Distributive Education trained the students, under supervision, for sales and advertising jobs while In- dustrial Cooperative Training pro- vided the students with skills for jobs not related to sales or office- centered work. A The Air Force Ir. R.O.T.C. was a service minded organization and were seen acting as guides during PTA Open House, directing traffic for the Tidewater Band Festival, and providing color guards for football and basketball games. They also participated in the Veteran's Day Parade and the Portsmouth and Great Bridge Christmas parades. s , 3 fair' Cb Bentley sf X Learning New Skills Home economics covered a vari- ety of courses that appealed to both male and female students. The areas covered were food, clothing, child care, family relations, hous- ing, and interior decorating. The child care program provided parents an opportunity to enroll preschool children into a well- planned training program. While working with pre-school children, many of Indian River's student's Chose this area as their career. The Industrial Arts Department provided many students with mar- ketable skills as Well as with train- ing that would lead to apprentice- ship programs. The Communications classes were always busy printing pro- grams for school sports and other activities 'in the school. - Indian River's unique study hall did more than provide a place for study. Students could learn word games, how to crochet and other useful pastime activities that be- came hobbies for many of the stu- ,,y 1 QJJUS dents.
