SECV ND I AIWIXAISPII BOMBARDMFN'l' C 1 9 AUGUST l945 Mr. Boyd says that Kamaishi has a beautiful summer resort where many of the rich Iaps have their homes. The hills and valleys are particularly beautiful here. The cove is like some picture you might see in a travel folder. When the flyers first came over this valley, everything was perfectly peaceful. The smoke was rising lazily from the smoke stacks of the gigantic steel mills. The harbor was busy with small boats carrying coal and steel. There were fish traps all around the waters inside the cove and there were probably 30 fishing boats in which men were working the nets. Then this peaceful scene suddenly changed with the first salvo, which landed upwind. The smoke started down the valley and with each successive salvo the valley became all the more obscured. Some salvos started black smoke coming up, while others raised yellow and red smoke.
