth; Basses β Gordon Bateman, Donald Allen; Drums β Max Graff, Joe Foster, Hugh Simp- son, Jim Walker. 105 7 e OicAettna Great trees from little acorns grow. In other words one never knows into what magnitude an organization may develop, given the proper support and encouragement. Twenty-one young men in Indiana Technical College desiring to further the general interest in their college and their interest in symphonic music are meeting regularly in rehearsal under the able leadership of Mr. Chester Bladek to give to Indiana Technical College an orchestra of which the students and faculty may be proud. The fact that a number of these men have had professional ex- perience speaks well for the future of the organization. The following comprise the orchestra: piano, Bernard Beaulieu; piano ac- cordion, Otto Korth; drums, Hugh Simpson; bass viol, Joe Foster; guitar, Elwood Frantz; violins, Arthur Christopher, Dick Miner, Bart McKay, Ray Nuss; trumpets, Hiro Asoaka, Kenneth Hedeen, J. Kalin; trombones, Russell Appenfeller, Ed Ma- chuca; French horn, Ken Colby; clarinet and alto saxophone, Charles Broker, John Mehalechko, Joe Hallahan; clarinet and tenor saxophone, Don Shewchuck, Duanne Crawford; and Clarinet and soprano saxophone, Steve Tyahla. Soft Saii Under the capable managership of Denver Howard, Tech ' s softball team of 1948 wound up its season with an enviable win-loss record plus three All Stars and a division trophy. DeMars, Kapcprowicz, and Gray were chosen to be members of the 1948 Sappenfield League All Stars. Their outstanding playing was one of the prime factors in Tech ' s winning its division trophy for the second half of play. Other high spots of the season included a snappy triple play against Westminster and a masterful no-hit, no-run game pitched by Stan Pleban. Not being entered in the Sappenfield League in 1949, Tech, with manager John Morse, concentrated upon the inter-collegiate competition furnished in Fort Wayne. Upon the organization of an inter-collegiate league composed of Con- cordia, Purdue Extension, Indiana University Extension, and International Business College, Tech proceeded to win the first half with 4 wins and no losses. In the second half Tech came in second to Concordia with 3 wins and 1 loss. Concordia then beat Tech two games in a best-of-three play off for the league champion- ship. 110 Compliments of English Terrace Sea Foods, Steaks, Special Dishes FORT WAYNE, IND. However, in July of the same year the college was fortunate to obtain the services of Mr. Archie T. Keene as president of the col- lege. He brought to the institution a rich background of many years of teaching and administrative experience in the educational field. Mr. Keene resigned from his position at the University of Detroit where he had served seven years as an instructor, and professor and Head of the Department of Speech, to assume the leadership of Indiana Technical College at a time when the financial problems of the institution called for sacrifice and self-denial, as a test of his faith and courage. The courage of the new president was further tried in 1937 when dis- aster struck in the form of a fire in the college building. However, students, fac- ulty, friends, and Board members rallied behind his leadership, and the college was rebuilt. Classes continued wilhout interruption, and the enrollment increased. Rapid developments in engineering science and the consequent additional require- ments of industry then encouraged the administration to increase the period of study from 24 to 27 months, or three school years, in each of the six fields of engineering β Aeronautical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Radio. Academic standards were raised and a drive for full accreditment was begun. Lab- oratories were improved, and new facilities were added. Periodic reviews of the curriculum brought additional courses to help keep abreast of the modern trends in engineering education. When war was declared in 1941, nearly 500 students were enrolled. The student body consisted of high school graduates from every state in the union and many foreign countries. Hundreds of graduates had been placed throughout the country to assume professional positions among engineer- ing firms of national reputation. Service To World War II During World II the facilities of Indiana Technical College were directed toward war services, including faculty, student and alumni participation in the armed forces, and administrative war work; pilot training β CPT and CAAWTS; pre-pilot training; refresher courses in pre-radar and pre-meteorology; certified ground school β CAA and Civil Air Patrol. However, before the war ended enlistments and the selective