All together his school life was a whirl of pleasant memories ofthe past and eager an- ticipation 'For the future. He became a part of the school and the school part of him. He saw an undefeated football season, tol- erated an evaluation and enioyed dancing to the music of the new iuke box. All these things and many others went together to make up the most wonderful year of his life-the year of nine- teen hundred and fifty-six. Dr. Perry is a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary education fraternity, secretary of the Pennsylvania State Association of District Superin- tendents and editor of their publication, Super News, and a member ot the Governor's Advisory Council. The schools have become the chief in- strument for keeping this nation the fabled land of opportunity it started out to be. . .. and Indiana Joint High School is no excep- tion. Credit for the sound education pro- vided tor the student body belongs to the real core-the men and women without whom the school could not function as a unit. Indiana is fortunate in its broad and comprehensive program, the superiority of its faculty, and the farsightedness of the Board and Administration. These are the people who make Indiana High the excel- lent school that it is today. Sondra Knupp, Mrs. Florence Barbi, and Mrs. Donna Sprinkle are Dr. Edgar C. Perry's secretaries. Mrs. Barbi also serves as Secretary to the Board of School Directors. Mrs. Margaret Derwart and the stu- dent Library Club act as supervisors, check books, keep the library clean and neat, and act as aides to students hunting information. Their work- room is one of the sections of the li- brary, the others are a study hall cen- ter, a reference room and a confer- ence room. The library also serves as a meeting place for the faculty and has even doubled as a stage for the Sendracs when needed. 9 Zihfary Librarian Mrs, Margaret Derwart supervises two Library Club members. I .ass n A'A Q4 W Vin- S540 fl 2 xx lff' , f,,fl 17 142' 1 isle e We jlind Him With these, the underclassmen, L'Indien entered into new activities. His work was more advanced than theirs, but he could appreciate their first brushes with Latin verbs, square roots, and power tools. L'lndien joined them in their heated discussions in Student Council and in the lunch line, and their enthusiasm fired his own. They were the frozen, cheering football fans, the people who bought his Varsity I Night tickets, and the appreciative audience at the Senior Class Play. They surprised him with their own undefeated football teams, almost lost in the blaze of the Varsity's. L'lndien felt rather ancient when he saw them dancing with their first dates at the Shamrock Shuffle, or to rock 'n roll records at the Student Council record hop. His turn came for clapping, too, on such occa- sions as the Junior Band and Choral Concert. These younger brothers L'lndien's biggest boosters wanted his approval and his advice When he stopped a ruckus on the ball field they listened Know ing they followed his lead he tried to be a good leader Llndien watched them mature watched their pride in their school grow and remembered himself ,JI nv fl e- Yib Q 'iff , 411 2-' I - I If 5, ,gf Jr JV rf- QL 1 . Leading the student body to a better understanding ot school spirit are those clubs which exist for the purpose of school service. Students and administration turn to the Student Council for help in solving problems. Outstanding among its achievements this year were the purchase of the iukebox, the sole control of school dances, and the securing ot letters for the band. The smooth flow ot traffic between classes ancl around the school would grind to a halt without the aid ofthe Safety Patrol. The Ushers Club is on hand for programs in the auditorium. The Library serves the students more effectively because of the hard-working Library Club. The Stage Crew boys work behind the scenes at every assembly program. Fire drills and air-raid practices are more egective because ofthe Fire Squad. These groups and others unite in a concerted eftort to make living in this high school pleasanter for all concerned. Clubs serving both school and community include among others the 'Y Clubs. Tag clays find Tri-Hi-Y girls at work, and this is only one of their activities in promoting their ideals of Christian character. The Junior Red Cross works 'round the calendar representing the school in giving aid to the less fortunate. Allied Youth strives to educate youth to the dangers of alcohol while providing wholesome recreation. Key Club provided an outstanding example of school and community service this year in every activity from raising ancl lowering the fiag to helping with the pre-evaluation housecleaning. When they plunge into work on a Sendracs publication, whether in the play itself or in the vital backstage iobs, they can see the tangible results of their work. Broadcasting Club members study scripts and voice usage and assume responsibility for a number of Friday afternoon broadcasts over WDAD. The junior and senior high musical organizations-choruses, band, and orches- tra-take professional pride in their concert performances and in the accomplish- ments of those members who develop their talents and go on to perform on the County and District level. Art Club members are those whose interest extends beyond the classroom, they work for hours on their proiects. Their ambitions are rewarded when they see their work on display or when one of them wins a poster contest. In their extracurricular activities many students, by giving of themselves, awake their latent interests and abilities. For some, such activities provide the inspiration for choosing a career in one of these fields. For more, the magic cast by the footlights, the broadcasting studio, the concert, or the thrill of having a painting hung is simply one of the more memorable parts of a busy high school life. Swain if E s 1 Learning is not alone a classroom process, and students who desire more knowledge along certain lines may join clubs organized for the purpose of learn- ing. The Geography Club, the Historians Clubs, and and the Science Clubs are among those for which members do outside study and which explore special fields of student interest. The FHA Club trains future homemakers for their roles as modern house- wives and guides girls with interest in home economics as a vocation. Distribu- tive Education students have their own DE Club, which bolsters their classroom and on-the-iob learning and aiding them in a better understanding of their posi- tions in the growing field of sales and merchandising. National Honor Society recognizes students whose school lives have shown that they hold the ideals of outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This organization, by placing honor on these evidences of personal growth, encourages students to set for themselves these goals. Real learning and education begin with the extra etTort which is exerted in such clubs as these, which provide for the growth of the whole individual by en- couraging curiosity and open mindedness. Some would say it is the spirit exem- plified in our weekly devotional assemblies. From the hustle of school business, from their strivings in club and classroom, our students pause to turn their thoughts upward . . . together. In these non-denominational assemblies is provided a meeting ground where students of many faiths acknowledge their need for a strength greater than their own and where they look to the Supreme Source of that strength. From this period of meditation and prayer, they emerge better ready to face their problems and perplexities with firm faith, in accord with spiritual and moral beliefs. The auditorium is quiet as Chapel Choir listens intently with the rest of the student body to the guest speaker's remarks at this clevo- tional assembly 64 Hugh Bell instructs these eager iournalists in the mysteries of type- setting during a Gazette field trip.