service had reduced the enrollment at Indiana Tech- nical College to approximately 75 students. As soon as this war ended, Indiana Technical College was flooded with ex-servicemen who were applicants for admission. The school was accredited and approved for the training of veterans under both Public Law 16 and Public Law 346. First priority was given to former students returning to complete their educa- tion. Ex-servicemen who had not formerly attended Indiana Technical College were given second priority. During the winter term, 1945, an extra six-weeks ses- sion was started to help serve the needs of men waiting to be admitted. Like other colleges and universities throughout the Unifed Staies, shortages of physical facil- ities, teaching staff, housing, and other problems created heavy administrative responsibilities. With the college filled to capacity and the waiting lists growing longer each month, the school facilities were improved and expanded. Among 112 other improvements was a unique, three-shift program to provide the maximum of utilization of training facilities. The morning shift was from 7:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.; the afternoon classes were from 12:30 to 5:25 p.m.; and the evening shift was from 5:30 to 10:25 p.m. Additional land was purchased and a new building erected to the west of the original building. Approximately 11,000 square feet of floor space provided 15 extra classrooms, laboratories, and offices to improve training facilities. One of Indiana ' s most modern laboratories in general physics was housed in this new west wing. One of the high lights of the expansion project was the dedication of the new building at Open House, which was held October 21, 22, and 23, 1948. An estimated 5,000 guests visited the college at that time. Reorganization On Endowment Basis In August of 1948 Indiana Technical College was reorganized to become an endowed institution. The memorial endowment fund of over $100,000 in cash and physical assets, was generously given by order of the Board of Directors in charge just prior to the reorganization. Mr. Carl H. Pierson was president, Mr. Paul E. Hess, secretary-treasurer. Scores of letters and telegrams of congratulation were received from other colleges and universities throughout the land, as well as from alumni and friends of the institution. The charter members of the new Board of Directors were Mr. Arthur Fruech- tenicht, Chairman, of Fort Wayne; Dr. John J. Caton, Vice-Chairman in charge of Public Relations, of Detroit, Michigan; William Henry Caswell, Vice-Chairman in charge of Endowments and Trusts, of Detroit, Michigan; Carl H. Pierson, Chair- man of the former Board of Directors, of Fort Wayne; Paul E. Hess, Secretary- Treasurer of the former Board of Directors, of Fort Wayne; Donald H. Borger, Chair- man of the Finance Committee, of Fort Wayne; and Archie T. Keene, President, Indiana Technical College, Fort Wayne. Mr. Keene was re-elected as president of the college under its new organization. Mr. C. A. Overholt was appointed Treasurer and Business Manager, and Mrs. Inez M. Pontius was appointed Registrar and Secretary to the Board. In the instructional division, Mr. Robert C. Ruhl, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, continued as Chairman of the Academic Committee. The reorganization of Indiana Technical College marked another milestone in the growth and development of educational advantages offered to young men. The endowment fund facilitated curricula! expansion beyond that which was pos- sible when tuitions were the sole source of income. Opportunity was given indus- try to provide laboratories with equipment. The academic policy was liberalized to encourage employment of more top engineers as part-time instructors in special- ized fields. This feature made possible opportunity for more advanced students to work in specialized fields. Closer ties with other colleges and universities were made possible by the opportunity provided to graduates of Indiana Technical Col- lege to continue their training on the graduate level in other higher institutions of learning. During the school year 1948-49 fifteen hundred students were enrolled at Indiana Technical College and 430 men received the degree Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Radio Engineering. There were 98 employees on the pay roll, including 63 full-time instructors, part- time instructors, and student assistants. Graduates who are filling positions of responsibility and trust in all parts of the world can point with pride to their Alma Mater as a source of human and engineering talent for the service of mankind. 113 Compliments of DEHLER Hotel Indiana HUGHES 131 W.
